Not when Fontenot has a 550 point edge in OPS.

Wait until it gets down to 200 or so.

How do they compare in Joe Morgan-approved OPSMO?

Especially the ones who aren't tall enough to ride Space Mountain without their parents.

Fontenot+DeRosa > Miles+DeRosa

It holds true in just about every way including the all-important "stubble" metric.

I was just impressed with his abiltiy to disarm a gunman holding him hostage.

If the gunman were pitching a baseball, Miles'd be dead now.

I know that 1 game out of 162 is miniscule, but it was nice to win with that lineup.  No Bradley, no Pancakes, no Soto.  It was like rooting for your team during WWII.  That lineup screamed 4F.

At least he's self-aware... (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-18-cubs-cardinals-chicago-apr18,0,3149406.story)

QuoteMiles pinch-hit in the eighth inning with one out and drew a walk off loser Chris Perez.

"The pitcher has to be tight," he said. "I have a little strike zone and worked the walk. All I'm trying to do is get on base."

Also, the Genius is still an asshat: (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-18-cubs-bits-chicago-apr18,0,1613396.story)

QuoteAfter reading  Derrek Lee's comments that pitcher  Adam Wainwright "got the benefit of the doubt" on the called third strike to Bradley, the Cardinals manager told reporters before Friday's game:

"I don't know how the Cubs get away with making the comments they make about umpires."

I wouldn't boo Glendon. Marquis was a Cardinal and I hated him. He signed a stupid contract and i hated it. He started pitching and he wasn't very good. Not good enough to crack the post-season roster in either year. Or did he in '07? Fuck if I care, he didn't see game action. So fuck him. I don't think it's stupid to boo him. I don't think I could've stopped myself. It's an involuntary reflex. Like a hiccup. I'd have to hold my breath to make it stop.

Fixed.

Oh, I will win the Alex Gonzalez hating contest.  I booed that asshat every AB in April '04 in Pittsburgh after he was 2-2 with a couple of doubles and 5 RBI or something.  Today, I remarked that there's not a couch in this world that is shitty enough to tie him to and then torch the couch, when we were discussing the different Alex Gonzalez's that have been in baseball.

Wherever he is, and whatever he's doing, I hope it's miserable enough to make a prison stay in North Korea sound like a vacation.

If the acquisition of this shitty utility guy means we're done with Miles, I'm all for it.

QuoteThe Chicago Cubs have acquired Jeff Baker(notes) from the Colorado Rockies, according to a source close to the club.

It is unclear who the Rockies will receive in return for Baker or the Cubs' plans for him.

Baker, an infielder, went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 27 and was transferred to the 60-day DL on May 24. He began a minor league rehab assignment June 19.

It's funny how he went from a 99 OPS+ when he was with St. Louis to 23 this year.  It's almost as if there was something about playing for Tony LaRussa that enhances your abilities.

It's funny how he went from a 99 OPS+ when he was with St. Louis to 23 this year.  It's almost as if there was something about playing for Tony LaRussa that enhances your abilities.

Holy shit, 23? I didn't know it could go that low. For some perspective, their worst years with the Cubs:

Neifi put up a 53 in 2006
RonCe put up a 55 in 2006
Macias put up a 52 in 2005

Miles is more than twice as bad as those ingrown chodehairs. Sweet sassy molassey.

Wouldn't the scale be logarithmic?  23 isn't twice as worse as 46.  It's like 5 or 6 times worse because of the curve of the scale, no?

The Mendoza Line:

The term is named for former shortstop Mario Mendoza, a flashy defensive player but a poor hitter who struggled at the plate. Although Mendoza's batting average was .215 lifetime,[1] he was known as a sub-.200 hitter whose average frequently fell into the .170 to .180 range during any particular year. That proved to be true in 1979 when Mendoza managed to finish the year with a meager .198 average. Baseball legend George Brett is believed to have coined the term early in that season when asked about his own batting average.[2] Brett is said to have remarked "The first thing I look for in the Sunday papers is who is below the Mendoza line".[3] Bruce Bochy and Tom Paciorek have also been credited as creators of the expression.[4]

Baseball-reference.com has this fucker's OPS+ for the season at 20.

The next guy up on the OPS+ list that has had more than 125 at-bats this season is Alex Gonzalez from the Reds, with a beautiful OPS+ of 43.

My goodness, Aaron Miles FUCKING SUCKS...

I can't let this go because it's just simply so hard to believe one shitty player can make this much of a difference. But at this point it can't be called a coincidence.

Thru yesterday's game:

2009 Cubs in games Aaron Miles played: 24-38 (.387)

2009 Cubs in games Aaron Miles did not play: 43-27 (.614)

According to FanGraphs' Win Values, Miles' overall production has been worth 13.6 fewer runs than a replacement player in 2009, making him worth negative 6.1 million dollars to the Cubs with a month yet to play.

Only 6 players have been worth less to this point this season: Yuniesky Betancourt (-$8.8mm), Gary Matthews Jr. (-$8.6mm), Jose Guillen* (-$8.4mm), Brian Giles (-$7.3mm), Delmon Young (-$6.4mm) and Josh Geer (-$6.4mm).

This brings Miles' overall career value to a grand total of $1.2 million in 6+ MLB seasons.

*That's "ASor with a glove" for the Internet Chuck aficionados out there. ASor without a glove has been worth -$2.7mm.

I'd still say it's pretty coincidental, but it's hilarious.

A lot of it is coincidental, if you break out the record by plate appearances.

PA W L W%
5 4 1 0.800
4 8 7 0.533
3 3 11 0.214
2 1 3 0.250
1 8 17 0.320
0 43 27 0.614

So GoDR's statistic is flawed as it assigns responsibility for a lot of losses where Miles came in late in the game as a pinch hitter/replacement.

But make no mistake about it, Aaron Miles has had one of the worst years among any player in the Majors. Thankfully there are actual statistics for this sort of thing.

Name Team Batting Fielding Replacement Positional RAR WAR Dollars
Vernon Wells Blue Jays -11.7 -18.9 18.8 1.9 -10.0 -1.0 ($4.5)
Jon Garland - - - -12.5 2.1 0.0 -10.4 -1.0 ($4.7)
Alexi Casilla Twins -13.7 -7.8 8.1 1.1 -12.3 -1.2 ($5.5)
Aaron Miles Cubs -17.2 -3.0 5.3 1.3 -13.6 -1.4 ($6.1)
Delmon Young Twins -9.5 -10.7 10.3 -4.3 -14.3 -1.4 ($6.4)
Brian Giles Padres -14.1 -7.9 8.5 -2.8 -16.3 -1.6 ($7.3)
Jose Guillen Royals -6.3 -18.4 10.4 -4.4 -18.7 -1.9 ($8.4)
Gary Matthews Jr. Angels -8.2 -20.8 10.6 -0.8 -19.2 -1.9 ($8.6)
Yuniesky Betancourt - - - -20.9 -17.3 13.6 5.0 -19.6 -2.0 ($8.8)

So, had Hendry picked some odd shlub out of AAA and given him Miles' spot, the Cubs would've won an extra ballgame or two. His WPA of -2.00 backs that figure up. Hilariously/sadly, Miles is only making about $2.2 mil for the year, yet he's being overpaid by about $8 mil.

Beaten like the red-headed step child that I am.

Top of the 9th?  Tie game, runners on 1st and 2nd?  2 out?  And Aaron Miles is Lou's choice to pinch-hit?  Was Baker suspended too?  Does Lou have money riding on this game with the Genius?  Question marks?

Miles sucked because of injuries. And his divorce.
""The fans can be won back pretty quickly," he said. "I've had a tough year. I definitely feel (management) gave me a good chance, but the injuries have gotten in the way. I've had a tough year personally off the field too (with a divorce).""

""The key thing is I'm a player that needs to be 100 percent and needs to be able to keep up my strength," he said. "I have to get everything out of my body that I can.""

Here is what Jim Hendry said when asked if a middle infielder were a priority this winter: (http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/2899)

"Not necessarily. I'm very happy with Ryan. Theriot's a winning-type player. He didn't play quite as well late when we were out of it as he did the previous year, but he gives you 110 (percent) every day. You win a lot of baseball games with him. I thought Baker did a really good job after we got him. He gives you a lot of protection. He plays well at second. I think Mike Fontenot was a guy, he'd be the first to tell you, that he had a disappointing year. We certainly need him to bounce back. We've got (Andres) Blanco, who's a great defender. It's no secret that (Aaron) Miles had just a tremendous hiccup and a poor year after two really good years at St. Louis."

I think it's wonderful that Mike Fontenot's best skill is admitting that he sucks.

What was Fontenot's excuse, did Jim Edmonds take his dog with him?

I'm going to keep telling myself that Hendry is only saying all of this in order to drive up Miles' trade value so he can unload him.

And if that doesn't work I'll just take a hammer to my nuts, that way I can get myself ready for the feeling I get watching another year of Hobbits in the middle infield.

He didn't say it was his best skill.  It's just a skill.  He has others.  It's really hard to tell which one is his best.
