Title: Parks and Recreation
Post by: Eli on April 17, 2009, 02:14:57 PM
Anyone been watching?

I think it's OK so far, though the comparisons to The Office are inevitable.  Aziz Ansari has been great so far.  Amy Poehler is pretty funny, though she's acting just like Michael Scott.

The Guitar Hero scene with Ann's boyfriend last night (and his band name, "Just the Tip") was great.

I watched both eps and I'm done with it, Thursday's show was brutal.  Why do we need to see an unfunny Michael Scott impersonation.

Saw episode one.  The guy who reminds me of a terrist is great, but everything else is a blue light special of The Office.

I laughed a little at the first two. I'll keep watching.

The episode with the public meeting reminded me of a school board meeting.

Picked up for a second season.

I think the show has come into its own a bit the last few episodes.  I felt less like I was watching The Office and more like its own show.  The boyfriend with the broken legs is hilarious.

Absolutely.

So, I've been exchanging emails with Ken Tremendous since, what, 2005? And he knows I live in Lafayette:

http://www.jconline.com/article/20090321/NEWS/903210325/1001

And my last name is Dwyer, like the cripple boyfriend, though I was never in a band called "Just the Tip."

Not that any of this is weird.

Still, the character doesn't have a severe amount of man love for Nick Lowe - or at least it hasn't been mentioned yet.

Multiply the man love that I have for Rashida Jones by 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000012, and you'd get the man love I have for Nick Lowe.

Ron: OK, here's the situation.
Leslie: Your parents went away on a week's vacation and left the keys to the brand new Porsche?
I'll just take it for a little spin and maybe show it off to a couple of friends.
That's when I saw this beautiful girlie girl walking.
I picked up my car phone to perpetrate like I was talking.
This girl's hand was steadily moving up my thigh.
She had opened up three buttons on her shirt so far.
I guess that's why I didn't notice that police car.
Well parents are the same no matter time nor place, so to you other kids all across the land, no need to worry, parents just don't understand.
Ron: Someone is on fire in Ramsett Park.

I thought the gay penguins thing was just so-so.  Sure, it sounds funny in theory, but, if you've ever had to deal with a gay pet, then you know it's no laughing matter.

Andy eating the candy necklace was pretty funny.  I also liked the cop doing the interview like it was a police report.  Or, at least that's what I think they were going for, there.

I saw the last half of the show, from the part where the moustachioed gentleman had the unfortunate moan during his shoeshine.  I don't know who the shoeshine guy is, but both those dudes are money.  So is the towelhead and the fat nagger lady.

Yes.  It was great that during Jerry's only talking head ever, Tom ruins it by yelling from the other room.  "NO ONE CARES!"

I also would buy a print of the defaced Pawnee mural.  So many funny (and terribly inappropriate) things in it.

Ron Swanson is all kinds of awesome.

Yes.  16 times, YES.

I love how Jerry gets treated.  The "murinal" bit was hysterical.

I saw the last half of the show, from the part where the moustachioed gentleman had the unfortunate moan during his shoeshine.  I don't know who the shoeshine guy is, but both those dudes are money.  So is the towelhead and the fat nagger lady.
Towelhead?  Really?  Is this some inside joke that I missed out on?

Yes, towelhead.  Yes, really.
Good for you, man.  Good for you.

Is this where the SBox and Desippy don't cross pollinate or whatever?  It was a joke.  An unfunny IANjoke, but a joke nonetheless.

RV already linked it, but it deserves to be repeated...

Nothing terribly important.  There's a little bit of plot background stuff there, but the show isn't all that plot-driven from episode to episode.  I think you'd be fine picking it up with this season.

Leslie: How would that help?

April: I don't know. I just want to see if I could do it.

Leslie: April, I appreciate that, but I don't think it's something worth losing your virginity over.

I don't know why it's so funny, but Detlaf Shrempf?  Awesome.  I started singing with Tom when Soulja Boy came on.  Everything else is so good that I don't even care if they put the Anne/Mark story in the show.

Also, Mouse Rat's song, don't know if you caught it, but Andy sings:  "You got sex hair, baby...and I gave it to you." or something along those lines.  Hilarious.

Goddamn it, I love this show. I still think it's my favorite out of any current comedy. The characters are great. The jokes are great.

I really liked the meta-ending where the department is being shutdown indefinitely just like the show is. And by really liked it I mean I cried openly like a big dumb homo.

"Zerts" are what I call desserts.

"Tre-tres" are entrees.

I call sandwiches "sammies," "samdoozles" or "Adam Sandlers."

Air conditioners are "cool blasterz" with a 'z'... I don't know where that came from.

I call cakes "big ol' cookies."

I call noodles "long-ass rice."

Fried chicken is "fry fry chicky chick."

Chicken parm is "chicky chicky parm parm."

Chicken cacciatore is "chicky catch."

I call eggs "pre-birds" or "future birds."

Root beer is "super water."

Tortillas are "bean blankies."

And I call forks "food rakes."

Speaking of Ron's facial hair (by cracky), I have a question about the magic of television/filmmaking. So last night Ron Swanson shaved his mustache (for real it looked like, didn't seem like a baldmustache cap to me). I assume in future episodes it will be back in its full bushiness. So did they take a break between episodes specifically so his mustache could grow back? Or maybe his mustache grows back as fast as Huey's fistulas? Or maybe it'll grow back gradually over the next few episodes (thus reminding us of Tammy 1's sorcery) and I'm overthinking things here.

Do you remember when Ron somehow lost some of his hair on the back of his head?  It was in either season 1 or 2.  Anyway, they let it grow back slowly.  I remember the wife and I laughing pretty hard at it as it subsequently grew back...I think it took maybe two or three episodes (my memory is foggy).

You are correct...he and Leslie make a bet about who can shoot the most birds on a hunting trip and Tom accidentally shoots Ron in the head.  Leslie takes the fall for it because Tom doesn't have his license.  Etc.

Or his impression of John Rambo in Rambo (2008).

"I know you and your character have a lot things in common, in what ways are you drastically different from Ron? (if any)"

Quote from: NickOffermanI wouldn't call it drastic, but my penis is 5/8" larger than Ron's, in both length AND breadth, but it is held that he wields his with greater aplomb.

"When did you first meet Amy Poehler, and how awesome is she in real life?"

Quote from: NickOffermanI met Amy in the early 90's and she is like a superhero mixed with both Coach and Tammie Taylor from FNL, as well as Tim Riggins and a little Landry.

"What about woodworking appeals most to you? Do you woodwork with friends?"

Quote from: NickOffermanThe moments of truth in woodworking:

1) When you flood your finished wood with oil, and the grain, color and figure jump out like a visual lung-full of opium smoke (so I've read).

2) When the piece you have wrought comes into use. The canoe, the table, the canoe paddle, the pipe, the cribbage board.... when you rest your steak and your whiskey upon the table you have made, you feel pretty goddamn tall for keeping those treats off the ground..

"Nick, I watched in awe your web video in which you built a canoe and must say that it's quite impressive. My question is simple, whats your favorite type of wood to work with, and why?"

Quote from: NickOffermanIt's difficult to name a favorite wood. They are all so noble, each with its own special characteristics.

Oak is mighty and dense, for the hull of your square-rigged sailing ship, but also, when quarter-sawn, its medullary rays can make your library table sing with erudition. Maple and Birch are creamy and many colored, like a delicious bowl of only Lucky Charms marshmallows. Cedar and Redwood are lightweight but extremely high in tensile strength, rendering them perfect for boatbuilding in the smaller classes of watercraft. Bamboo (a grass) makes nature's bong. Walnut (esp. California Claro) is my gold standard for depth of figure, strength, beauty, and workability. Ash and Hickory, straight-grained and true, make excellent bludgeons, dandy for the cudgeling of vegetarians.

"What's your favorite thing about each of the cast members of Parks and Rec? Do you worry that you're going to be defined by this role for some time?"

Quote from: NickOffermanAmy - Her ability to combine mischief with leadership and generosity of spirit.

Adam - His sweet, gumdrop caboose.

Pratt - Best personality ever, like a golden lab meets Don Knotts. Also a fine backside.

Rashida - Incredibly well-adjusted and lovely for having been bitten by Michael Jackson's monkey as a child. Not a euphemism.

Aziz - He can say anything in the most hilarious way - also keepin' them buns tight.

Aubrey - She is beautiful and wonderful - not evil, don't be ridiculous.

Rob - A champion in every way, super funny - wouldn't mind a tad more junk in his trunk.

Retta - Could rule the world if she so chose. DISCERNING. Beautiful.

As far as typecasting, I honestly don't really give a shit. I feel pretty damn lucky to have landed in the role of Ron, and if I am defined that way, well, I can think of worse problems. If no one will hire me after Ron then I'll have to suffer through making things in my shop, performing live theater, and paddling my canoe with my wife. Yes, that was a euphemism.

"what is the hardest part of acting as Ron Swanson"

Quote from: NickOffermanKeeping a straight face in the onslaught of hilarity from all of our cast, except Jerry.

"How much can your mustache bench press?"

Quote from: NickOfferman114 lbs. of wife.

What's a typical evening at home like with Megan?

[–]NickOfferman 1720 points 1 day ago

Oh, gosh. Well, we get dressed up as Marx Brothers (she's always Groucho or Harpo, and I'm Chico...whatever, she made the outfits.) and we get sauced on Gin and goofballs and run around the yard, sometimes with a lot of horn-honking, and then I set up the target rings at which Megan fires ping-pong balls and sometimes racquet balls from her vagina, often racking up an impressive tally of points (she got a 420 last night!), while I assemble my black powder muzzle-loader collection and fire lead balls at our neighbor, Charlie Sheen's secret wife's mom's jungle cats (I miss on purpose, I'm not a dick.) Normal Hollywood shit.

Just go over there and read the whole thing

Just wanted to check in to say I started watching this in Netflix a few weeks ago and have burned through close to 50 episodes in this time, and I'm trying to determine which character is funniest one in the history of TV--Ron Swanson or Tom Halverford.  I'll go with Ron because he engenders laugter out of me simply by being on the screen.

Looking forward to this (http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/parks-and-recreation-mike-schur-on-the-eventful-season-finale#4R5SpVeMRfj6AQWO.99) gimmick:

QuoteAlso, how much, if at all, are you planning to deal with the 2017 of it? Will everyone be wearing Google Glass and shiny jumpsuits?

Mike Schur: Rule number one for the writers when we committed to the jump was: no hoverboards. No one is allowed to pitch that everyone is on hoverboards. It's going to be very very gently sci-fi.

Are you going to have to be vaguer about references to politics and pop culture next season, as a result of the jump? And, if so, will it be harder to write for Tom as a result?

Mike Schur: Yes, we will have to be vaguer, obviously, though it also seems fun to do some David Foster Wallace-style projecting into the near future. That's what I mean by "gently sci-fi" -- there will be the opportunity, should we be so inclined, to make jokes and references to what we imagine the cultural and political landscape to be in 2017.

I really liked the re-boot (for lack of a better word) of the show. I've enjoyed this season more than a lot of people, but they probably needed something to jolt them out of the same old plot lines. It was also a great way to sidestep all the pregnancy/baby tropes that people were worried about seeing from Leslie and Ben.

You have to feel for poor Jon Hamm, though, being introduced and fired in the span of 10 seconds.
