Title: Modern Family
Post by: Dr. Nguyen Van Falk on September 23, 2009, 11:19:27 PM
Pass.

Julie Bowen's good, as is Ed O'Neill. And Sofia Vergara is clearly hot.

Other than that, it's a big pile of meh.

It's like an Arrested Development knockoff meets an Office* knockoff... except with heart, and "relatable" characters.

So it's like that Sons and Daughters show all over again ("Arrested Development for nice people" (http://www.tabletmag.com/arts-and-culture/1283/underdeveloped/)), but with interview segments and without necessarily being quite as blatant an AD ripoff in so many ways**.

*Apparently Ty Burrell got the memo on the Office similarities, as he's playing his character (Phil, the "cool dad") as more or less Michael Scott: Family Man.

**Hurwitz and friends often rip into S&D on the AD commentary tracks. The one specific bit I actually remember from this show involved the main character's goofball brother-in-law (whose sexless marriage is only slightly less awkward than his attempts at a midlife acting career) worrying about whether an x-ray machine will be able to see through the denim shorts it's implied he must have on under his clothes. Seriously.

I kind of liked Sons and Daughters.

And, yeah, Bowen, Dutch, and Sofia Vergara are the best things about this show.

So, I'll probably watch it when I remember it's on.

I didn't see the pilot, but I thought the episode last night was pretty fantastic.  I can definitely see the AD/Office similarities, but I'm fine with that since AD is off the air and The Office sucks.  And Krista Allen was hot as shit in this.

"The only thing his dad and Superman have in common is they both landed in this country illegally."

and

"We're all blowing bubbles."

"Oh, how nice for........the babies."

I think they're probably the best part of the show next to Ed O'Neil.  I guess I'm just proving Thrill right again.

I only have seen one episode; the one where the Zambrano, Jr. kid fences the little Jap kid with a terminal illness or something and the gay brother and the sister do the retarded ice skating routine in the parking lot.  Other than the chick from Ed and that extremely hot Messican broad, I was thoroughly "meh"-ed to death.

This show is fine. It's obviously nowhere near as good as the Office or 30 Rock or Arrested Development, but that doesn't mean it can't be an amusing half hour of television. The voiceovers at the end with the message of the week are lame, and a couple of the episodes have been clunkers, but its usually funny and its got Ed O' Neill and Phil the Inept Dad and Sofia's wobbly mammaries.

John Larroquette was so funny he was able to bring the show up to good and funny, although I still found it to be, by most standards,  an overrated show that rode the coattails of stronger programming that preceeded it.

You got any other hairs to split with that axe, Thrillbunyan?

Ed Norton and Elizabeth Banks.  Classic.  You're missing out if you are missing this show.

The best part of the episode was when Al Bundy squirted MiniZambrano with the water bottle.

I agree, and that pretty much sums up my feelings on the show.

Try MiniZ...it's snappier.

I watched the rerun of the bike episode last night, and was underwhelmed.

After Modern Family, I watched the first 5 minutes of the Patricia Heaton show about the Indiana family.  I'm pretty sure it's Malcolm in the Middle, which I'm pretty sure was Roseanne, but it was way more terrible because it has Patricia Heaton and doesn't have Bryan Cranston.

That's the show that looks like Malcolm in the Middle without Malcolm, right? What's that one called again?

This show is just good enough that I don't mind if the wife wants to watch it, but don't care if I miss it. The spray bottle to MiniZ was good though.

Went back and watched the first episode.  Wasn't bad, but nothing I plan on continuing.  The female lead just killjoys it for me.  I know she's popular, I know she's 'hot', but she's also a shrill unfunny loud bitch.  Yeah, I said it.  WhaBam!

The end, with the dad spiking a block into his son's face while playing basketball in an enclosed trampoline, now that was funny.  I'll echo his line, as a message to the show -- "don't bring that weak stuff into my kitchen".

I nutted up and watched another episode a week or two ago. The dreamy Benjamin Bratt guest starred.

I renew my objection to this show.

SofĂa Vergara is still unbelievable and Ed O'Neill is still pretty hilarious.

And the gay dudes are still comedy butt cancer.

Yep. Sometimes I start to like this show, but then they resort to tired sitcom tricks like Sofia Vergara overhearing/misunderstanding a conversation. It's like watching Three's Company, and as much as like Ed O'Neil.....he's no John Ritter.

A dog butler episode?  Booo.  This show needs more funny, and the most funny is Manny and the blonde chick's husband.  The blonde chick and Vergara can just mud wrestle in the background.

Oh, there was a nice exchange at the pool with Ed O'Neil and the gay ginger.  I can't think of the lines, but I remember laughing at Al Bundy a lot.

If it's any consolation, the gay guys are still the comedy equivalent of having a boil lanced.

This was mostly about Ed O'Neill, Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen being funny last night, and Sofia Vergara having massive breasts.

Phil and mini Z are awesome in this show.  Oh, I told my wife that if this show goes on for a few more years, Haley will be the hottest (you know, after she's "legal").  But, I checked her IMDB and it turns out she's 20.  Um...that doesn't seem right.

Great comedy writing here. It puts the misunderstandings high jinx on Three's Company look like dog crap on a sidewalk. Cameron trying to down the spicy food made for some fun visuals, complete with matted, sweaty hair and glistening face. "I feel like I ate the sun!" is a great line, I don't care what anyone says.

The fat gay makes this show, and yes, the ginger has to be humorless and fussy to let the fatty soar. Julie Bowen does have the thankless task of playing the harried mom character, but her tits easily make up for the lack of comedy gold.

Al Bundy plays it nicely understated. His jogging outfit in the pilot was great, and his faint, but persistent homophobia is a source of subtle comedy. His insistence at ringing the doorbell and announcing his arrival upon coming into the home of his gay son is the faithful adherence to the character. He's still not keen about having a gay, and he winces at all the right moments, but you never get the sense he dislikes his son. A realistic take on a father of a gay adult.

I enjoyed Al's line upon seeing the ginger in the dress: "It looks good on you. You know, if you're that type of a gay."

DPD.  We don't talk about Modern Family anymore?  Booo...this show is pretty solid.  I know the gays were referred to as comedic AIDS or whatever, but I think the fat bear gay is pretty funny.  Sofia Vergara may be one of the hottest chicks on TV.  Julie Bowener also revs my engines.

I think it's getting less funny. They're reverting to more tired cliched sitcom-type jokes as the series goes on.

Roasted. The best part is that Vergara wasn't even wearing a bikini. There should be a special thread for Mr. Chuck and IAN to drool over mostly clothed actresses.

I love how they had her mix the milk with a low cut shirt on.  That was "product placement" at it's finest.

The two episodes haven't measured up to the promise offered by last season, but their steadily-improving gags are making good filler in the meantime.  Like Cameron's Rube Goldberg process of falling over the couch.  It was predictable, but the payoff was still hilarious.

I still think Phil's the most hilarious but they may ruin the risk of making him too much of a caricature....I don't know.  Just get better.

Aren't most of the jokes on Modern Family pretty predictable though?  They either telegraph their jokes, or the show sticks so closely to traditional gags/formulas that we know what's coming because we've seen it happen too many times before.

Then again, maybe I just watch too much TV.

It's the mystery. If Columbiatits posed for Playboy part of the hotness of her would be gone. Same with Annie. It's the wonder of how glorious it is beneath. I'm not sure what's so hard to get about that.

DPD.

Nice "Godfather 2" ref with Phil & Claire.

Also, I like living in a world where I watch a show where Julie Bowen is the second hottest woman.

Seriously.

Also, why do people think Nathan Lane is funny?  Talented, theatrical, good singing voice, sure.  But I find that guy as funny as bladder cancer.

I thought that bladder cancer was in the list of "funny cancers".

I thought he was funny on 30 Rock that one time, but I can't recall him being funny in anything else.

I liked this episode a lot.  I don't know if the writers did it on purpose, but they somehow addressed the two things that irk me and I guess other viewers:  Sofia Vergara's accent and the Beardgay.  Sofia's accent was openly addressed in the plot or whatever, but Beardgay getting face punched was totally random and out of the blue.  I loved every second.
