Title: Dock Ellis & The LSD No-No
Post by: Internet Apex on November 21, 2009, 11:53:15 AM
This may be DRLP in the Youtube thread but I don't want to dig in there to find out. If you haven't seen this animated short depicting Dock Ellis' LSD-induced "No-No," then I feel supremely confident about the chances of you enjoying the next five minutes of your life.

Since the Shoutboxes are dead, I figure this is as good as a forum as any...anyone up for a downtown Desipio lunch sometime in the next week or so?

Are you planning on having LSD for lunch?

Getting closer to a minyon by the minute.

CT? RV? Flanj? Who else is downtown these days?  Is Morph still downtown or do we need to find a place with a helipad?

My schedule is a bit hit or miss over the next couple of weeks but if the date works I could find room for a plate of optotaes.

Right now, I would be okay on M-W-F but not T-Th.  But my schedule's been so subject to change lately that I'd suggest you guys just pick a day and if I can show I will.

OK...I think we may have narrowed this to next Thursday or Friday.  If CT can make Thursday work with his scheduling, that may be a go.  Otherwise, next Friday?  Monk's at 11:30?

You have to post it on his Facebook wall for 3 years from now so he can share it as a memory and be reminded to come to lunch.

As long as we're assured of real-life Chuck and not a coin flip of him and Internet Chuck.  We're going to need a lot of coins.

Thursday is a go.  Let's do this!

Sounds good, my Thursday just opened back up.

Everything is coming up Millhouse.

My second phone interview went extremely well today, so my arrival in the world of downtown work beginning in early December is up to a clean 73% pending a suit and boot faceofff with the CEO. See you soon, octaroons.

Shitty time of the year for a window washer to start a new gig.

The training process is pretty long and intense, so I should be slamming into your office window by the time the spring hits.

Apologies, and I very much regret that I can't make Thursday. I'm sure this will cause a cascade effect resulting in only one Desipiot showing up.
Which one will it be?

Since it was my idea, it'll probably be me.  But if Jon and CT also showed up, it would make it worthwhile.  That, of course, depends on which Chuck showed up, internet or real-life.

So, roll call?  CT? Jon? Chuck?

I barely had time to run to the lobby to grab a bowl of soup, if it makes you feel any better.

It was some good-ass lobster bisque, so I certainly feel better.

Same here, operating a man down so I had a clerk sneak soup and a sandwich past security so I could wolf something at my desk.

Guess my annual self-review won't do itself.  See you gents soon and good luck 'pex on the interview.

Thanks bossman. They moved it up to Monday. Not good or bad news, it's just to accommodate the CEO's schedule. Good lord willin' and the creek don't rise I'll be heading to work some day next week to hand in my resignation like:

For those following along - Huey avert your eyes - my interview went well enough yesterday. The CEO told me he wants me to visit in person with a senior VP, whom I've already spoken with by phone. That will involve a drive to the burbs and possibly a trip to a client site.

My belief is that companies don't normally give a person this type of runaround unless they're very serious. They say they're trying to make sure I'm a good fit for the company culture  (affable guy like me, what's not to love?) But what they really want to know is if you'll show up where you're supposed to be when they ask you to and look ready for business.

I also learned (through context clues) that they're adding more than just one person.

Consistently talking about this is making me uneasy, FYI. So this will be my last post on the subject until the end of the saga.

Here's my interpretation of how Apex's interview actually went:

Scene: Wood paneled office.  The CEO sits behind a mahogany desk large enough to land a plane on.

CEO: *presses intercom button*: "Martha, please send in the next candidate."

*Enter Apex, he is wearing a suit and tie, but no shirt. The sleeves have been cut off his jacket*

CEO: "Your credentials and references are impeccable sir.  So my only question is, what can you tell me that I don't already know?"

Apex: "In softball, a leadoff triple is as good as a home run. Jose Macias was bad, but so was Jeromy Burnitz. Ken Griffey Jr. never lifted a weight in his damn life."

CEO: *Leans back in his chair, looks thoughtful, then pushes a button on his desk*

*A hatch in the ceiling opens, and a mixture of balloons, confetti and hundred dollar bills falls rains down on the room*

Apex: *stands up from his chair with his arms raised triumphantly in the air*

Apex: "Bazinga."

If we're talking people very loosely in our circles, I wonder if Harry Pavlidis is a fit since so much of his work is PITCHf/x focused.

Anyone going to apply for this (http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/job-posting-chicago-cubs-analyst-pitching-evaluation-research-development/)?

I imagine ChuckD is the only person here who would have any glimmer of hope.

If we're talking people very loosely in our circles, I wonder if Harry Pavlidis is a fit since so much of his work is PITCHf/x focused.

Wait...he's loosely in our circles?  Did I miss something?

Monk's.  Nice sit down.  No hassles.  11:30. My calendar is blocked off 11-1.  Boom.

To be fair, the only improv in the Sceptered Isle seems to be Whose Line, which is downright terrible, even by the fairly low standards of improv.

Speaking of personal news, this idiot passed the bar exam. God help us.

Which state?  In any event, congratulations.

Thanks, Stew.  California.

So what are we looking at?  5 of us?

Flannj, Hawk, CT, Fork, and me?  Jon coming in from HP? Is RV alive? Has Peck started shilling for the man downtown yet?

Am I missing anyone?

They're going to re-schedule again anyway, so don't worry about it.

I'll be there. That should be enough to get a few more cancellations.

I did leave my headphones at home and it's like a six block walk for me.  So, there's that.

I usually get a burger, but I won't hear a word against their blackened chicken sandwich (which I think can still be had by request).

I said I wouldn't post on my job-switch saga until it was at an end but I'm going to provide an update in case anyone actually gave a shit.

The company I interviewed with way back in mid-November brought me in for another meeting with the hiring manager and another with a team member on some "get to know you, see if it's a good fit" basis. That was in early December. Right before the holidays, the hiring manager said to give them a couple of weeks due to vacations and etc. They called me last Friday and asked me what I was looking for and when I could start. I told them and they said, "Great!"

Then I received an email last night saying they're very interested but they're having trouble "finding the right opportunity" for me within the organization. It's going to take longer than they thought they said, and asked if I could hang on for another month (or so). I haven't responded to that yet but I've gotten advice from family members along the lines of "tell them you're not interested" or "keep the door open but move on."

Meanwhile, back at my current gig, a house fell on the other director who was making my life a living hell so I can soldier on there for a while longer as I regroup and start flooding the LinkedIns with resumes and how do you dos.

I'm a lucky guy. I have a great life. I have no more stress than Person A. But job searching is the absolute fucking worst. Other than, cancer and child deformities and paralysis and deadly accidents and Republicans and Hillary Clinton, I mean. It's bad.

I would say there's no reason to close the door on this opportunity but there's no reason you shouldn't be looking anyway.  It's like dating.  You're not going steady with this new job yet so keep your options open.

Job searching is both awful and amazing.  There's nothing quite like getting to the goal-line where you're exchanging salary expectations.  It totally sucks to get the rug pulled out from under you. It sucks even more when you're out of work.  Unless you have an amazing dog and lots of amazing pot and amazing mountain trails on which to bide your time.

Is it a government position? My brother is in the national forestry division and the job application process takes months from applying to being hired. It's crazy.

It's bad.

Is it a government position? My brother is in the national forestry division and the job application process takes months from applying to being hired. It's crazy.

I think we can all agree that Apex probably shouldn't work for the government

Is there really anyone here we feel comfortable paying with our tax dollars?

<-------------Case in point

Brightside of gov't work: no drug testing.

Also, did a literal house fall on him? I'd like to click the tell me more button if so

It's a Wizard of Oz reference. She decided not to return after maternity leave and took another position elsewhere. And there was much rejoicing.

I'm renewing my job hunt, while being a lot less finicky, as soon as I return to the mainland tomorrow.

I look forward to it as much as I'd look forward to being locked in a closet and being forced to listen to nothing but "Muskrat Love" for 10 years.

Then I received an email last night saying they're very interested but they're having trouble "finding an opportunity" for me within the organization.

I concur with this. Don't close the door but don't limit your options either. I just relocated to Southern California for a job I never applied for but instead was recruited for. Even so, it took forever - three months just to agree to terms, and almost the whole time I doubted it would actually happen since it was taking so long. But now I'm here and I love it. And if that can happen for me it can happen for you. So hang in there and keep looking. Eventually they'll quit playing with their dicks and bring you on, or you'll find something better. Godspeed.

I agree with all this as well, adding that if the simple act of hiring you has gotten stuck in the mud like this, you'd be wise to explore other options.

I wrote her back this morning and thanked them for their interest. I said that I'm exploring other opportunities and don't know what my availability will be in one month. I then sent out four resumes. So all of what you guys said, yes. And thanks for the input.

Thank you, and thanks for the update.  I've been hoping you were already settling in and was bummed to read this.  Um...go Cubs.
