Title: Winter Olympics 2010
Post by: morpheus on January 21, 2010, 08:34:34 AM
I didn't see any posts on the upcoming Olympics, so I figured I'd kick it off properly.

Anyone see a curling schedule? It's the only event I care for, and the only event any of you should as well.

You'll have to watch the majority of it online.
NBCOlympics.com is promising 1000 hours of online coverage, to offset much of what they won't show on TV (like Curling.)

You know, I do blame Canada for this.

Georgian luger dies after horrifying crash at Whistler track. (http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/Georgian+luger+dies+after+horrifying+crash+Whistler+track/2556532/story.html)

Especially when there are METAL POLES ON THE TRACK.

Oh, and not letting the athletes practice at the facilities before the games, because of some stupid jingoistic ideal that I thought was beneath them.

QuoteRaney, who spent more than seven years living in Canada and training with the Canadian national team, was told after the 2006 Olympics that the Canadians did not want foreign athletes training with them leading to the 2010 Games in Vancouver.

QuoteThe target is 35 medals, 11 more than Canada won in 2006 in Turin, Italy. Canada's Own the Podium program is pumping $110 million into the medal push, focusing on athletes most likely to finish in the top three. Alpine skiers, for example, are being counted on to win two medals. Besides gold medals in hockey and curling, Canada expects big hauls from speedskating and the sliding sports.

Own the Podium emphasizes the advantage gained by giving athletes time to acclimate.

1. Build an insanely over-the-limit course.
2. Only allow your guys to practice on it because of some stupid idea.
3. Eliminate the competition...literally.
6. PROFIT.

Fuck Canada.

I have no problem with most of this, but I find the complaint--here and elsewhere--that having exposed metal poles, or at the least, unpadded metal poles, faulty.  If you're whizzing around at 90 miles an hour it wouldn't matter what the hell was surrounding the track.  You'd be pretty much dead--or at least a brain-dead PANK eating food out of a straw for the rest of your life-- if you drifted off course at that speed.

See, at first, I kind of agreed with that sentiment, but imagine if there was a wall in place, other than these poles.  Sure, he'd probably be paralyzed, but that's better than not being alive.

Then, he can compete in the Paraylmpic Winter Games!

Those costumes were terrible and boring.

One thing I love about Olympics coverage (and tennis as an aside), is most of the announcers
are ex-competitors and are in no way shy about calling out the scoring, the athletes, whoever
and actually know and can explain the subtleties of the rules.  It's so nice to watch sports
where the announcers are contributing instead of ruining the experience.

Maybe.

Honestly, though, for all we know, the luge color guy talking about the two "pressure points" in turn six could be the luge equivalent of Joe Morgan talking about how there's no such thing as a "check swing" in the MLB rulebook.

I'll stick with the theory that announcer quality is negatively correlated with audience knowledgeability.

Meh, to some degree.  At the same time, as I mentioned above, tennis tends to have
actual excellent announcers.  NFL games have horrible ones.  I think the idea that there
aren't good announcers is just goofy.  I've followed a whole ton of winter sports this

Might it be that a lot of these sports have readily quantifiable metrics about what makes a "good" showing? And that they are often individual sports, which means you can't be praised/blamed for teammates?

Here's where Norway is as a country with hockey. I know some people often wonder why Norway sucks at hockey while Sweden and Finland are so damn good. It starts at the bottom. Interesting to hear that the better Norwegian players were ready to quit playing internationally if their federation didn't start taking it seriously.

And now he's sitting on the pine, nothing like having the puck for a minute on a delayed penalty, nailing the cross bar before getting the goal.  At least Toews was in the middle of it all.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/olympics/2010/02/a_word_about_nbc.html

Quote...

Take Monday. American Bode Miller went off eighth, and was really the first true star to take to the course in Whistler. To the naked eye, his run looked solid, and his teammates confirmed it later. He was excellent through the middle portion of the course, struggled slightly at the bottom, but was a contender the moment he finished.

"I saw Miller skiing," Didier Cuche of Switzerland, the pre-race favorite, said afterward, "and I said, 'That's maybe gold.'"

NBC would have loved it to be gold, and maybe they would have milked the skiing coverage if it had been. But I was stunned -- perhaps naively so -- by what happened next in the broadcast. They started jumping through the competition. They showed Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal, who went eight skiers after Miller, almost immediately. Svindal, of course, topped Miller by two hundredths of a second.

Then -- and this is where it started to get egregious -- they showed Switzerland's Didier Defago, who laid down the eventual gold medal-winning run. The problem: Defago was two skiers after Svindal. The bigger problem: The skier they skipped was Austria's Michael Walchhofer, officially the fastest guy in the pre-event training run, the downhill silver medalist in 2006, and a major contender in this race.

By this point, any fan with a real knowledge of skiing back home had to be completely alienated, and had to know something was up. So many storylines were being tossed aside, not the least of which was Canada's Manny Osborne-Paradis, who grew up at Whistler and is third in the World Cup downhill standings. But it continued to get worse. The 20th starter, two after Defago, was Switzerland's Carlo Janka, a rising star on the World Cup circuit who is second in the World Cup downhill standings. Did NBC show him? Nope.

They went right to Cuche, who started 22nd. They showed a little feature on how Cuche broke his thumb during the season, raising questions about his preparation for the Olympics. They had to show Cuche, who leads the downhill standings and is one of the best skiers in the world. But after that? They showed Canada's Robbie Dixon, who wiped out, and then quickly awarded the medals to Defago, Svindal and Miller. They didn't even show the final American, California's Marco Sullivan, who had a harrowing run and an eventual crash.

The result of all this is that a significant portion of the drama is sapped from the event. There's no sense of what it's like for Miller at the base of the mountain, wondering if Walchhofer or Cuche or Janka or someone else is going to knock him off the podium. There's also no sense of what a skiing competition is like. In a tacit way, NBC is admitting that Alpine skiing, one of the flagship sports of the Winter Olympics, isn't interesting enough to hold its audience.

Why, then, even broadcast the Games? I understand that America can't stop in the middle of a work day to watch a couple hours of skiing, and that delaying some things to prime time maximizes the audience. But how did NBC fill the time immediately after the skiing competition? With a feature from Mary Carillo, who I love. But it was from Manitoba, which is not near here. And it was on polar bears. Seriously.

The message: As you sit on your couch for the next two weeks, remind yourself that what you're watching are merely little slices of the Olympics. For most of America, the real Games will never be seen.

That.

So answer me this: with the Olympics being such a huge money pit for NBC, where do the games go from here? They've got it through 2012 as far as I can see, but will they really extend those rights? Nobody is going to accuse NBC of doing a good job of broadcasting this stuff except maybe Pre.

I'm sure there are some truly touching feelgood stories of olympic athletes. But I typically hate all of the ones that NBC does their stories on. A female snowboarder who loses a gold medal showboating and then falls 4 years later isn't a tragedy. And lets be honest, most of the American winter athletes are tailwinders. They are rich kids who play rich sports. How bad could their lives truly have been growing up? In Aspen.

That's a low blow.  I said that they tend to have good announcers,
I didn't say they handle anything else well.  I do not love polar bears.

One thing about the $250 million number is that they are going into
negotiations with the IOC.  I'm sure they are just starting the negotiation
process early.  Otherwise it doesn't make a lot of sense to announce
that you're having a hard time getting people to care about what you're
about to do.

Obviously he gets way higher than anybody else.  That's easy to notice.  But am I the only one that thinks that every double cork mctwist and every 1080 spin and every other move pretty much looks the exact same, no matter who is doing it?

That's just untrained eye. Like when people who've never watched a football game just see a bunch of assholes slamming into each other and then resting for almost a minute in between.

Or people who watch hockey and think that goals scored from loose pucks around the net is the result of guys just blindly hacking away their sticks and getting lucky.

Or people who troll Desipio and think we're a bunch of stupid, sexist jerks.

Jeez, you sound like a dumb-stupid woman, Oleg!

Dammit. Let me guess... CNBC?

In case you're utterly stumped (and home, for whatever reason) tomorrow - the US plays Norway on the USA network at 2 pm.

I'd noticed that and I will be.

I saw a piece on those guys on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on HBO last week. They were in training for the Olympics so they showed them practicing, talking about curling and sitting around in their remarkably shitty apartment eating McDonalds cheeseburgers while watching TV. Fascinating stuff. They had uniforms and everything.

Here in Canadaland, the pre-Olympic expectations were that your northern neighbors would win the most medals.

Like typical cannucks, nobody seems at all upset that The Plan isn't unfolding the way they'd hoped.  Everybody I've spoken to is thrilled with how Canada is playing.  And that's why this country will always be the home of losers.*

Granted, I can't specifically recall when I've watched Hiller play beyond the solid game he had at the UC a month or two ago. And I recall he showed up in the playoffs last year. But I don't see much in these numbers to get me excited enough to want to see the Hawks make some sort of blockbuster move:

Season
        Record      GAA     SV%    SV/G
Hiller  26-17-2    2.70    .919    29.3
Huet    24-11-4    2.29    .903    20.6
Niemi   17-4-1     2.16    .913    21.9

Career
        Record      GAA     SV%    SV/G
Hiller  59-39-4    2.46    .920    26.1
Huet    127-87-32  2.42    .915    24.4
Niemi   18-5-2     2.28    .908    21.3

That's just because their pre-Olympic expectations were unrealistic they're impatient assholes.

Nate Silver is still projecting 31 total medals'd (http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2010/02/vancouver-medal-count-projections-day-7.html)

That would be just 4 shy of the OWN THE PODIUM goal of 35 and only a couple off the US's projected first place finish.

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2010/02/consensus-olympic-medal-count.html

QuoteWhat I've done is to compile the projected medal winners in the 86 Winter Olympic disciplines from five six nine sources that forecasted individual winners; these are the Associated Press, USA Today, Sports Illustrated, McClatchy-Tribune, Examiner.com, Canwest, and (for some events only) ESPN.com and betting odds at Ladbrokes and bwin. Nothing terribly fancy here: I've taken a simple mean of the number of medals that each country was expected to win in each discipline, as averaged across the nine sources.

Those projections are just in fun (if you're pro-Silver) and just plain trying to drive up traffic if you're not.

Averaging a couple rankings isn't exactly accurate or sensible, although I'm sure he'd agree it's not meant
to be taken very seriously.

Serious snaggles. And the decent-looking blonde had kind of a strange lip.

The stern-looking brunette, though, apparently posed for the 2009 Women of Curling calendar (http://curlnews.blogspot.com/2008/09/2009-women-of-curling-calendar.html). (Possibly pictured somewhere in here. (http://www.anaarce.com/Calendario%20Curling/A-Curling%20Calendar.htm))

Sunday is hockey day. The final day of the round robin prelims, and the top four seeds coming out of this round get byes heading into the playoff bracket.

Seeds 1-3 go to the top team from each of the three prelim groups (ranked by points, then goal differential, then goals scored, then the countries' IIHF World Rankings).

The 4th seed is the best of the three second place teams (again, determined by points, then goal differential, then goals scored, then IIHF World Rankings).

And it's all hinging on the outcomes of three grudge matches today:

Russia and the Czechs play at 2pm
US and Canada play at 6:40pm
Sweden and Finland play at 11pm

Here are the remaining contenders for the top four spots as currently ranked...
   Team  GR   Pts  GD   GS   WR
1  FIN    1    6    9   10    4
2  USA    1    6    7    9    5
3  CZE    1    6    5    8    6
4  SWE    2    6    4    6    3
5  CAN    2    5    9   11    2
7  RUS    3    4    5    9    1
GR = Group rank
GD = Goal differential
GS = Goals scored
WR = IIHF World Ranking

(Slovakia, currently at 6th overall and 2nd in Group B, won 5 points in 3 games and are out of the running for the 4th seed.)

Obviously, with a win tonight, the US would be in the top three as the winner of Group A.

The way I'm reading this, though: even with a loss, if the they can pick up a point tonight, the only threat to their shot at a bye is a Finland overtime loss to Sweden. With a Finland win or a Sweden regulation win, the US would take the 4th seed (with 7 points and a goal differential of 6).

With a regulation loss, I think they can still snag a bye with:

1) A Sweden regulation loss OR a Finland regulation loss where the goal differential is three more than the US-Canada goal differential or greater OR a Finland regulation loss where the goal differential is two more than the US-Canada goal differential and Finland scores two goals less than the US scores

AND

2) A Russia loss OR a Czech regulation loss where the goal differential is one less than the US-Canada goal differential or greater OR a Czech regulation loss where the goal differential is two less than the US-Canada goal differential and the Czechs score no more than one more goal than the US

Got that?

If Sweden can beat Finland by less than 5 goals or take the game to extra time, the US will be sitting pretty at the 1 seed, waiting to face the winner of Belarus–Switzerland.

With the 2 seed, it would be the winner of Slovakia–Norway, followed (God willing) by the winner of Russia–Canada/Germany. Which I'd just as soon they avoid.

So I totally missed this game due to the fact that it was on MSNBC and I didn't have time to figure that out. I was at a bar around midnight last night and there was a dude in an Iginla, Canada shirt putting money in the juke box. He played Bare Naked Ladies and Johnny B. Good. Wot? Anyway I asked the dude who won the game and he just stared at me and said, "Are you fucking shitting me?" I assumed that meant that the USA had dominated yet another shitty country for no other reason than we can because we're the fucking USA.

So, hell yeah.

I don't like when they show the medal standings because they count all the medals as the same.

I think they should scale them:
Gold = 5
Silver = 3
Bronze = 1

And for the Woman's medals:
Gold = 3
Silver = 1
Bronze = 0.1

If you've seen Contact, you know that the 1936 Summer Games (with Jesse Owens) were the first Olympics broadcast on television.

To be fair, when I got the idea for the response, I was thinking about the Summer Games.  Then before posting, I decided to Wikipedia to the '36 Winter Games.  And, here we are.

Besides, Chuck, having seen Contact and remember details from the awful movie are two different things.

I am not a fan of the White people's Olympics, nor am I a hockey fan.  However, I found last night's game to be very intense, especially the final five minutes.  Who knows?  Maybe I will watch more of this stuff.

Stew, I think your TV is still set at 1936.

Oleg is watching his Olympics from a Harry Turtledove alternate reality where Hitler got the A-bomb.

I thought it the one where the South won the Civil War and the 1936 Olympics were in Richmond.

That depends on how you define "atheist"...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Sagan#Personal_life_and_beliefs

QuoteSagan wrote frequently about religion and the relationship between religion and science, expressing his skepticism about the conventional conceptualization of God as a sapient being. For example:

QuoteSome people think God is an outsized, light-skinned male with a long white beard, sitting on a throne somewhere up there in the sky, busily tallying the fall of every sparrow. Others—for example Baruch Spinoza and Albert Einstein—considered God to be essentially the sum total of the physical laws which describe the universe. I do not know of any compelling evidence for anthropomorphic patriarchs controlling human destiny from some hidden celestial vantage point, but it would be madness to deny the existence of physical laws.

Sagan, however, denied that he was an atheist: "An atheist has to know a lot more than I know." In reply to a question in 1996 about his religious beliefs, Sagan answered, "I'm agnostic." Sagan maintained that the idea of a creator of the universe was difficult to prove or disprove and that the only conceivable scientific discovery that could challenge it would be an infinitely old universe.

"Contact" is a great book.  Sagan devoted much of it to both sides on the religion v. science issue.  And kept it all entertaining.  He's well regarded for his ability to explain science in terms dopes like us could understand, but he was a hell of an author, too.

Dempster, of course, guaranteed a World Series title for the Cubs in 2008.

Just how many bets did Dempster make?

Who writes his stuff, Kaseberg?

Fork.

Kevin Millar.

The hope for a fatal crash including Millar and  Dempster in a clown car with Ronnie Woo-Woo and his Fabulous Red Bicycle has suddenly rejuvanted my spirits regarding this year's Cubs team.

I know it's fun and games to hate Dempster but if he gets hurt, you really will not want to watch this team.

Apparently now MAD's spirits are not so rejuvanted.

This is a conundrum.  I get pulled back in due to that unfunny asshat's demise, only to see a team with Garbanzo Beans, a reverted Randy Wells, and Carlos Silva manning the back-end of the rotation.  Fuck.

At least Angel Guzman will have THREE angels on his shoulder. Of course two of them will be trying to talk the third into doing a really unfunny Stooges routine.

That's just because their pre-Olympic expectations were unrealistic.

Canada is set to end the Olympics with the most gold medals.  But congrats to the US for being the first and second losers the most often.
