Title: Things Cubbie Julie can spend $3500 on without making her bank suspicious
Post by: Andy on January 26, 2010, 04:40:08 PM
The lovely and talented (muahahaha) Cubby Julie has an eloquent post today about how she lost her purse and somebody ran up $3500 on her debit card.

http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/league-of-her-own/2010/01/dear-chase-fuck-you.html

She's apoplectic that her bank's fraud alert system would let someone blow past her limit (and her account balance) without putting a stop to it.

So obviously it must be that whatever they bought didn't seem out of character for her.  What could that be?

This is so false, it's awesome.

"Dear Chase,

Hey, remember back in the Winter/Spring of 2008/2009 when your business was in serious trouble? If I remember correctly, you were pretty much screwed. Back then, American taxpayers, against their better judgment, I would add, ponied up $25 billion to help out your bank alone. At the time, you promised to do everything you could to pay back the money and be the kind of banking institution America would be proud of."

There was a $3500 charge at one Target alone. Yeesh.

Anyway, Chuck's fired for not urging her to go with American Chartered.

I would cite the link for instant rim shot, but that would be more than this joke deserves.

Back in Dec. somebody copied my debit card and lifted about two grand off it in two days.  I caught it before the bank, notified them, and had to wait about a week and a half for them to investigate the expenditure before they refunded me the cash.

Two grand.  Gone for more than a week.  And when they returned it to my checking account, I was reallyfuckinggrateful.  Guess I should have gotten PISSED and blogged about how much the bank -- and their apparently ridiculous policies designed to protect me -- sucks.

Naw, I just would've told you the story about how I had to take my wife to the emergency room last week and we were treated in a couple of hours, while her aunt is in Florida (with travel insurance) and had to go to the emergency room and was there for at least half a day.

Then again, since when is Florida a good representation of the rest of the US?

A week and a half? I had my debit card lifted in Ezeiza airport, didn't notice for four days, and the idiots at my bank took more than three months to restore the funds. They kept insisting that I return to Argentina to obtain a police report.

Your aunt just isn't doing it right.  Emergency room visits work best when you're in urgent
need of care, say with blood pouring from your face.  You get bumped to the front of the
line and get to bleed on everything and they take good care of you.  If someone goes to the
emergency room for something that isn't an emergency, then they should rot on a bench.
If you have a real emergency, then a few hours doesn't mean a fucking thing and you're just
happy they treated you and you didn't die.

Unless you aunt died, in which case I still mean what I said but I offer my condolences and
suggest against going to Florida.

You make a valid point.  She was only vomiting until it gave her seizures, which comparatively is inconsequential to the sort of shit that Florida deals with on an hourly basis.

Coulda been worse. Your aunt could have wound up at Michelle Obama's sinecure test facility (http://www.epmonthly.com/whitecoat/2009/03/university-of-chicagos-emtala-violation/):

QuoteAccording to news reports, a 78-year-old man was brought to the emergency room by ambulance about 12:30 PM. He was put into a wheelchair in the waiting room, but was neither triaged nor logged in. At 4:15 PM, the patient's daughter wheeled the patient to the triage nurse to ask about the delay. The triage nurse noted that the man wasn't breathing and called a code, even though rigor mortis had already set in.

I totally agree with you.  Only isn't that what conservatives are doing whenever they example a failure of the Canadian health care system?  They trumpet anecdotes about facility-deprived Cannucks who had to be emergencied into US hospitals or risk death.  Seems to me that reality is probably somewhere between the two extremes.  Like with Julie -- is her bank really a faceless corporation with no care or concern for her lost money, or is she acting in a childish, petulant manner because Chase isn't the McDonald's of the banking world (your way, right away)?  Probably a little bit of both.

Well, I'm no doctor.

But are you A doctor?

Hey I didn't even bother to click on the article until now, choosing just to take potshots all this time out of reflex, but holy crap it's entitled "Hey Chase:  FUCK YOU"?

Who the hell is she?

For the record, since we're all relating such riveting and engrossing personal vignettes, I've been with Chase since they were First Chicago here, and in 2002/2003 I left my card in the ATM at the Wacker/Lake/Frankling building (333?).  I didn't have my phone that ensuing weekend and it turns out Chase security had been trying to reach me, noting suspicious activity.  Two $200 charges, one at a K-Mart down by Homewood (I think), and $200 from a Wal-Mart across the street.   When I realized what was going on--again after their prompting--they immediately credited my account.  So not only did they pay me back, but their system had already been tipped off to suspicious activity.  I guess that's Andy's point.  If you're generally not too spendy, your bank will get your back if something's off.  But just inelegantly screaming at Chase like some screeching dingbat works too, I guess.

DPD.

Nice to see one-time vanguard of local righteous moral indignity Dennis Byrne joining the potty mouth brigade. (http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/league-of-her-own/2010/01/dear-chase-fuck-you.html#comment-162764)

QuoteMy sympathies for this screwing over. The bailout should never have happened in the first place. Thanks to all the taxpayer money, they could go their merry way, giving out huge bonuses and screwing their customers like this. We keep hearing that we had to do this or else we all would have been sucked into some black hole. Bull shit. If Chase like other companies had to please their customers to stay in business, things like this never would have happened. That's what we get for thinking that government can and should come to the rescue for all our problems.

Bull shit?  Tsk tsk, Dennis.

Two grand.  Gone for more than a week.  And when they returned it to my checking account, I was reallyfuckinggrateful.  Guess I should have gotten PISSED and blogged about how much the bank -- and their apparently ridiculous policies designed to protect me -- sucks.

It is appalling that a tiny company like chase with like 40 accounts didn't notice an unrealistic charge at a store she probably shops at all the time to call and ask her about it. With $3500 in her account, she's a big fish. And that they didn't let her know where she lost her wallet. For 24 hours. It's all about money, money, money for these financial institutions. OUR financial institutions, now that OBAMA'S GOONSQUAD bailed them all out!!! Huey's brother should know better. He should have called.

Evans is still on sale, as long as you spend more than $125. (http://www.target.com/Evans-TV-Stand-Espresso/dp/B001MS0ER8/sr=1-1/qid=1264615657/ref=sr_1_1/178-4910776-8326803?ie=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&frombrowse=0&index=target&rh=k%3AEVANS&page=1)

Seeing that you're charging up $3,500 on Julie's Debit Mastercard (There are some things money can't buy. For everything else, there's CubbieJulie's Mastercard), you she would be eligible for the savings.

Assuming 10% Cook County tax, you could buy 28 of this Evans product.

How weird!

They've been extra cautious ever since Cubbie Julie and her bailout squad began their vendetta against the Pierponts.

But weird indeed.

Or is it more of a self-defecating "How can anyone be less funny than the Diceman when that turd's already not funny at all?" kind of paradox?

QuoteThe event was unlike anything Kevin had ever seen. That's saying a lot for the man who was named "Pig Virus" by Howard Stern.

"It was like a parade of characters," Kevin said later. "You never knew what they were going to say next."

We think that's a good thing--both online and off.

So that's why we are inviting everyone to join us for a ChicagoNow meet-up. This Thursday, Feb. 18 we will gather for drinks starting at 6 p.m. at the Clark Street Ale House. The bar is located at 742 N. Clark and a short walk from the Chicago Ave. stop on the Red Line.

If you want to meet some of our bloggers or talk to the staff about starting your own blog on ChicagoNow, do drop by.

Sounds wonderful (http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/staff-blog/2010/02/chicagonow-meet-up-this-thursday-feb-18.html)!

What ChicagoCarless probably doesn't understand is that the writing on ChicagoNow is shitty. Throw in technical problems, half-assed support from the parent company, and a setup that fosters us vs. them (i.e. writers for the paper vs. bloggers), and you have a venture that won't go anywhere.

Then again, with Greenfi running it, what could go wrong?

I think that's directly related to the shit he's complaining about.

They seem to have thought that, simply by stuffing the channel with hundreds of shitty blogs (http://www.desipio.com/?p=2710), they could automatically generate enough money-making traffic to never have to worry about quality or bothering to hire a single dedicated developer.

IAN and Yeti were comedy gold.  So was Dubbs, for the brief period of time before he was given the boot.

Walker>Grudzielanek.

As Cubs:

Standard Batting:
Walker- .286/33/130/.353/.447/.800
Grudzielanek- .312/9/61/.360/.421/.781

EDGE: Walker

Fielding:
Walker- .982 Fielding %, RTOT (measures how many runs a fielder saves or costs their team): -5
Grudzielanek- .986 Fielding %, RTOT: +17.3

EDGE: Grudzielanek, by a total of 22.3 runs he'd save over your Average Todd Walker

HOWEVA,
Runs created per game:
Walker- 5.7
Grudzielanek- 5.4

Meaning over the course of a 162 games, an all Todd Walker lineup would outscore an all Grudzielanek lineup by 48.6 runs. Subtract the 22.3 runs on defense that Grudzielanek offered over Walker, and Todd Walker is still worth a net of 26.3 more runs per year than Grudzielanek.

Note: Only data from their time in a Cub uniform was used.

Boom. Roasted.

There is no argument really. One guy was just a guy and the other was Todd Fucking Walker. Defensive statistics don't calculate the extra stress unmade plays put on a pitcher's arm. Feel free to flame on me for that comment. But when you're watching a game and hoping against hope that your pitchers keep their pitch counts down so that slapdick relievers don't have to come in and trash the game, defense matters. When things don't go right in that regard I get a bug up my ass so far I could puke diesel fuel into the tank of the Hatemobile enough to make it run for a week without respite. I needed an outlet for that hate then as I do now. And Todd fit the bill. So fuck him. Forever.

Webcam shoutbox.  I can't find the link...link us, Ira Shetti.

I have the transcript on my home computer... I will find and edit it, post for all His glory. It was hilarious. IAN was a fucking stud... and it was possibly the creepiest thing I've ever seen on the internets.. That's saying a lot.

I find this cryptic post very disturbing.  Even moreso that it resides in a CubbyJulie thread.

Hint: http://tinychat.com/lohochat

I still see nothing.

Trust me. This entire affair is more overrated than Bobby Hill.

You're just asshurt because we were more interested in that than your re-hashing your Todd Walker hate with SKO.  Get over yourself.

I'm perfectly content to talk to myself in the Sbox, let alone have a meaningless discussion of Todd F. Walker with a fine lad of SKO's ilk. Get over yourself.

Walker>Grudzielanek.

As Cubs:

Standard Batting:
Walker- .286/33/130/.353/.447/.800
Grudzielanek- .312/9/61/.360/.421/.781

EDGE: Walker

Fielding:
Walker- .982 Fielding %, RTOT (measures how many runs a fielder saves or costs their team): -5
Grudzielanek- .986 Fielding %, RTOT: +17.3

EDGE: Grudzielanek, by a total of 22.3 runs he'd save over your Average Todd Walker

HOWEVA,
Runs created per game:
Walker- 5.7
Grudzielanek- 5.4

Meaning over the course of a 162 games, an all Todd Walker lineup would outscore an all Grudzielanek lineup by 48.6 runs. Subtract the 22.3 runs on defense that Grudzielanek offered over Walker, and Todd Walker is still worth a net of 26.3 more runs per year than Grudzielanek.

Note: Only data from their time in a Cub uniform was used.

Boom. Roasted.

So we're arguing about guys that are about 1 run a week different from each other?

Are you new here?

But seriously, I don't actually care. My original argument was that I liked Walker more than Grudzielanek because Walker never got injured and forced me to watch Ramon F&%king Martinez. The statistical research was actually just me blowing time at work. Work fucking sucks.

You mean I was wasting my time basing my judgment on their respective five o'clock shadows?

I laughed aloud.

I just thought it was ironic that the guy who has irrationally defended Milton Bradley for inane reasons calls you guys out over this argument.
