Title: Fallout: New Vegas
Post by: Yeti on September 08, 2010, 03:13:09 PM
Who is getting this one? I've been venturing back through Fallout 3 cleaning up some achievements, finding all the locations, bobbleheads, etc. I'm pretty geared up about this one. The visuals in F3 were pretty awesome, and I'm expecting more of the same, especially since Vegas hasn't been struck with nukes and isn't completely fucked up.

I know they have done some changes on VATS for melee weapons. For example, if hitting someone with a 9-iron using VATS, you'll get a special option for a "Fore" hit, which will be a unique animation. Could be fun, but I rarely melee'd, so I may not see it at all.

Upgradeable guns will be nice, instead of just repairing a weapon over and over. There is a Hardcore mode that will be cool, but I'm a pussy so I won't do it probably. Some of the features in that are:

Quote# Healing over time rather than instant healing.
# Healing of crippled limbs requires a high medicine skill and medical equipment.
# Ammunition has weight.
# Currency has weight
# Requirement of water consumption to avoid dehydration and eventual death.
# Requirement of food consumption and sleeping to avoid starvation and sleep deprivation.

This is an easy Day 1 purchase for me.  Leave the second guessing to the junk-shavers and head for the wastes my man.  Most anticipated release this year.

I'm definitely getting it.  Maybe not right at release, but at some point.  Like Yeti, I'm planning on going back and finally finishing Fallout 3.  It's a terrific game, but I'm just so overwhelmed by those ridiculously-open-world games that I have a hard time finishing them.  I might wait to pick up all of them, but my must-haves before the end of the year are Fallout: New Vegas, Rock Band 3, Fable III, Dead Rising 2, and the Telltale Back to the Future games.

Next year is all about Portal 2 and Deus Ex.  I have high hopes for both of them.

Already pre-ordered this one. Fallout 3 is one of the best games I've ever played. This should be better.

And Yeti, you've never done much melee and neither have I - but I do think that the greatest Fallout 3 video is a melee video. Peep this:

I watched that whole thing and laughed at practically every kill.

Finished Fallout 3 yesterday.  Bad ass.  Liberty Prime was hysterical.  I'm laughably unobservant when it comes to video games, but was I the only one who didn't even notice Liberty Prime until the very end of the game?

I think I did. Could you see him from outside the Brotherhood HQ? I never saw him from outside, but noticed him while walking around inside the lab. I think I only have one mission from the main part of the game left, and that's Strictly Business, in which I need to enslave people, but because I have morals when I play the game, I'm going to elect to kill the slavers at Point Pleasant (or whatever the town is). From there, I'm basically 99% complete. Maybe find a few more bobbleheads, and I'll be happy

I went into Paradise Falls guns blazing and fucking leveled that town. It was one of the better moments of my campaign.

Sounds like I have a good task for tonight. I should take the Experiment MIRV I got and do it. If anyone doesn't have it, it shoots 8 mini-nukes in a spread fashion

I know there are more strategic ways to do but I tried talking sense into the guard and he was a real cocky, disagreeable sort. I had just obtained a Gauss Rifle and was itching to use it. The resulting carnage was fantastic to see. Have fun - it's a blast.

Side note: I'm extremely jealous and impressed you found and built the MIRV.

Save the game right before Point Pleasant, do the slave missions for the achievement, and then reload your saved game and fuck those dudes up.  That's what I did.

I should have done more of this. What killed me was that when I reached the point where Liberty Prime was going to lead myself and the Brotherhood to the doorstep of victory he wouldn't fucking move from the base of the bridge. He'd just stand there. Turns out it was a bug based on one of the knights being killed in an earlier mission or some such shit.

As it were, I reloaded a previous save and yet somehow lost all the sweet loot I had up to that point and had to redo a lot of stuff. Didn't nearly get as granular as I had the first go-round and so it was sort of buzzkill.

Still, I think Fallout 3 has been my favorite non-sports game to date.

For some reason, I can restart a game from the beginning and enjoy it on another playthrough, but I absolutely HATE replaying parts I've already done in the same saved game.

Agreed. I think it's because each Wanderer you start with goes through each experience for the first time and each one adds up to make him what he is. So doing it again with the same dude sucks. It'd be like taking the same math class twice. Blech.

Yea, I spent a lot of time working on things, finding everything I possibly could. Due to finding so many skill books and buying the Brotherhood of Steel upgrade (increased the cap to 30 levels), I have most of my skill points at 100 (Sneak, melee, speech are some that I remember slighting). I've found a shitload of stuff. The locker at my house has probably 1000 pounds (or WG) of shit in there. I can only sell so much to Moira (I think I have over 10,000 caps, maybe).

This is my second playthrough. On the first, I inadvertently beat the game without knowing it was the end. I also wasn't as smart with upgrading at each level because I was unaware of the original 20 level cap. Then, the thing that made me start over is that I was reading about The Pitt upgrade when I bought it and someone online said they were able to drop all their weapons right outside of the gate and then had them after they got in there. I tried it (didn't save before either) and when I got in there, they were all gone. So, I started a new playthrough. This one has been much much more fun.

And as far as saving before Paradise Falls (sorry for getting the name wrong), I don't have the mesmetron anymore. I need to find a new one, first. And if I enslave anyone, it'll probably be the guy from Big Town, since I can fuck that town up

The Big Town/Little Town (what was it called?) shit was creepy. Those kids were dicks.

Anyway, I only got the Op Anchorage and Brotherhood packs because I read the rest were buggy and stupid. The Op Anchorage one was a blast. Felt like COD but still Fallout. Plus the stealth Chinese armor became my outfit of choice the rest of the game. Fucking bad ass.

Sounds excellent and really open with the stories. The best part of F3 was the open endedness and how everything you did affected the entire game. I really love the main world story though about the war with the Chinese and all the lore that goes with it. I remember reading everything I could find on the web about the Enclave and Annexation of Canada, etc. I love dystopian stuff so this game appeals to that part of me in a big way.

Um, so should I get this Fallout 3 game?  If I did, it would be my first Fallout and I don't really care for monsters and ray guns, but I do like open worlds, interesting set pieces and good stories.  Is New Vegas the next Fallout or just a DLC offering?

The first developer's diary (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/17/fallout-new-vegas-dev-diary-has-a-story-to-tell/) is awesome.

It's not Fallout 4 (which I believe is actually being made) but it's a totally separate game that takes place in the Fallout universe on the other side of the country. Different factions, different character, you don't start out in a Vault, blah blah. It's not a sequel and it's not an add on. It's a totally new, separate game.

I don't like non-sports games for the most part so it's rare that I find games like this so enjoyable. In fact, I had Fallout 3 for a long time and I started it then put it down for months before going back. Why? Well it was hard to do anything when you start out such a pussy. Fucking mole rats were kicking my ass. Not to mention the game was creeping me out on a regular basis. With the silence and the wandering and the gross mutated creatures that can come from nowhere I was cringing non-stop.

I remember fighting a couple of raiders on the bridge that headed into downtown DC. In the middle of this firefight a goddamn radscorpion creeped up on me. Yes, a big, man-sized scorpion that was trying to kill me as I was exchanging pot shots with a couple of punks dressed like Mad Max. You hear the claws but by then it's too late.

It's an awesome, awesome game and I think you should buy it. Get the GOTY edition.

What's the advantage of the GOTY edition?

Also, to your point about not liking nonsports games, I get it.  I really only play military FPS games or sports games myself and the only other games not in those categories that I loved or even cared to play were Zelda's Ocarina of Time and GTA.  Those were legendary, so how does this compare?

I play GTA and will continue to do so. The thing I loved about Fallout was that things got more and more convoluted as you went along. The war got heavier. The Enclave started showing up in more and more places with their caged deathclaws. I loved how at first I had only read about deathclaws and had no idea what it would look like when I eventually stumbled across one. I had read that they hung out in packs in the town of Old Olney up north. I wouldn't dare go up there until I was damned good and ready. It's just all the shit you can do. You can be good and help people. You can be neutral. You can be completely evil and just fuck everyone up. You can nuke entire towns.

I don't know what else I can say about it. Did you watch the Fisto! video? You can become a melee kind of player. You can be a ranged weapons guy. You can be an expert in small arms. You can be a laser guy. You can find an alien weapon from a crashed alien ship out in the wastes. There's so much shit out there.

The Game of the Year edition has all of the add ons. The main ones are Operation Anchorage and Broken Steel. Broken Steel gives you the option to cap out at level 30 instead of level 20, more weapons and harder and new enemies. It also adds more missions after the standard game ends. Can't go wrong.

On the immensity of the game:

http://brutalgamer.com/2010/10/06/fallout-new-vegas-has-some-mindboggling-stats/

QuoteAccording to a blog post sent via PR earlier today, that deals with the creation of the Strategy Guide, there are some serious numbers at work in Fallout: New Vegas.  For instance there are over 200 primary locations in the game.  That figure is fine on it's own until you realise there are about another 200 secondary locations too.

Add to that in excess of 70 side quests and 90 free roam quests and you begin to appreciate the massive size and scope of Obsidian's take on the Fallout 3 universe.

There's a 10 minute video floating around of New Vegas. I really don't want to see it as it's the intro and I find that to be fun to experience for myself. I can't believe people would want to watch the first ten minutes. Doesn't that ruin things just a bit? I'd like to see it first on my TV, not on my computer.

Yea. It's sitting in my car waiting for me to drive home, splooge all over it, and then throw it in the secksbox.

Also, Simmer, I gave you my gamertag a while back, but you didn't send a request. What's your Xbox tag?

I heard it's buggy as hell right now.  As in, many reviewers can't even go an hour without it freezing up.  I'm sure it'll be patched, but I'm going to wait until it is.

Apparently their games suck. I haven't had an issue. And since I've yet to have an issue then the game must be fine

I've been asking friends to submit an objective review about the glitches and bugs they've experienced so far.  There seemed to be a big discrepancy in the initial reports, some saying its bug-free, some saying it is broken to the point of unplayability.  In my own experience (call it about 5 hours, counting afk time), I've had a few minor glitches, but nothing game breaking, and 0 freezes so far.  A mole rat got swallowed by a rock.  A radscorpion melted into railroad tracks.  Doc Mitchell got stuck in a ::climbing stairs:: animation in front of a bunch of shelves.  That's really just about it so far, but I acknowledge that Oblivion and Fallout 3 were among the buggiest games I have ever played.  With New Vegas, so far so good, but with this game engine you never know what lies around the corner.

That said, the game is awesome.  You guys know how awful I am at condensing, so I'll spare you the brick-sized paragraphs and just recommend that you do not walk, but RUN, to your nearest retailer and pick up this game.  Hardcore mode is everything I thought it would be -- and more.  No joke!

Yea, I spoke too soon yesterday about not having issues. As I progressed, it started getting a little buggy just by stuttering a lot (I press me a lot of RB so I know if I have some fucker ahead and that was when a lot of it happened). It's still pretty amazing. Just like the last one. I was wondering about a house earlier (as I used the piss out of mine in Megaton) and found out that in one of the towns (can't remember which, maybe Novac) there is a motel you can rent a room for 100 caps and from what I heard the rent is good forever. I'll be testing it tonight.

And Simmer, I'll add you tonight.

So, last night, I was playing for a bit, fiddling around in New Vegas. I had agreed to do something for the NCR and they told me I was cool with them. I went to some station in New Vegas, hadn't done anything in the building, and all of a sudden the NCR dots all turn red and attack me. I took off towards a casino that hates the NCR in hopes they would save me. They didn't do a thing and while I was trying to kill the NCR, I accidentally shot a robot and about 5 other robots came after me.. FMXboxL. I shut the game off because everytime it would load the previous save, I was stuck in the middle of the firefight. I hadn't created a save it since I started playing so I just cut my losses.

Are you playing on hardcore mode? I think it makes a world of difference, especially with healing. I stepped on a mine near the Powder Ganger's hangout and crippled my legs. Had to head all the way back to Doc Mitchell to get patched up before continuing on.

No. The way I thought I'd do it is do a non-hardcore playthrough first and then do the hardcore second. It may be the pansy way to go but it's my way dammit. When I do Halo, I play through on normal, then legendary

Haven't had any real issues  myself other than Bailey being stuck in the ceiling in the Vikki and Vance Casino when I was questioning him about my assailants. It was more funny than annoying.

Other than that this game is incredible. I'm getting a serious feeling of dread as I'm slowly making my way across the South Central portion of the map to reach Novac. After passing through Nipton which was left in smoldering remains featuring in-progress crucifications, I made my way to the Mojave Outpost to warn them of the Legion's Death Spree and then headed East to Novac. Passed through Hidden Valley which contained four of five bunkers and a few bark scorpion nests. The bark scorpions are easy to kill but when they get you it causes hallucinations. I only managed to check out a couple of bunkers as I figured I'd come back later. I really wanted to get this mission done.

Kept on my way through the valleys and while trying to figure out how to traverse the rocks and brush. Of course when I chose to go right at a fork in the trail I ran smack into a Giant Radscorpion Now With Impenetrable Armor. I decided to dynamite it and myself and start back at my save. Really not sure how the hell I'm going to get past this thing. I'm thinking lure it close and then scurry up a rock and blast away from on high. Anyone got any early game success stories with the big, black Radscorps? I killed one outside of Nipton with dynamite but I'm really not sure how.

Playing on Hardcore makes this game so much better. Knowing you can't just run at anything with your guns blazing because if you cripple a limb you've gotta use your Doctor Bag or see a specialist adds a dimension I only had in Fallout 3 at the early stage when Stimpaks were scarce. I'm sure I'll turn into an Angel of Death at some point but I'll still have to keep hydrated, fed and well slept to stay sharp. Love it.

I can't wait to see what DLC they're going to launch for this.

I avoid the black radscorps. Even in my progressed non-hardcore game. Also, you'll definitely want to hit up that bunkered area. Soon enough, you'll found out why. It's nothing shocking but it's just some place you'll want to be. And getting further evidence of how much of a pussy I am is leading me to start a hardcore game tonight or tomorrow.

I haven't gotten far from the compound. Not far at all. So I'll turn back and check the whole thing out when I resume. I don't have enough to get past hard locked doors yet though so I may be missing out on some stuff.

How well did you fare in the first fight? The one with the Powder Gang? I didn't do all that well and I was on normal non-hardcore. Did you get others to help you in the fight?

Haven't had any real issues  myself other than Bailey being stuck in the ceiling in the Vikki and Vance Casino when I was questioning him about my assailants. It was more funny than annoying.

At the NCRCF? Or somewhere else? I've encountered a bunch of small groups of Powder Gangers and Jackals and conquered them all. The first few times I took on the Jackals at the Nipton Rest Stop I had to consider my approach and paid with my life. But eventually I figured it out and used a combo of dynamite and my Weathered 10mm pistol.

I murdered that guy with ease. I feel like in New Vegas you're much more powerful out of the gate than you were in Fallout 3. I remember feeling helpless in F3 for quite some time.

So, anyway... I've mopped up the Powdergangers in Goodsprings, and headed down to Primm to talk to the shipping agent bloke as directed.  Had a chat with the NCR guys outside the town, and then headed in - and *every* cunt is shooting at me.  Doesn't matter what I'm wearing, what I'm carrying, how I go in - the World and his wife has a pop as soon as they set eyes on me.  It's really, really pissing me off.

Any ideas?

Yes.  Everybody.  i've even tried walking in naked and unarmed, and I still get shot on sight.

That's weird, I did the same as you. Killed Powder Gangers, who are all assholes and should die - and went straight to Primm after Goodsprings. You did all the Goodsprings missions then - even the one with the guy holed up in the gas station?

Yep, even that one.  Then robbed the corpses of the Powder Gangers we'd killed, and walked straight down to Primm.  The cops there don't have a problem with me - I stood around and shot the shit with them for a while - but the minute I set foot inside the town limits, all hell breaks loose.  Sometimes they don't even wait that long - they're shooting at me over the fence.  I'm not nearly powerful enough to take them on, so I'm fucked until I can figure out what I'm doing to offend them so badly.

Well there are like 3-4 bad guys in the town. Just patrolling it. In the casino or whatever it was, they should be cool with you. Basically, you're supposed to restore order to the town. Killing the fuckers walking around outside will do it. Then you need to appoint someone the sheriff or something.

When people are shooting at you, just fucking kill them. There's no reason not to. People will forgive you. If these people are in a gang or are Fiends, fuck their asses up. It might take a few tries but it's worth it. Then, as Yeti said, you will meet everyone in the Vikki and Vance Casino and help them get a new sheriff. How you go about that is up to you. Also, the NCR is camped right outside - try talking to them. I remember now - you definitely have to kill some motherfuckers before getting into Primm. That's the deal.

Buy them because they're the best games to come out in years. They said Fallout 3 is like Oblivion with guns - and it is - but it's also Oblivion without all the faggy medieval magic terms and spells and shit. The story is incredible and immersive. They are definitely comparable and you will probably get the hang of Fallout's gameplay in seconds.

You guys were both right.  Outstanding game.  I'm at Level 15 now.  For some reason, the Head of State mission is bugging up.  Specifically, Hamlin does not arrive at the Memorial.  However, I've read that there might be a way around that.

Bugs are the price you pay for a Bethesda game.

When I finish with this, New Vegas is next.

Be sure to get the expansion packs for Fallout 3. You might be able to buy a disc. If not, just download them. Also, an expansion was released for new Vegas recently

Game of the Year edition has all of them.

Yea, I had an issue with that as well. Can't remember if it was in my second game or not. I believe that if you go at a different time of the day he will show up.

Ok, NCR, Yes Man, the Legion, or Mr. House? With whom do I side?

I think I'm leaning towards NCR right now.  However, I just saw one of their officers shoot a civilian over an insult, so I'm having doubts.

Going with Mr. House sounds kind of appealing.

At least then you won't have Lupus. [/Bork]

I can tell you this - I'm at all out war with the Legion right now and I don't see any way of turning back. I guess I'm aligned with the NCR for now but I don't love 'em. I do like having Boone on my side though and he's an NCR loyalist.

I'm trying to complete as many missions as possible prior to making the final decision about which faction to side with.  When I finish that, I'll probably save and then play through all of the scenarios.

I fully intend, however, to do a complete game being as evil as possible, eventually siding with the Legion.

Side note: the Anti-Materiel Rifle is a beast.  Best. Weapon. Ever.

Fact. However the load time and the amount of AP is absurd to balance it out.

I was trying to do as many side missions as possible. Then I decided to storm Caesar's tent with Boone and at least eight dudes with Power Fists came rushing out of the tent and beat us to pulps. Gonna have to go in a lone, lure them out and find a high place to pick them all off. I might as well just get to it.

Have you cleared out the quarry with the Deathclaws yet?  That was nearly impossible until I figured out that ED-E, Cass, and myself should take up positions at the zenith of the mill.

No, but I did know there was a spot you can avoid them. I haven't actually encountered any Deathclaws yet despite being near level 26.

I think I've only had to deal with one or two. Not many. I actually had more issues with these little flies called Cazadors.. They were a bitch and a half.

So of course I ran into a deathclaw and a young deathclaw while wandering near Bitter Springs today. They killed me.

Cazadores are EVIL.
