Title: Dead Pool 2011: The Race to Beat Huey Again
Post by: J. Walter Weatherman on December 09, 2010, 11:13:03 AM
The most magical time of the year is almost upon us.

If I could have my way, I'd say: same rules as this year (http://www.desipio.com/messageboard/index.php?topic=7112.msg199338#msg199338) and shut your fat gob if you feel otherwise...

a) Rank your picks 1-10 and be awarded points by ranking
b) Add one bonus point for each decade under 90
c) Deduct one penalty point for each person other than yourself who picked the same person
d) Each correct pick would be guaranteed a minimum of 1 point, regardless of deductions
e) 5 point penalty for late picks (picks in after the start of 2011, but before the announcement of everyone else's picks sometime in January)

THUNDERDOME: ON.

(And let the whining begin...)

Also: just like last year, I say we do submissions by email.

Suppose I could have mentioned that as well.

Same creepy email address as last year, PM me if you don't have it.

Reminder: I won't actually be reading your emails until I've put together my own list and the time comes to tally up everyone's entries.

So I won't be responding to emails sent to the dead pool email address... Chuck.

In related news, so far I appear to have lists from TJ and TEC.

What happens if we submit now, and someone on our list carps it before the end of the year?  Are we allowed to put in a substitute pick at no. 11?

Everyone's 11th pick is still Al Yellon.

Between Elizabeth Edwards and Richard Holbrooke, I've had to revise my list twice. So now instead of giving eternal life, I just have to think about someone to make them expire.

Finally, in terms of logistics, we'd have to set up some way of submitting picks that hides them from prying eyes until all the picks are in. I could set up a dedicated email address for submissions, though, and you all could just trust my pinkie swear that I wouldn't peek at them until I've posted my own picks.

5 days to Dead Pool...

I appear to have picks from TJ, TEC, PenFoe and powen. Possibly from Tonker and Chuck as well.

Everyone else, get on it. PM me if you don't have the submission email.

For those unclear on the rules, pick whoever you want, with the scoring as follows:

Quote from: J. Walter Weatherman on December 09, 2010, 11:13:03 AM
a) Rank your picks 1-10 and be awarded points by ranking
b) Add one bonus point for each decade under 90
c) Deduct one penalty point for each person other than yourself who picked the same person
d) Each correct pick would be guaranteed a minimum of 1 point, regardless of deductions
e) 5 point penalty for late picks (picks in after the start of 2011, but before the announcement of everyone else's picks sometime in January)

I do have two emails from Tonker.

If one of those emails contains your DEATH LIST 2011 (rather than some sort of Chuck- or Huey-like daze of confusion (http://www.desipio.com/messageboard/index.php?topic=7626.msg232681#msg232681)) then I indeed have your list.

It's really too bad that there's not some sort of pool in which one could bet on Orion Samuelson suffering explosive decompression in a bizarre small-plane incident, being caught in a love tape with Max Armstrong, or running afoul of a fixed-bolt stunner during a goodwill mission.

Final tally: TJ, TEC, Chuck, Tonker, PenFoe, powen, RV, TDubbs, SKO, Wheezer, CT, Fork, Gil, Huey, Shooter, Yeti, Big Drinky, Apex, Butthead and Slak.

I have yet to look at the picks themselves and probably won't get to this all until at least tomorrow. In the meantime... Side bets anyone?

Who's this year's favorite pick?

How many Desipiots made other Desipiots' lists?

How many made their own?

How many self-deprecating U-18 picks did Self-Deprecating Yeti™ make?

How many Wheezer picks has anyone even heard of before?

Where was Oleg when he thought "Oh, shit, I forgot to send in my Dead Pool picks" this year?

How many 11th hour revisions were there in the wake of Harmon Killebrew's announcement on Thursday?

(I'll confess that I have a pretty good idea about the answer to that last one.)

I'm going with "falling off a wagon down a mountain."

Suck it.

e) 5 point penalty for late picks (picks in after the start of 2011, but before the announcement of everyone else's picks sometime in January)

Hat's off to Killer for looking out for us Dead Poolers.

It's a good thing I can read, therefore, I knew this fact before submitting my picks.

I guess it was pretty impertinent of me to tell you to "suck it," then.

You can imagine how foolish I must feel.

I'm working on compiling picks and the unveiling is imminent. Oleg-come-latelies should get their picks in ASAP (prepared to endure the 5-point Suck It penalty, natch).

In the meantime, I'm missing some or all date-of-birth info for the following:

Betty Loren-Maltese
Maggie Daley
Mary Gertrude Enig
Sam Adam Sr.
Tom Roeser

For Maggie Daley, I'm coming up with 1943 (http://www.equipforequality.org/support/2005bios.php). If I find nothing else, I'll set her DOB to 1/1/43, but it would be nice to confirm this.

For Loren-Maltese, there are a number of spammy sites with identical verbiage ("born c. 1949 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana"), but little by way of sourcing or specifics.

Mary Gertrude Enig is a tricky one: internets say 1931 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_G._Enig), which would have her jumping age brackets on her birthday this year, with an obvious impact points-wise.

I've got nothing at all at the moment on either Sam Adam Sr. or Tom Roeser.

Little help?

Okay... The Federal Inmate Locator (http://www.bop.gov/iloc2/InmateFinderServlet?Transaction=IDSearch&IDType=IRN&IDNumber=13706-424) puts Betty Loren-Maltese's age (presumably upon release in early 2010) at 61, which matches up with the "circa 1949" above.

If she dies this year, she'll be in her 60's, which is all that matters for purposes of scoring.

But the dead pool completist in me wants specifics, dammit!

Maybe one of the lawyers here has access to the Illinois Bar Association member directory that provides birth dates?

I don't think you're gonna find very many good lawyers hanging around a place as rife with lawsuit dangers as Desipio, Pen.

Sam Adam was 74 as of June 1, 2010, according to this Tribune article. (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/blagojevich/ct-met-blagojevich-defense-team-20100601,0,1135892.story)

QuoteSam Adam Sr., 74, is a legend at "26th and Cal," where he has earned a reputation over decades as a crafty veteran of the Cook County criminal-defense bar. He is perhaps best known for his fiery, though ultimately futile, defense of former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds on sex charges.

But it is Adam's 37-year-old son who is expected to do most of the talking for Blagojevich in court. The younger Adam came into his own as a courtroom presence in the 2008 Cook County trial of R&B superstar R. Kelly, who was acquitted of child pornography charges.
