So, I was looking to see whether the May 20 Supernatural finale, which is preempted by the Cubs on WGN, would have an alternate channel. I'm rather stunned by the Comcast lineup in the channel-800 range. I mean, sure, "All Girl Out of Control Sex Orgy," "Girl on Girl Uncensored Orgy Fest," "Horny Nude Czech MILFs on the Loose"... but, "Not Really The Dukes of Hazzard"? One might as well just go ahead and make a movie called "Straining Credulity."

Football highlights during MNF halftime?  Hell to the no.  We here at ESPN have a basketball game featuring one of our favorite teams to promote the shit out of.

Does the director of every Cubs telecast get a bonus for showing Crane Kenney in the crowd?

When we were in Chicago a couple of weeks ago we saw the WGN morning news show at our hotel.  I couldn't believe how funny it was.  They were interviewing David Koechner (Anchorman) in character.  He was funny, and all of the staff played along, even the rather overweight female anchor when she agreed to go back to his dressing room with him conceding that "It had been a long time."  But the funniest bit turned out to be a female reporter who was presenting some Chinese acrobats, including a guy who was juggling several balls.  She teased the male anchors by asking them if they could juggle their balls as well as this guy.  She yelled out to them "Come on.  Grab your balls!  Let's see what you can do!"  Unfortunately although we get the national version of WGN, we only see the rather staid evening news, not the morning news show.

Unwatchable because you don't get the channel? Hmm... I swee what you did there. There are ways though, Stew. May not be worth your while but there are ways.

I got home early today and turned on Ch. 7 and was greeted by Janet Davies in her clown makeup and some sort of sky blue patent leather mumu.

I am now searching the house for knitting needles with which to gouge out my eyes.

You know, in the past, um, 20 or 30 years, we've seen a lot of news stars come and go. But there was one woman, one woman who stayed on top right from the very beginning and I guess that's why they called her ... the King. And of course I'm speaking about ... Mrs. Janet Davies. I was home watching television the other afternoon and I happened to catch Janet Davies in her clown makeup and some sort of sky blue patent leather mumu.  I was watching this and a funny thought occurred to me. I thought, what if someone took steel needles, say, mm, fifteen, eighteen inches long and plunged them, plunged them into my eyes. What would the reaction be? We can only guess ... but I think it might go something like this...

[turns his back to the internet, pulls up shirt collar over his neck, removes eyeglasses and pockets them, then spins quickly, his right hand clutched to his eyes, screaming, shrieking at the top of his lungs. He staggers, collapses to the floor, tries to get up. Falls off stage and rolls into audience.]

Fireable? No.

But cliched, tacky and unfunny? Yes.

The U's "HD" feed just means a 3 digit number as opposed to channel 6.

It looks like it was shot with a camera made from a potaoto.

I watched about 5 minutes of Hawk & Stone before I rememberized the U was an option. Those two smug fuckpuddles were, impossibly, even worse than I recalled. In the span of that 5 minutes they literally SCOFFED at the notion that the Cubs were trying to teach some plate discipline/pitch recognition to Castro. Stone then listed Castro's hits by year as a big leaguer as if he were making some profound and subtle point about what good that nerd-learnin had done for Starlin. Finally, Hawk ACTUALLY SAID (paraphrasing here) the Cubs should know better than to try to teach patience to a Latin player.

Those Latins are like wild animals, I tells ya!

When this generation of mindless baseball cretins dies off, who's going to replace them so we still have something to bitch about?

Did anyone switch back during the five-run inning to hear how silent Hawk must have been?

You can't hear silence, man.

I can, because I'm not a penniless hippie.

This could probably go in Unlistenable and Unreadable as well, but what's important is fuck Jim Belushi and ESPN.

Wrigley Field tradition of singing classic Take Me Out to the Ball Game inspires a feature narrated by actor Jim Belushi (http://frontrow.espn.go.com/2013/07/wrigley-field-tradition-of-singing-classic-take-me-out-to-the-ball-game-inspires-a-sportscenter-feature-narrated-by-actor-jim-belushi/)

"I asked Jim if he was interested in serving as the voice of the piece, rather than being interviewed for it, and he was in.

Fuck this so hard.

Don't the Astros know that prospects don't work out?  They're going about this all wrong.  TIME IS RUNNING OUT.  If they'd just sign Jeremy Hermida, Mark DeRosa, Kerry Wood (he's a Texan!) and Robinson Cano those ratings would skyrocket.

So, the Cubs are collecting radio money from CBS, cable TV money from NBC, national TV money from FOX, and local TV money from ABC (http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/breaking/ct-cubs-tv-1212-biz-20141211-story.html).

Seeing that they want to play another 40-something games on local airwaves, let's imagine 20 games on CW (WGN) and 20 more on Weigel Broadcasting (WCIU), and the Cubs will be available on one of 9 stations any given day:

CSN
CSN+
WLS
WGN
WFLD
WCIU
TBS
ESPN
ESPN2

I've seen Deshaies get bashed a couple times of late (not on here, just on internet comment sections in general).

I like him, though. He can break down the game, but he's also got a really quick and dry sense of humor that works great with Len.

There've been lots of examples of it that I can't remember because I'm not Huey, but, just today:

QuoteLen: Happen to receive Popular Mechanics?

JD: Uh, I do not.

Len: Kluber was on the cover of the April issue this year.

JD: Pitching magazine, huh?

Wow. (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/wgn-yom-kippur-nazi-badge)

On a slightly smaller point, who wishes anybody a happy Yom Kippur?

This evening, my gentile family enjoyed the Jewish cuisine at Max's in Highland Park, where a message board had a festive drawing of a dancing bagel with "Yom Kippur is in the Air!"

I, too, found it a little odd, but it's not my place to question.

I could never figure out why people show up at synagogue on Yom Kippur dressed in their Sunday best (that's my feeble attempt at irony) as though it was a festive occasion.  I also think that it is ironic that synagogues set out a "break the Yom Kippur fast" table where one of the featured delicacies is pickled herring.  My grandparents thought of pickled herring as what it started out to be, working class food that was intended to sustain you until you had enough rubles to by something decent.

A shot of vodka with a pickled herring chaser is amazing.

I'd say they're way more bandwagonish than Cub fans, seeing as how nobody gave a shit until 2 months ago. I've seen a fair number of games at Rogers Centre, and I tend to dislike the experience. They have a lot of between-innings distractions (dance crews, t-shirt guns, etc.) and they feel the need to tell Jays fans when to cheer. The ballpark is also generally a lot quieter than Wrigley, which I suppose could be an effect of the accoustics, but it generally seems morgue like to me.

At the same time, the 7th inning of tonight's game was outrageous. Martin's throw that bounced off a bat is very Old School Cub-like, while the fact that they so brutally reclaimed the lead is certainly more New Cubs.

All that said, the ridiculous level of Texas Butt-Hurt that followed Bautista's homerun leads me to think that the right team won. The Rangers looked petty, even if they felt Bautista showed them up by admiring his homerun.

The game I was at in May left me enjoying the dance crew a lot. The dance was decidedly stripper-like.

I loved the bat flip. Just thought the trash-throwing and whatever the hell they did to the Rangers dugout was a bit much - even if the Rangers are a bunch of whiny bitches.

I was done in the second inning last night. Turned it back on for the 9th because I wanted to see one of my favorites maybe come to bat one last time.

Coghlan, Montero, Fowler... with Soler (3-4) waiting on deck when Dexter got hosed on a barely borderline 3-2 pitch.

The TBS strike zone was an abomination. Ernie Johnson, one of my favorite broadcasters ever, due to his NBA on TNT work had me ready to punch my TV several times. I never fucking liked Ron Darling and nothing changed there. Cal Ripken is a useless shite, whose roid-induced record* for games played is about as interesting as his stupid observations during broadcasts. His giant head is now obscured by his bloated husk so we'll never see what he did to himself in the 90s.

McFaddens. I hope they get termites.

How unwatchable is such a series? I forgot they played each other in the 2006 NLCS and that the Mets took the Cardinals seven games. And that Steve Trachsel actually started a game for the Mets in that NLCS.

I usually pay no attention to the color commentator.  Talking to the TV is a sign of a failing mind.   But last night I found myself repeatedly telling Costas to shut up.  "Gee whiz Mr. Costas.  I have forgotten in the last 2 minutes.  How long ago was it that the Cubs won the World Series?"

Using my MLB.tv subscription, I muted the game and used the audio commentary from the Score. I had to sync it a few times, but it worked splendidly. No regrets.

I think you can stream the game on mlb.tv and they have the radio call synced up for you. I took advantage of that during some dark moments of last year's NLCS.

Why does Fox insist on taking such a massive shit on the World Series every year?  They have an entire season's worth of overwrought packages and lame cliches packed into a single pregame show.  Just broadcast the damn baseball game without zooming in on Jason Kipnis's nostrils every five seconds, please.

Lindor is a borderline superstar and not a random middle reliever, so there's something.

Yea, but remember we love to assume the media and/or announcers hate us. And then Adrian Gonzalez is vilified for saying "Us against the world", when thats the mentality of assuming the media sucks the other team's dick

It makes me feel better about funning on Sadrian (You're welcome, Huey) for that comment when I'm not acting like the mass media hates my team because they sometimes show other teams on camera.

I've been annoyed with the talking points in these playoffs, and I've focused some of that on Buck, but it really probably isn't his fault. I'm sure the studio notes before every game highlight LESTER YIPS, CURSES, BARTMAN, ETC repeatedly. His play by play has been good, his call of the last out of the NLCS was perfect.

As for them liking players from other teams too much or whatever I think bitching about BROADCASTER BUYAS is the only thing dumber than UMPIRE BUYAS. His job is to hype up the series. Cubs fans thought he wanted to tongue bathe Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers fans were fuming at his love affair with Baez.

My camera comment had nothing to do with any of that -- it was more about Fox's infatuation with running STORYLINES OF POSTSEASON PASHUN into the extremely zoomed-in ground. Law and Lindor are both sufficiently fired up to warrant 24/7 camera coverage. Anyway, back to whatever we're going on about.

Giving TBS credit where credit is due.
Watching the pre-game with Rollins and Sheffield in the studio demonstrating and explaining how they see pitches with Pedro throwing was pretty cool.

So while I was setting up the DVR on WGN for this afternoons Hawks matinee game I came across what was currently being broadcast.
Apparently Channel 9 discovered a bunch of the "Bozo's Circus" episodes from the 1960's and have digitally remastered them.
So they are replaying them as an hour long special.

They shouldn't have, God it's horrific.
The stuff we we used to watch while eating lunch was not exactly formative.

Even getting tickets was some Hunger Games shit. People ordered tickets the day their child (or grandchild) was born, and the classified ads were full of people looking for Bozo tickets. I'm guessing that was quite the cottage industry.

I actually went to one of the shows. Some very long time friends of my parents were the Chicago distributors for 7-Up (could this conversation be any more 60's?) and they had connections. I was friends with their son and they invited me. I was 6 or possibly 7 which makes it 1965 or 1966. I remember bits and pieces of it. The stands are just bleachers and they herd you around in order to get everything in place because it was broadcast live. Most of the black kids were sitting towards the back. I remember being severely disappointed because i wasn't picked for the grand prize game. I think all the cast members were drinking and although I wouldn't have recognized it at the time I'm sure everyone smelled like cigarettes because everyone smelled like cigarettes back then. I wanted to meet Bozo and that didn't happen so now I just light devotional candles to Bob Bell.

This is a great post; I'm hanging a star on it.

I had a friend who got to go and it was only because his aunt had put in a request for her kids several years earlier but by the time her number came up her kids were all grown so my friend and his sister were the beneficiaries.  His sister got selected for Bozos buckets and apparently shit the tub on bucket #4.  She was to receive a "years supply" of Bozo hot dogs  that in reality turned out to be like 5 packs.

Also, I never really cared for Bozo and wished more people yelled "Cookie" when they were asked "Who's your favorite clown?" and was very satisfied on the two occassions when I was watching and they engineered it for that to happen and punk Bozo's ass.

Also, if you want to go way back, a couple years ago my dad attended my daughter's school for "Grandparents Day".  One of the events they had was when the grandchild would "interview" their grandparent.  I read the answers when my daughter got home that day  and it was unsurprising stuff for a guy born in 1933 (Favorite President--Harry Truman etc.), but I was curious about my dad's answer to what TV show he watched.  His answer was something called  Super Circus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Circus) which appears to have been an ancestral predecessor to Bozo (indeed, check out the low-rent Bozo at the beginning of   this clip.) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEoqn0sfoeI)  I was delighted but also somewhat horrified to discover this--I mean...being born at the nadir of the Great Depression was bad enough but having this as your entertainment?

So now you know the rest of the story.

I don't know how we all didn't get seizures from the camera swinging around looking for Grand Prize Game contestants.

It's how they weened the weak out of society. Only the strongest failed to seize and die. You weren't just a fan of Bozo, you were a survivor.

Super Circus aired from 1949 to 1956, so your 16-year-old Dad was tuning in to this?

Huey should probably answer this but you do realize that there wasn't a whole lot on television in 1949?

Pretty much this. In fact, as my daughter was in 4th grade during this particular visit, the question was asked "What TV shows did you watch as a 4th grader?" to which my dad responded that they "didn't have television" when he was in 4th grade (he was certainly the only grandparent in the room whose birth pre-dated widespread television programming). Pressed to name one, he came up with Super Circus. There's a good chance he came across it when his younger brother (by 7 years) was watching it, but apparently one of the show's stars,  Mary Hartline (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Hartline), who was considered one of television's earliest sex symbols, was an attraction. We can maybe wait for Stew to confirm, depending on whether or not this show reached California, but Hartline's Wiki entry describes her looks and figure as making her "a national star and a sex symbol for thousands of boys, young and old"

In any event, as flannj suggests, there was such a scarcity of television programming that this was probably one of the only shows he could think of.  I'm guessing he was probably trying to come up with a show that would equate to what 4th graders were watching around his time.  In short, rather than come off as true dinosaur in front of his granddaughter, he used Super Circus as a proxy. I mean, it's possible he rushed home off the Ravenswood El (today's Brown Line) after a day of attending school at Quigley Prep to catch it but, more likely, it was simply the earliest show he could think of that would equate to "children's programming", even if he was 15 (he was born in late August) when it first aired.

I have a recollection of Super Circus, but I don't remember whether I saw it before or after my family moved from Chicago to San Francisco.  I definitely remember Mary Hartline.  She was a diversion from the guy with the top hat, red cutaway coat and white riding pants.  He had a whip, but even as a randy 13 year old I didn't connect that with any kinky activity.

I went as well; I'm trying to reconstruct how we got there (train? bus?), but it wasn't that small of a group. Wizzo scared the living shit out of me in general.
