Title: Tony LaRussa Appreciation Thread
Post by: Slaky on October 24, 2011, 10:53:47 PM
Thanks Tony! Without you we might be one game away from another St. Louis championship.

How do you feel about that game tonight, Tony?

Let's make a list.

1. Brought in Lynn to intentionally walk a batter, then took him out.
2. Tried to hit and run with Albert Pujols at the plate and Allen Craig at first, several times, trailing by two, in the ninth inning, before the inevitable strike-'em-out-throw-'em-out finally happened.

3. Blamed his bullpen coach for No. 1. Said he wanted to bring in Motte but his bullpen coach misunderstood him because the crowd was so loud and got Lynn up instead and you can't see the bullpen from the dugout so he didn't know Lynn was warming up until he walked out of the bullpen. Seriously.

Fucking dick.

Nobody's buying the shit the Genius is selling (http://www.stltoday.com/sports/columns/jeff-gordon/article_eb3bce84-ff0d-11e0-bc2f-001a4bcf6878.html).

Everyone goes under the bus, including those who don't fit:

Quote

This is what La Russa and the Cardinals want you to believe: First, that the Cardinals twice had the wrong pitcher in the game in the decisive eighth inning, and that it happened because the crowd at Rangers Ballpark was so loud that bullpen coach Derek Lilliquist couldn't hear La Russa correctly on the bullpen phone -- twice. Second, that when Allen Craig was thrown out trying to steal in the seventh inning, setting up Rangers manager Ron Washington's third consecutive intentional walk of Albert Pujols, Craig was running because Pujols himself had put on a hit-and-run play, then didn't swing at Alexi Ogando's pitch because it was too far off the plate."

We were season ticket holders in Oakland during the GENIUS era.  I grew to hate the Genius for coming out of the duggout three or four times in the same inning for a pitching change in a game with a 5 run difference.  I wish I were exaggerating.  I was grateful for the designated hitter rule because the double switch was one less area where I had to endure his brilliance.

Pujols is raising more red flags than you'd see at a Warsaw Pact meeting. First, he botches the cutoff throw, costing Game 2, causing him to flee the reporters. After his Sosa-esque 3 HR performance in Game 3, he was a big zero in Game 4. Yesterday, he nearly ran through a stop sign and called at least 1, if not 2 hit and runs.

The fact that the Genius said that his bullpen coach made the same mistake twice is awesome.

The fact that the Genius said that the first mistake came when he asked for Jason Motte, but instead the bullpen coach warmed up Marc Rzepczynski is so much better.

...because "Motte" and "Rzepczynski" are amazingly similar sounding. I could see how that would happen.

Yay?

The way I see it, LaRussa leaving means Dave Duncan takes his bag of HGH and goes home. His wife is supposedly very ill. He might use a year off, or something. Pujols might be less likely to return but that's a crap shoot.

If that World Series meant the Cardinals are about to hit the skids for the forseeable future I'm ok with it.

And if Duncan's wife is dying, can't he just shoot her up with some of his meds?

That was definitely the PPX. I am the purveyor of the Viking Dongpacalypse thread meaning I'm usually pretty good at these things. Although to be fair to me, I never said this thread was about trying to stop St. Louis from winning the series. I just wanted to make sure that gif of LaRussa lived on.

It's dusty level shit. If your pitcher is ok, but not lights out, you never take him out to pinch hit for him, doesn't matter if anyone is in scoring position in a close game, because you can get 1-2 more mediocre innings out of him. When a pitcher comes up to bat, he must bunt. Doesn't matter the circumstance, who's on base, etc. If you have one of the best closers in baseball and he struggles the game before, you bench him when you have a 2 run lead with the bottom of the order coming up (and the pitcher has to hit in the 3rd spot, since larussa used his entire bench). Instead, you bring in Darren Oliver, who hasn't closed this year. Also, since the cardinals offense is a real juggernaut, you must intentionally walk anyone and everyone. Texas intentionally walked 21 batters all year, I think he intentionally walked 10 cardinals in the world series.

Exciting to watch, that's my takeaway.  I used to say that I'd like a 1-0 pitchers duel, but unless a Cubs pitcher is striking out 20 or has a no-no, fuck that. I like my baseball games with HRs, errors, and managing mistakes (as long as its not the cubs making the errors and mistakes).

Thanks, Tony and Ron for being ruhtarded that game. And David, Fuck you.

Tony LaRussa is going Moneyball, literally:

QuoteDiamondbacks chief baseball officer Tony La Russa says he has hired Ed Lewis to take charge of the team’s analytical department, Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal reports on Twitter. Lewis is an old friend of La Russa’s who does stock market analytical work, the head D’backs baseball man tells Costa.

Still rooting for the supposed Genius to fail spectacularly.  Hiring his buddies sounds like a good start.

How's Tony's first big acquisition (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/a/25933) as Head Genius in Charge going?

QuoteYasmany Tomas, 3B/OF, Arizona Diamondbacks
On the positive side, Tomas is capable of putting a charge in the baseball. I have big doubts as to whether he will be able to do that consistently. I saw Tomas play over three days and got a tremendous amount of at-bats since they had him batting third every inning of the minor-league games. Even with that many looks I only saw him hit one ball with any authority and I did not see him even come close to pulling a ball. He was late on everything—including some out and up, meatball, mid-80s "heaters" from low-minors pitchers. Tomas swung aggressively and early in the count, too. His idea of the strike zone and ability to identify secondary pitches is going to be a big issue. His physique was concerning, especially for a player purportedly capable of playing third base. Tomas doesn't move well at the hot corner and his arm was inaccurate coming from a slow release. I really don't think Tomas can handle third, and I think he might be more first baseman than left fielder with his noticeable lack of footspeed. Evaluators I talked to were overwhelmingly negative about Tomas and his profile. The player I saw does not have a role to play on a big-league club this year and I'm not sure where he fits in the future. I do have to wonder if he's having trouble adjusting to baseball and life in this country and that's negatively affecting him.
