Title: The Travis "gives me" Wood bollockyoghurt chapchutney thread
Post by: Tonker on July 02, 2012, 02:33:58 AM
Since 1st June he's given up 29 hits, 12 walks and eight runs in 39 1/3 innings for an ERA of 1.83 and a WHIP of 1.04.  His season ERA and WHIP now stand at 3.05 and 1.09 respectively.

Last night he gave up three hits and no walks over 7 2/3 innings, doubled, took third on the subsequent ground-out, and scored the winning run on RIZZO's single.

For the season has an OPS with the bat of .866, small sample size be damned.

I can't see anything getting between him and the NL MVP, to be honest.  Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you my newest squeeze (Reed who?) - Travis Wood.

This morning I received a spam message from Travis Wood having something to do with preferred seating on American Airlines.  You have to hand it to the wiliness of spammers.  Not only do they know that I am a Cub fan, they know who the latest heroes are.

Bump for his second consecutive outdueling of  the Great Johan  (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2012_07_06_chnmlb_nynmlb_1&mode=gameday&c_id=chc) which, though not as strong as his 2 (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2012_07_01_houmlb_chnmlb_1) previous outings (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2012_06_25_nynmlb_chnmlb_1), still leaves him with the following line over his last 5 starts:

36 1/3 IP
25 Hits
14 Walks
21 K
6 ER
1.49 ERA
1.07 WHIP
4-0 W/L

Am I the only one who expected "outings" to link to Anderson Cooper? That would have been of quality.

Kind of reminds me of the stat line of another Cubs lefty from a few years back...

In 76.2 innings pitched, he gave up 54 hits, walked 21, and struck out 78 while surrendering 22 earned runs en route to a 9-4 record. That's an ERA of 2.52 and a WHIP of 0.85.

Could Travis Wood be the next... Rich Hill (http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/gamelog/_/id/6321/year/2006/rich-hill)?

Kind of reminds me of the stat line of another Cubs lefty from a few years back...

In 76.2 innings pitched, he gave up 54 hits, walked 21, and struck out 78 while surrendering 22 earned runs en route to a 9-4 record. That's an ERA of 2.52 and a WHIP of 0.85.

Could Travis Wood be the next... Rich Hill (http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/gamelog/_/id/6321/year/2006/rich-hill)?

I'll wait until I see how Mitch Mavis Wood does.

C'mon, Fork. Use the format.

Mavis Wood taught me typing.

Now THAT'S the Fork know and tolerate!

Fucking BUMP.

GS: 11
IP: 72
H: 49
BB: 24
WHIP: 1.01 (!)
K: 50
HR: 5
Opp AVG: .191 (!)
Opp OBP: .264
Opp SLG: .291 (!!)
ERA 2.75

Batting line: .292/.320/.583/.903

Yes, his BABIP (.211) is low, but at this stage, Travis Wood is as good as if not better than Carlos at the same age, and without the histrionics and meltdowns.  I'm not going to lie, I'm enjoying the hell out of his performances - both on the mound, and at the plate - right now.  I don't really see any reason why he can't continue to perform at close to this level either, and if he does, he'll be in danger of becoming my favourite Wood ever.

Okay, okay.  Kerry was the very first Cub I fell in love with, and nobody will ever replace him in my affections.  But it could get close.

P.S.  Sean Marshall is back on the DL with his knackered shoulder.  Oops.

Cautiously optimistic maybe "oh we totally know what his problem was and we've fixed" talk from the offseason wasn't bullshit.
He's throwing a lot of strikes, so that's something.

He was a totally different guy last night but he's always done well against his former club for whatever reason. Let's see it against another team and we'll start the real party. I think this has potential to make up for the totally wasted Lester/Ross signing(s), save the season and serve as a lesson to the human centipede of wrong that wants to trade 25-year-old all-stars at precious positions for starting pitchers that LITERALLY grow on trees.

I actually thought he looked pretty good most of the way against Colorado, too. He was cruising along and then a couple hits went where they wasn't and the Rockies managed to put up three runs. His stuf and his control has been good and that seemed like one of the biggest issues last year.

After an inning like that you need to go at least 6 to make amends.  He couldn't even do that.

What's weird is it seams to me like the Cubs starters have been a bunch of slapdicks when it comes to going deep into games, but as a rotation they're above average in innings pitched per start (just a shade below 6). There are only 6 teams that are averaging more than 6 IP per start. I guess we're just in the era of the gutless starting pitcher.

I feel like Arrieta is the only guy who can even get into the 7th with any regularity right now.

Hopefully Jacob Turner can come back soon and fix all this.

I think Maddon's had everyone on a 100 pitch max, at least that's how it's been looking to me with pitchers getting the hook. Someone with time to look up pitch counts per game per pitcher can tell me if I'm imagining things.

100 pitch max, he's also pulled guys the second they show signs of struggling the 3rd time through the order, whether that's the 5th/6th/7th inning. I know a bunch of studies have been done that say that's when you should pull guys because even mediocre relievers have a better chance of getting dudes out at that point, it just has bit him in the ass every single time this year. They have to be due for some better luck eventually.

Mediocre relievers sure, but I feel like it was Schlitter every time he pulled someone early. And he's not mediocre. If pulling pitchers early is the smart move, then I'm all for it. I'll be more all for it when the relievers are Grimm and Ramirez.

My bollockyoghurt chapchutney levels are at record lows.

Yeah fuck this Dewey Crowe Gang lookin' piece of fuck

Thirded.  I don't feel I'm as angry as a lot of Cub fans out there right now but I'm definitely annoyed at this fucking guy's performance.  Come on.

I thought he manned up after that terrible first inning. But come on is right.

A lot of this.

I feel like Arrieta is the only guy who can even get into the 7th with any regularity right now.

Hopefully Jacob Turner can come back soon and fix all this.

Lester seems like he's picking it up. He went 7 the last two times out, no?

Honestly I really can't fault Joe for how he handled that bullpen last night. He even used Strop an inning earlier than his usual 8th inning because that was the heart of the order coming up and was likely the highest leverage situation left in the game. Strop just shit the bed. Strop was due to shit the bed at some point, he'd been almost too good for too long, for it to be back-to-back pants shittings is just a killer, but there's no way to really blame Joe for last night at all.

Oops.

We're probably going to see Wada soon, right? I checked out his AAA numbers for the season and they're not as bad as I thought. Wood has just been dreadful...almost Edwin Jackson levels of hittable.

Wada got bumped back a day to start for Iowa today, which puts him in place to take Wood's spot on normal rest. I think today was Wood's last rodeo.

Not bump-worthy IMO. Had he gone 5 innings and bridged the Cubs directly to the 8th himself yeah.  I mean, good effort and all, but after the last 8 or so months of tub- shitting  giving his team 3 1/3 IP is the least he can do.

Unless he does this in a playoff game of course.

Missed my opportunity there.

When Wood came into the game in the 3rd, I literally said to the folks in my section last night, "Boy it'd be nice if Wood could throw 5 innings and take them to the 8th"

And then he induced a double play.

And then he walked 2 straight guys.

But yeah he managed to traverse through a Dodger lineup to get 10 outs so don't let me stand in the way of his winning the gold medal in SKO's Low Bar Olympics.  Cheer the raggedy-ass rail-splitter all you want.

Why does it matter if he got them to the 8th? Do you really want Travis Wood throwing in the 8th inning vs that lineup? He and James Russell combined with Wada to form a voltron of mediocre lefties that got them into the 7th so they could use their pen normally from there on out. Would you have expected Wada to get them to the 8th?

Hell, Wada left in the 3rd and they didn't even need to use Grimm at all in that game. Their pen is hardly taxed, and there's a good chance Wood allowed them to avoid having do to that awful thing they do where they call up Schlitter because their pen is too tired.

I deemed it worthy of a modest congratulatory bump.

What I find most amusing in all this is that Huey seems to think that bumping a thread on a message board is on par with winning the Cy Young award.

I do?

This thread is still dumber than shit but Travis did a fine job saving their asses tonight.

This is world class Huebiting.

It actually made my morning just to come and see this response. I assume Huey was so incensed he spit out his morning optoat (then quickly gathered the chunks back up and stuck them back in because he ain't made of money, dammit).

Hey you do what you got to do with your Morning Hard-On; not judging.

Refusing to call morning wood "morning wood" just to spite Travis Wood?

That sure is our Huey! [Roll Laugh Track]

Heck, I even tried to stave off the Huebiting by admitting that having a Travis Wood thread at all (thanks to some trigger happy Australian) was dumb, but even that qualifier wasn't enough.

What I find amusing (but not most amusing since I'm not a boring ole' biddy like CT) is that CT equates 5 innings of relief work with being worthy of a Cy Young award.

Back-to-back outings holding down the Cardinals while his team scraps their way back to take the lead?

Now *that's* bump-worthy.

Attaboy, Travis.  Way to be. Go have some fresh squirrel to celebrate, hilljack--you deserve it.

Fresh? Might as well get store bought.
Several day old squirrel has a much more "complex" taste.

I know, I went to school in southern Ohio.
