Title: NFL 2013 Thread
Post by: SKO on September 08, 2013, 10:40:26 PM
Started just so I have an excuse to post this wonderful GIF of Eli after his final derp of the night:

Can't somebody give me some frickin' receivers with eyes in the back of their heads?

Seriously, Dave Chapelle got himself a good seat to the game.

On the bright side, it made me notice that gleeful big-clapping Cowboys fan in the background.  I was so focused on Eli's derp that I missed him.  Thanks, Fork?

Is it wrong to wish for a roof collapse at Ford Field right about now?

Yes, but the idea itself is plausible.

I have a question, is there ANYBODY outside of local media shirtstirrers and the meatiest of meatballs fans who think the Bears AREN'T going to re-sign Cutler this year?

I'm pretty sure that Trestman's actions in the Detroit game tell me all I need to know about how he feels about Cutler vs. McCown.  And if Alshon Jeffrey(ies) hangs on to two TD passes, the hordes are exalting Cutler's GAMERISHNESS and LITERSHIP this week instead of calling him selfish for...not taking himself out of the game?

Fuck all that.  During the preaseason, all these same dopes were bitching about the Bears having a terrible backup QB in McCown instead of drafting somebody in 4th round to be the heir apparent.

In conclusion, I hate all Bears fans except for you guys.

If Bears fans and local media shit-stirrers ran the Patriots and Packers, by their logic the starting QBs for those two teams would be Matt Cassel and Matt Flynn. Why overpay some actually talented QB when you can hide a career backup in a pretty good offense?

First-place Chicago Bears!  What do you think, guys?  Clean sweep?

CHICAGO
12/22 at Philadelphia (8 - 6) (beat Detroit 34-20)
12/29 vs Green Bay (7 - 6 - 1) (beat Detroit 22-9, lost to Detroit 40-10)

DETROIT
12/22 vs New York Giants (5 - 9) (lost to Chicago 27-21)
12/29 at Minnesota (4 - 9 - 1) (lost to Chicago 31-30, beat Chicago 23-20 OT)

I'm excited to see Jim Schwartz get fired. I really hope they fuck up the next hire because Schwartz, while disappointing to Lions fans, is still the best thing they've had since the disappointing Wayne Fontes.

Seems like disappointing is the ceiling for the Lions. Can't say I give a fuck.

I wish there was some way they could still get a Wild Card, save his phony baloney jorb and get their ugly asses to Soldier Field for the first round. His firing could be the worst thing that happens to the Bears. But then I thought that the Rod Marinelli hiring was bad news. Mariucci as well. Sooner or later they have to get one right don't they? Don't they?

Do they?  Has the Lions front office turned over?  From what I recall, after Millen was fired, his lieutenants were basically left in place to run the team and perpetuate the Millen Brand.  Has this changed?

I am proud to say that the day Matt Millen was hired I was actively excited that the Lions were, in my mind, rendered moot for the next half-decade.  Those 5 + years only validated my hubris.  I didn't know much about Schwartz when he was hired but Slaky's right--this is the closest they've come to not sucking since Fontes.  Good times.

Let us not forget the roles that the great Paul Edinger and RW McQuarters played in ushering in the Millen Era by defeating the Lions on the last day of the 2000 season to keep them out of the playoffs.

They will need to. Green Bay could squeeze in at 9-6-1 over a 9-7 Bears and 9-7 Lions.

This is exactly what happened. Mayhew was promoted from interim GM to full time GM because he swindled the Cowboys out of some picks in exchange for Roy E. Williams. Then thanks to him admittedly doing better than Millen at "not fucking up the #1 and #2 overall picks in consecutive years" the Lions got Stafford to play catch with Megatron and Suh to serve as the bedrock of an aggressively shitty defense and so there was a core just good enough to make Mayhew look like he knew what he was doing.

This is exactly what happened. Mayhew was promoted from interim GM to full time GM because he swindled the Cowboys out of some picks in exchange for Roy E. Williams. Then thanks to him admittedly doing better than Millen at "not fucking up the #1 and #2 overall picks in consecutive years" the Lions got Stafford to play catch with Megatron and Suh to serve as the bedrock of an aggressively shitty defense and so there was a core just good enough to make Mayhew look like he knew what he was doing.

Any speculation that Mayhew could be gone along with Schwartz?

Suck it Detroit.

Outstanding.

Also: wow.  I fully expected that the Bears would have their arses handed to them by the Eagles, but I also fully expected it to be the end of the Bears season.  We think we have problems but at least we're not Detroit fans.

Anyway, I don't want the Bears to lose to Gr**n B*y next week (and indeed, don't think they will) but I'll be able to live with it if it happens.  I can't see the playoffs being anything but carnage, and whoever gets through is going to get really, really embarrassed by somebody.  I hate myself for saying it, but I'd almost rather that was the P*ckers.

Not only is this site amazing, but also informative. For instance, I didn't know TDubbs played for Denver.

Taking a break from Cutler real quick, worth pointing and laughing at the Lions for a minute.

By most opinions, including their own (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000307168/article/tom-lewand-detroit-lions-coach-is-best-available-job), they had the best coaching job available.

Yet, the guy they apparently wanted most, Lovie, wouldn't even give them the courtesy of an interview.

From what I read, the Bucs made him an offer he couldn't refuse before he was able to interview with Detroit. I'm glad for it too. I don't want to think about that defense playing with the kind of stability and discipline that Lovie's defenses were known for. And Lovie's uncertain status with the Bears in Angelo's last years made it impossible to find a competent offensive coordinator. With a fresh start and new paper, I think even that could work itself out.

Lovie did witness the dysfunction of the Lions organization up close and probably heard the horror stories from Marinelli. So his use of Detroit as leverage versus Tampa may have been just a ruse. Anyway, it's worked out for the best. Go Bucs.

And now, Whisenhunt just chose the Titans (with essentially zero talent on offense) over the Lions.

32 of the seemingly most desirable jobs in the world. A field flooded with candidates, any one of whom should seemingly be desperate to take any of the handful of jobs that pop up each year. A team with an established and theoretically good starting quarterback, a great offensive line, two decent runningbacks, the best WR in the NFL and a dominant defensive line. There is nothing about this that should be hard, and the Lions ended up with a guy whose only claim to fame was once being the QB coach/toady of a hall of fame quarterback who famously coaches himself. Hilarious.
