It's going to be an amazing summer for Bulls fans - lots of rumors about getting Lebron, Love and/or Carmelo, only to be used as leverage and end up with Ben Gordon.

Can't wait for

A) Lebron re-signs with Heat at lower pay, takes Melo with him after other dudes restructure
B) Cavs fans, spurned again, burn what's left of Cleveland
C) At forward for the Bulls, from Duke, number five CARLOSSSSSS BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZER

Don't forget about the missing piece in the bulls 2015 championship run - aaron affalo.

If that's all they get it'd be a little disappointing, but he's a really good player and would fit well.

Well that's why I had my agent put that option year in there. It's a sound business move. Only fans of say, Rudy Geigh, opt into a deal like that.

I would root for LeBron's new team. But I would do so much more quietly than I have these past four years. As you guys know I was out on the NBA for several years following the demise of my old Knicks. I was a LeBron "fan" but didn't go full dong chug until he went to Miami and invigorated my interest in the league. Since then I've spent countless hours watching every team on League Pass, pouring over articles about the game, reading books about NBA history (Bill Simmons, Jack McCallum, David Halberstam etc.) and engaging in eleventy bajillion flame wars on the internet. I don't think it matters who LeBron plays for, I'm a fan of his game, not the Heat. I wasn't a fan of the New York Knicks. I was fan of Patrick Ewing. I wasn't a fan of the Celtics. I was a fan of Larry Bird. That's how it is for me. It makes me a target for ridicule and that's fine. The internet is fun. But I'm going to continue rooting for LeBron because I get a lot of joy out of that. I've made some excellent internet friends in the process and learned a ton about the sport. That all works for me.

Believe or not, I will also follow the Heat as I've grown to really like Erik Spoelstra and I hope that he could establish himself as a top flight coach independent of the game's best player. It's possible that after LeBron retires, I would just become a fan of Spoelstra. I glommed onto Jeff Van Gundy and Yao Ming's Rockets just for an ill-fated cup of coffee so I might do that again until the next player arrives who catches my undivided attention.

If you think that's weird, that's fine. You're probably really weird too in your own gross way.

In all seriousness, I have a friend that's a Kobe fan and would have followed him if he jumped to every team.

In all seriousness again, it's still fun as shit to ridicule said fans. YA GOTTA PICK A TEAM AND STICK WITH THEM LIKE I DID CAUSE YA GOTTA FEEL THE ANGUISH THAT WE FEEL WHEN THEY SUCK

I really like Lebron. Outside of one poorly thought out tv special he seems like a stand up guy, a family man, a guy with a great sense of humor about himself, and he's also one of the best basketballers ever.

Michael Jordan seems like he was a sociopath who was a terrible teammate and a worse friend. I'd just root for whichever players played well for my favorite team.

If you think that's weird, that's fine. You're probably really weird too in your own gross way.

Curious, what do you like so much about Spoelstra?

I like that he started out working as a staffer in the Miami film room studying tape for Riley and Stan Van Gundy, who realized right away that he was a gifted problem-solver and promoted him to the bench right away. After Riley banished SVG, Spoelstra was kept on and handpicked as the successor. A guy with that kind of resume wouldn't get much leverage on an NBA team but with Riley backing him up, the players had to listen. And they did listen, because what he was saying actually helped them. Wade supported him from the very beginning and when a superstar player does that, everybody else follow suit. Riley did the same with Jeff and Stan Van Gundy and both have been successful coaches and commentators ever since.

I really admire the way he re-designed Miami's offense to fully exploit all of LeBron's talent. When you watch old games of LBJ in Cleveland and especially his first year in Miami you see a lot of standing around on the perimeter, dribbling out the shot clock and one-dimensional stuff. Spoelstra changed the offense to become LeBron's personal toy box and he maximized the talent of the best player in the world and won two titles. Phil did the same with Jordan and Kobe. Pop did it with Duncan. It's fascinating.

I also think that he was under ridiculous pressure all four years and when he won, he received zero credit. When they lost to Dallas he was excoriated - and rightly so in that case. The circus act that Miami became would have been very difficult for someone with lesser character to survive. He flinched a lot but never broke. And by God he yanked Doc Rivers pants down (2012 ECF) and tore Pop a new asshole (2013 NBAF). Anybody that argues that can take a look at the tape and try to be objective just for a moment.

I think he's the tits. So does LeBron by the way.

Yeah that's kind of the exact opposite of my point. I'm just saying Jordan is held up as some kind of paragon of "playing the game the right way/acting the right way" and used as the unattainable platonic ideal that LeBron can never hope to reach and all of this is reason why we shouldn't like LeBron, when really it seems like none of that shit matters, and if it did, you'd think LeBron would be the better player since by almost all accounts he's a much nicer person and better teammate.

I don't hate Lebron

I really like Lebron. Outside of one poorly thought out tv special he seems like a stand up guy, a family man, a guy with a great sense of humor about himself, and he's also one of the best basketballers ever.

Jordan punched his teammates in the face in practice. Practice. We're talking about practice. And he bitched about them all to high heaven until Pippen came into his own and Phil got them rolling. That's who he was.

Pretty much this. I'd be thrilled if he was on the Bulls and any Bulls fan who says otherwise will change their mind 5 minutes into the first game.

He does put off sort of an A-Rod vibe that makes him easy to poke fun at, but that doesn't mean I dislike him. It's all entertainment anyway.

I think I meant more that he gets treated similar to A-Rod. Historically talented, but he's made a few missteps and people seem to dislike his every move.

Good article today (http://grantland.com/features/nba-draft-crapshoot-repick-1995/) on Grantland (Pen loves Bill Simmons meme alert) going back over the last ~20 drafts and looking at who should have gone where. Basically shows how big a crapshoot the draft is.

Not surprisingly, it's a long read, but shows the Bulls have done pretty well lately (Gibson, Butler, Noah, Rose, Asik)

Well, I made it this far:

QuoteAny time you can bake me a draft soufflé that's crammed with multiple tremendous-upside-potential guys, multiple red-flag guys, multiple panic-stricken teams, multiple workout-fueled lottery climbers and multiple teams desperately trying to trade up or down, I'm going to devour that thing.

Gasol is a marginally better Boozer, offensively. Just as bad defensively. Less annoying (much more lovable) and doesn't need spray paint for his hair.

He's a guy I wouldn't mind rooting for but it does zero for me making the Bulls a much better team.

This sucks.

He's a guy I wouldn't mind rooting for but it does zero for me making the Bulls a much better team.

This sucks.

Holy shit. No. He's more than marginally better than Boozer.

So Garpax's precious FLEXIBILITY is going to net the Bulls...34 year old Pau Gasol...if they're lucky? Awesome.

What numbers say he's much better than Boozer - not being a dick. Would love to hear your feedback.

It's not the numbers.  It's the letters that spell Lakers on the front of his jersey so he has to be good.  At least that's what Apex knows from watching the NBA for 3 years

I don't have a ton of time to research this but here is a shot chart for Boozer for 2012-13.

That let's you know WHERE his 13-16 points per game. And if you've watched him, you know his post game has forsaken him. So unless it's something around the goal off a rebound or a pass from a teammate, he's shooting low-percentage midrange jumpers. Not what you want from your power forward unless he's LaMarcus Aldridge or Chris Bosh.

Here's a Gasol shot chart from the same season:

He spaces the floor like a Bosh. He also passes the ball much better than Boozer and TWO CHAMMENSHIP RANGZ MOFUCKA!!!!

Smarter people with more internet time could do better. But there's my two cents.

Sorry - I'm not seeing this here.

Looks like Boozer is taking about 45% of his shots right by the basket, which looks pretty consistent with that 2nd Gasol chart. I counted 17/45 shots (purple circles) being right in the paint (42.5%).

If you want to say Gasol is a better passer, that's fine and fair.

But Gasol has also averaged 58 games/season over the past 3 years and Boozer has averaged 74, so that feels important too.

Ok, I don't have numbers that tell me that Gasol is guarded by opponents' best post defenders and Boozer is rarely respected and gets a lot of, "Oh, yeah. He can make that if you don't guard him, bro" shots.

The injury history is valid but Booz has not been a picture of health since signing that deal. So we can agree to disagree but I will argue until I'm blue in the face that an opposing team must account for Pau on defense and Boozer is a fucking turd.

... I'm feeling some meatball-esque irrtation as it becomes more clear how long this rebuilding process is going to take. But hey, every chance to win is sacred and all that, right?

Depends on what you mean by "a chance."

I guess we know what Theo meant by it.

What's your particular beef - with the moves they made (or didn't make) this offseason, or something else?

Basically, this thread is not for well-informed opinions so I don't really have much to offer. I just wish the team wasn't so terrible and that the short-term outlook was better. My irrational concern is that Theo will get too wrapped up in the purity of his farm/draft rebuild effort and not want to sign free agents or trade for bigger names and they'll still be a .500-or-worse ballclub in 2015.

This is based on absolutely nothing.

If the Cubs are going to suck anyway, why throw good money after bad? Also, in order to get any decent players to want to swim in this cesspool of bad ballplayers, they'd need to give them long-term deals that would eventually block younger players from moving up.

I don't think you'll still see the Kevin Greggs of the world around here next year. 2014 will be the March to .500.

If 2014 is about watching the top prospects (we know the names) sink or swim at the top level and evaluating them before filling in the gaps through trade/free agency for 2015, I'll be satisfied with the timeline. That means, I don't care if they're at or around .500 next year but by 2015, they'd better be or else, I don't know, go Heat.

Won't LeBron be back in Cleveland by then?

No.

So if Carmelo goes to the rebuilding Knicks, and LeBron is already rebuilding in Cleveland, that means the Bulls are in line to get slaughtered by the West in the Finals, right?

QuoteI’m not promising a championship. I know how hard that is to deliver. We’re not ready right now. No way. Of course, I want to win next year, but I’m realistic. It will be a long process, much longer than it was in 2010. My patience will get tested. I know that. I’m going into a situation with a young team and a new coach. I will be the old head. But I get a thrill out of bringing a group together and helping them reach a place they didn’t know they could go.

Yes that's probably humility they could totally win next year why must the Bulls remain in basketball hell

Keep your head up Apex, the Heat still have Spoelstra, the best coach in the NBA. And Shabazz Napier, who was lebron's favorite college player.
And Mcroberts and Danny Granger.

He's learned from his not 1, not 2, not 3 mistake. If they end up trading Wiggins (who wasn't mentioned in his letter) for Love, well fuck. But I'm done making predictions for awhile. I just can't right now.

For real though, I think we're about to find out that Spo is a pretty damn great coach.

It may take a couple years for them to have any talent on that team (what the hell are they going to do with all these cap space?) but I won't be surprised if Spoelstra turns out to actually be awesome.

Most of the Heat fans on my Twitter are saying that if they had known four years ago that all of these things would transpire, they'd have taken it and laughed the entire time. As Cub fans, can you just imagine? Four years of World Series and two rings and then BOOM, they're the Cubs again forever. I'd take it and laugh the whole time.

So my DECISION is this. I'll be following the Cavs, Heat, Rockets (expecting Bosh decision), Celtics (Brad Stevens coaches there) and fuck it, why not, the Knicks next season.

In my lifetime, I've called each of those teams my favorite. I don't really feel like picking one right now, although LeBron remains my favorite player (yay.) Maybe one of them will pick me. I don't know.

I need about four months to process this.

You're allowed to just be a fan of the NBA and watch games with fun players in them. That's ok to do.

Keep your head up Apex, the Heat still have Spoelstra, the best coach in the NBA. And Shabazz Napier, who was lebron's favorite college player.
And Mcroberts and Danny Granger.

I don't know that I would. Who is telling me this is going to happen? How does he know? Are all of the sports fixed? What is the point of the sports then? Is he an angel? Why is he revealing this only to me? This is a terrible weight for me to bear. No one will believe me if I tell them, then when it happens they'll wonder how I knew. Maybe they see me as a threat. Maybe they fear my powers, when they aren't even my powers.

This is no laughing matter here.

Ok, let's say all he's offering is Trout, Kershaw, Kluber, Miggy, Cano, Puig, Harper and Stasburg for four years. No strings attached. But they're all going to leave.

I mean, if Rose could truly be healthy and great for a whole season, along with Noah, Gibson, Butler, a hopefully decent McDermott and an intriguing Mirotic, it's not a bad team at all, but...FUCK.

Go #whitebasketball.

Literally more white dudes than the 1954 Hickory Huskers.

Jesse Jackson just threatened to shut them down if they didn't address the situation.

Spike Lee just threw a trash can through a window of the Berto Center.

Even the 1986 Celtics are like, "What?"

----

But seriously, I don't see anything not to like about this Bulls team. I consider myself a man without a country at the moment and I'm hoping to go see a couple games this year. I'm really intrigued by Mirotic and I can't wait to see what Rose brings to the table after this surgery. Butthurt level: sinking.

Relax. I'm not buying a shirsey. I just want to go to a game and not root against the home team. In fact, if they're playing Indiana or the Lakers, I'll stand up and clap when they dunk.

A lot of the Bulls bloggers seem mentally worn out by this front office and org. and I can't blame them. But this team sounds really fun.

The unfortunate thing is we have to assume health and Noah will miss a good chunk of time as usual. I actually think Rose gets through the whole season.

A lot of the success this year will be on Thibs. If he can get players rest instead of grinding out every regular season game, the Bulls could be competitive in the playoffs. Gasol is 34, he doesn't need to be playing every minute of every game. There is no need for Rose to play the entire game every game either. Thibs also needs to get Mirotic, Dougie and Snell regular minutes, to take some of the load off other players.

Thibs also needs to get Mirotic, Dougie and Snell regular minutes, to take some of the load off other players.

For the first time since he starting coaching here, Thibs actually has bench players that can play meaningful minutes and not lose the game for them.  They could conceivably go 10 deep and have quality (depending obviously on that foreign guy, McBuckets, and Snell being good) NBA talent in the game.  He couldn't play Erik Murphy or whatever bums the last few years b/c then they'd just lose every game.  Thibs and the team didn't want to tank, which they probably should have just done, but once they decided to win as many games as they could, they had to go with the 7 man rotation and play starts a shitton of minutes.  He had to have learned from watching the Spurs that once you have guys good enough to put in and actually play well, resting the starters is a must.

Now it'll bring all the Fros out of the woodworks and say that if he had rested his starters the last few years Rose wouldn't have gotten hurt ever and they'd have won the chammienship or something.  But whatevs.  As long as pex doesn't turn into a Bulls fan when they're going to win the East, it's all good this year.

I'm confused - now that the Cavs are getting Kevin Love you're NOT gonna root for them?

Is it because you hate when teams put together a bunch of big stars?

You know it's possible to not switch every year to a new team to root for?  You can pick one and stick with it forever if you want.

Prepare to not be excited?  Or be excited that the team you chose to root for this year now is stacked?  Or keep rooting for the Heat again?  I'm not sure what team you're switching to follow and be a fan of this year, but Kevin Love is going to the Cavs.

My Bleacher Report APP told me that the Cavs might sign E'Twaan Moore to wave towels on the bench. If that happens, I'm all the way the fuck in.

I'm sure once the Bears Super Bowl Parade is over and Cutler ends the Middle East crisis, I'll turn my attention toward basketball full time and let my Cavs boner breathe a bit. But I don't think it will come with the same type of juice that the Heat boner did. There were so many haters and trolls to destroy on the internets with that one. This will just be about watching my favorite player play awesome basketball with a talented team that beats teams 137-129. Hopefully Kurt Rambis will make a cameo and clothesline somebody.

Something something Purdue can't spell and your basketball choices are stupid.  Actually I don't really have an opinion or care.

1. Cleveland - They may struggle out of the box to find an identity and learn the system, accept roles. But that may be to their advantage later as they will have to play hard in the dog days to achieve consistency. And I just don't really like any other team's roster enough to pick them first.
2. Washington - This will no longer be a young, inexperienced team. They picked up Pierce who, if nothing else will give them some much-needed perspective and professionalism.
3. Toronto. - Just too much talent not to finish in the top half of this conference.
4. Chicago - I'm putting them here because I have absolutely no idea what this team is. Nobody does. I expect they'll play hard no matter what so ... 4th.
5. Charlotte - If healthy, Al Jefferson will take a huge step forward and make the all-star team. They're the Hornets now so the huge dark cloud of suck that hovered over them may be gone, at least psychologically. I think that's good for a two spot jump in the conference.
6. Atlanta - I would have picked them higher if not for the Danny Ferry fuckery. This franchise was pointed in the right direction and seemed like it had a solid plan moving forward. All of that might have been undone this past offseason and the new leadership might tear it all down.
7. Miami - Wade is terrible now. Bosh will have inflated stats and provide some entertainment. Deng will ably replace LeBron DEFENSIVELY but... who scores on this team besides Bosh? I retain enough faith in Riley and Spoelstra to believe this won't be a complete leper colonization but I don't know, it might be.
8. Brooklyn - Somebody has to be the 8th seed and of the teams who could qualify, the Nets are the only ones who actually figure to want it. Detroit, Milwaukee and Boston should be tanking. New York may have enough to go out in a blaze of 9th place glory. Indiana really should be phoning this season in and I think Larry Bird is smart enough to know that. Their only hope is a triumphant return of Roy Hibbert as an offensive threat. If that happens, they could stupidly win the 8th seed or better.

I think he mitigates some of the problems they have with their coach being a useless shite. At the very least he gives them a playoff-tested veteran voice in the huddle telling Wall and Beal to PAY THE FUCK ATTENTION. With any luck, he'll be healthy and competitive come playoff time and give them a legitimately feared crunch time scoring threat who can actually make a free throw if his season depends on it. They'll miss Ariza's defense. But even at 37 Pierce is a guy the opponent must account for in the waning moments. That can't do anything but help Wall and Beal.

The Bulls do look good. They'll be challenged a lot more than they were in the opener but this team is extremely interesting to watch. Friday night vs. Cleveland should be fun as hell and lack most of the venom and hate that had built up between the Bulls and LeBron's Heat. That could all change by season's end but Friday might actually be about two very good basketball teams feeling each other out as they find their own identities. Good times.

That's the latest in a line of streaky midgets to excel in the Derrick Rose role in Thibs' system. It's a thing. It didn't get press because Brooks isn't good. But he could fuck around and get himself PAID after this stint.

Bulls scribes have reported that those two are on a strict minutes diet of between 30-35 per. I wonder if he'd get in trouble for violating that.

I don't think Thibs changed.  He actually has a bunch of good bench guys that can play with some other teams' starters, so he's confident in playing them extended minutes.  He wants to win even if it means running his starters into the ground, but he might not have to do that this year b/c they're more than a legit 7 guys deep

Cleveland has dealt with injuries and moving pieces so they're stuck on stupid for several more weeks it looks like. Milwaukee has overcome the loss of Jabari Parker nicely enough to rise above the horseshit in the East. Jason Kidd knows what the fuck he's doing, it turns out. Charlotte? Jesus Christ. So after guessing none of the Eastern Playoff seeds correct I shall now do that thing where I guess the entire Playoffs correctly. This time I'm going to do the West as well and I'm sure I'll get it completely wrong because I don't stay up late enough to see those teams play against one another very often.

East:

1. Atlanta over 8. Brooklyn 4-0.
2. Cleveland over 7. Boston 4-0.
3. Chicago over 6. Milwaukee 4-1.
4. Toronto over 5. Washington 4-2.

1. Atlanta over 4. Toronto 4-2.
2. Cleveland over 3. Chicago 4-0.

2. Cleveland over 1. Atlanta 4-2.

West

1. Golden State over 8. New Orleans 4-0.
7. Dallas over 2. Houston 4-2.
5. Memphis over 4. Portland 4-3.
6. San Antonio over 3. L.A. Clippers 4-3.

1. Golden State over 5. Memphis 4-2
6. San Antonio over 7. Dallas 4-3.

6. San Antonio over 1. Golden State 4-2.

FINALS

Spurs over Cavs 4-2

Finals MVP
K. Leonard.

EDIT: Cavs sweep Bulls. I was being nice but fuck that.

If the Thunder are dead serious about seeing Durant leave town, they'll hire a man with a reputation for turning players into glue and losing in the postseason.

So after guessing none of the Eastern Playoff seeds correct I shall now do that thing where I guess the entire Playoffs correctly. This time I'm going to do the West as well and I'm sure I'll get it completely wrong because I don't stay up late enough to see those teams play against one another very often.

East:

1. Atlanta over 8. Brooklyn 4-0.
2. Cleveland over 7. Boston 4-0.
3. Chicago over 6. Milwaukee 4-1.
4. Toronto over 5. Washington 4-2.

1. Atlanta over 4. Toronto 4-2.
2. Cleveland over 3. Chicago 4-0.

2. Cleveland over 1. Atlanta 4-2.

West

1. Golden State over 8. New Orleans 4-0.
7. Dallas over 2. Houston 4-2.
5. Memphis over 4. Portland 4-3.
6. San Antonio over 3. L.A. Clippers 4-3.

1. Golden State over 5. Memphis 4-2
6. San Antonio over 7. Dallas 4-3.

6. San Antonio over 1. Golden State 4-2.

FINALS

Spurs over Cavs 4-2

Finals MVP
K. Leonard.

EDIT: Cavs sweep Bulls. I was being nice but fuck that.

Through the first round, you picked 5 of 8 series correctly.
Gonna get worse from here on out though.
