Just getting an early start.

Won't need this thread for at least ten more seconds.

Not sure if wrong is the correct adjective for these  (https://twitter.com/ivychat/status/504612981075103744) tweets (https://twitter.com/ivychat/status/504614880650199040) as much weird, stupid and pointless.

Can we finally settle on Castro as the new FYC?

Or maybe Castro and Baez?

Fork's big on the bereavement excuse....as if the sudden death of four friends can compel someone to not run out of the box after hitting the ball.

If the problem is as chronic as Kap, Kasper etc. say, it could have waited until next time for the pile-on, since there would be a next time fairly soon.

I looked at Starlin after he booted the ball at short and walked his way out of a double and I saw a guy who felt like shit about it and wanted to make up for it. In my mind he was extremely upset with himself. He's 24. Shit happens. Shit like having your cousin and three friends die in a car crash. If you don't think something like that can be a distraction, fuck you. If you think it's not a big deal and not running out a ball to center is, you have real issues.

Take this, all of you, and drink from it:

Quote"I felt bad for him," Renteria said. "He was apologizing to everybody. He knew he should have been [on second base]. He's got a lot on his mind. When a young man tells you he made a mistake, what can you say?"

http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/26975/error-filled-tilt-made-worse-by-starlin-castros-baserunning-blunder

Nothing is fucked here, dude. Starlin is going to be a very good player for a very long time. I hope they don't trade him.

Me neither.

Poor bastard. I've never had anyone really die on me way before their time let alone FOUR people at the same time.

Fuck off with your hustle out of the box bullshit for now. Jesus.

Look--I'll grant it as feasible distraction in the field where there many stretches with nothing happening involving a player and his mind can wander.

I just don't understand how it can serve as a distraction in the fraction of a second between crushing a ball and running out of the box.  Are you saying he was able to block it out while focusing on smashing the shit out of the baseball and then instantaneously became so overcome by the distraction of his loss that he lost sight of what he needed to do?

I feel bad for what he's gone through.  I unexpectedly lost two friends 18 months apart when I was 21 and 22 and understand that it can wreak havoc on your concentration.  I also think the knee-jerk reaction by asshats like Kap et.al calling for his benching are uncalled for.

But there's still room to call him out for that at-bat.  If you don't like that, then you can fuck off just the same.

DPD

I apologize for derailing this thread.

Chuck's tweet was idiotic, I still love Starlin and I hope we can resume getting this thread back on track.

I feel like when guys like Kaplan scream about playing the game hard and "the right way" they're really saying, "I wasn't good enough to play professional baseball so you owe it to me to look like you're trying really hard all the time because that's what I would do if I were you." Even though they're wrong about that, too.

I think it's possible to think "fuck I crushed that ball, it's gone" when it really isn't. Especially when your nerves are shot to shit from grieving with your family and friends for an entire week.

I also think it's possible to say, "Starlin really should have run there and he knows it." End of discussion.

Fuck Kaplan in his fucking bald orange face.

Pretty much the whole thing here is "Fuck Kaplan"

No one else should feel bad. Kaplan should feel bad but he's incapable of such a thing.

That's exactly it. They know they could never hit the ball or field the ball the way one of these guys does, but dammit, Trying Hard is what I can do better than a major league baseball player. They owe it to me to give no less than the effort I'd imagine I'd give myself, except if I had that kind of natural ability I probably wouldn't.

Barely related, but my dad still talks about his .710 batting average in junior high being a school record that's still on the wall at the school and how they called him "little Pete Rose" because by god his uniform was always dirty and when Starlin did that last night I just sat there waiting for the text message from Ol' Little Pete himself and sure enough there it was when I woke up this morning. DISGRACE TO DA GAME

Hendry was fat, not likely a real effort guy at the exercise. Starlin is a Hendry guy. Theo's guys will hustle more I think.

Kap had Brennaman on this morning to talk about Castro. Wonder how that went.

I used to think Kap was just a harmless fucking idiot, but he gets so goddamn preachy and whiny and self righteous about everything, and sadly he's like Al in that he has the power to shape the opinion of a large chunk of the fanbase.

I also hate his usual twitter argument method of:

Kap: Something stupid
Person: Kap that is really fucking stupid
Kap: CONDESCENSING OLD SCHOOL BULLSHIT
Person: Irrefutable evidence
Kap: Agree to disagree, thanks for being a fan, pal!
