Title: Time to firebarn Brian Schlitter
Post by: Oleg on April 15, 2015, 11:45:36 AM
Now here's an asshole I can get behind hating.  Waste of a roster spot.

And, he went to Maine South.  Fuck him.

I think Mike Olt's splooge thread eventually became the Firebarn Olt thread, and that's a fate worse than death.

I kind of hope Snork re-signs with the Cubs this offseason. Best case he's a solid #3, worst case we've already got the thread warmed up.

It was utterly amazing he actually got three strikes on a hitter. There was zero chance he was going to get a fourth.

Maddon should've pulled him after the blown call.

I see that he's diversifying.  Instead of just allowing in his own runs, he's moved on to also alienating his teammates by allowing inherited runners to score.  So that's...something.

I get that Joe has to use him because they were taxed by the extra innings game, Lester didn't go deep, Ramirez is hurt, etc. I get that.

But why not try Motte (and yes, I know he gave up the homer but he'd been scoreless until then) try to wiggle you out of the men-on-base jam, and then see if Schlitter can go an inning on his own without sharting himself? Using Schlitter in the higher leverage situation is just bad.

Joe Maddon's no idiot...methinks Schlitter is going to be spending a little time butthugging that bench while Edwin Jackson moves ahead of him in the bullpen.

The middle innings are a real shitshow right now. The starters will get stretched out soon, I hope and they'll rely less on Schlitter, Jason Motte and Phil Meth. I know it's insane, but I actually wouldn't mind seeing E-Jax get a tryout in a leverage situation, as he can't be worse than the aforementioned. Actually, I guess he can.

But if you're looking for reasons why the enthusiasm should be tempered and the postseason we covet may be at least a year away, these slapdicks might be it. I know the Reds and Pirates have similar issues in that area. A lot of teams do at this point with starters going 5-6 innings a start and back ends of rotations still in flux. But this could be a real bad deal for us.

Also, anyone who had a problem with Pedro Strop at anytime during his tenure here now has this opportunity to apologize, directly to me.

I'd be more worried if there weren't reinforcements coming eventually in Grimm and Ramirez, and you can always flip minor prospects for bullpen arms. It may be June before they have them both in there or get other help, but as long as they can stay above water till then I think they should still be poised for a run as the starters get stretched out, Lester settles in, and hopefully the offense stays hot.

Speaking of stretching out starters, did any of our beloved beat reporters get an answer from Maddon as to why he pulled Wood (so to speak)?

Yeah, bullpen help is pretty easy to find and the Cubs (obviously) have the prospect depth to go get it.

Oh man I can't wait till we get to the "people who bitched about trading Snork and Co. for prospects now bitch about giving up prospects for veterans" part of the schedule.

We have our own shitty veteran pitching decently enough right now in Edwin Jackson. Make us believers, Edwin.

It says a lot about how the previous decades of Cub fandom lowered my expectations that I assumed Schlitter would be something we'd have to watch all season long no matter how terrible he pitched.

So, this tells me the Cubs thought Brian Schlitter was so schlitty that they decided they couldn't even wait for the desired roster move. To Junior's credit, he was hitting almost .300 and trying to take more walks and hit for more contact.

Or hopefully he can not play at all unless someone gets hurt. But even if he does play, at least he can only make outs and not set himself and the lead on fire like Brian Schlitter. In that way, he is an improvement.
