This. It's one thing when Starlin Castro or whatever has a bad week of BABIP luck, but Coghlan's just as likely to stop squaring up the ball so much and make softer outs than he is to keep hitting hard and start getting good results. His history mostly suggests he's not very good.

I expect Soler to begin to make more contact because that's what his profile and his minor league history and what he did last year suggests he'll do. He never was billed as a high K guy. Bryant's probably just going to keep that up, but it doesn't really matter given his walk rate and the quality of contact he gets when he makes contact. Russell it's hard to tell. His walk rate when down in the minors last year and he hasn't walked much yet but he's just so damn young and inexperienced. He doesn't seem to chase a lot of stuff outta the zone, so hopefully the K's disappear a bit as he sees more big league pitching.

situational strikeouts, Chuck D? Can you crank up the ole' machine for that? Like what the pitch sequence and outcome has been in situations with, say, a runner on third and 1 out, that kind of stuff? I'm not even sure what it'd tell us--baseball's hard, you know? Dude's sometime strike out with a runner on third and one out when a long pop fly scores a run (or a runner on second with no outs when moving him over with a roller to second is preferred to a K). And I doubt it happens often enough to draw conclusions during a season that's 5 weeks old but I'd bet that in the long run Bryant (and Soler maybe) would strike out a lot less in those situations but in any event I really think fretting about strikeouts
as a whole is a little silly.

My level of concern over the Bryant Ks is 0. He has great situational awareness, he battles back to take walks as noted, and he shortens his swing and stuff with 2 strikes. I'm only mildly concerned about Jorge striking out because he's never really done it much before and he does so much damage when he makes contact I just want to see him be patient again and go back to driving the ball. I think he'll be fine.
Russell I have zero concerns with period on anything. He's 21 years old and he's got a 9 game hitting streak with lots of great ABs that led to extra base hits. Ks are Ks. They'll go down a bit with experience but you're right, for the most part they're just outs.
Coghlan though? Fuck him. Stop striking out, fuckface.

A K isn't the end of the world, especially if you OBP over .400. But when you're not, and you're K-ing 30% of the time, it's a bit alarming and Mike Oltish. So, yeah. I tell myself not to get too carried away about K's, but I also don't want to just totally disregard them as the same as a ground out.

Yeah. For what it's worth Rusell only K'd in about 21% of his PAs in the minors (which really isn't bad at all these days as far as I know, right?) and only 16.4% of his AA plate appearances (15.2% in his brief AAA stint this year). Seems likely his K rate should slowly become acceptable as he gets used to the majors.

I really don't understand...I 100% expect both of them to succeed in that situation. You can't sit there and say you expect Coghlan to fail so fuck him, but when he does succeed fuck him still? Just maybe think for a second that Chris Coghlan is not the one to firebarn, man. Edwin Jackson has a one-story, one-bedroom single light bulb firebarn full of dry twigs and lighter fluid ready and no one else belongs there.
Coghlan also made a couple nice plays in LF last night...didn't he throw someone out, too? Maybe it looks like he makes the plays despite his abilities, I agree on that, but at least he made them.

I feel like you're reaching on hating Coghlan. His numbers are not impressive, but his peripherals say he's unlucky. So I'm going with "not time to hate yet" because the guy just won a game with a walk (that Huey thinks he could have walked a little better) and has made several solid plays in the outfield. I'm not mounting up for Chris Coghlan, but I am saying that you're finding the lowest hanging fruit in a strong lineup. And I get it, it's fun to be silly and crank up our hatewagons and hitch our hellish rides to whomever we feel deserves it. I just don't think Coghlan does.
And there isn't a one seat ride on the firebarn express, it's just that the way I see it the current roster only has one hateable guy and it's Jackson. Coghlan is lurking on the outside looking in, but he's not there yet for me.

Yeah that was my next point...if not Coghlan, then what's the realistic alternative? It's probably not better than Chris Coghlan.
ETA: Unless the alternative is Bryant to LF and Baez called up at some point...
ETA 2.0: There was a thing on a website a few days ago that showed Coghlan has a low BABiP and the highest hard hit % in MLB all while being somewhat average in walking and striking out. There's definitely something to the unlucky ideal, right?

I'm not mounting up for Chris Coghlan, but I am saying that you're finding the lowest hanging fruit in a strong lineup. ETA: I do want to say that Coghlan's LD% is almost 24% and his hard contact % is almost 33%...it's not all terrible, but the results aren't show up. I would still trust him to make a decent AB off the bench.

Lake will be better defensively, at least marginally, and it's hard to see him hitting worse (unless he's still as useless against sliders out of the zone).
If Olt can come back healthy, Bryant to left with Olt getting Coughlins ABs seems like the best outcome that doesn't involve calling someone else up or making a trade.

Well, he has a point. It's a fucking irrelevant point but, as a player, I'd want him to feel like he can do anything he wants to do. It's up to the manager to do what's best for the team.

"You could see him there," Maddon responded. "You could."
But on Friday it was Schwarber's turn in right. He was followed by Austin Jackson.
"I wanted to make sure he got some work out there," Maddon said of Schwarber. "It's something you can see. ... The whole point is to maximize what we are able to do at any one particular moment. ... We have options. We don't have to do it just one way."
Coghlan says he'll be ready as a starter or off the bench, but there's little doubt he feels he should be in the lineup come Wednesday.
"I expect to play every day," he said. "[Maddon has] already made his decision I'm not going to play against lefties, so I'm content in that. But if a right-hander is pitching I expect to play that night. So when it's not there, yeah, it is a disappointment.
"If you look at numbers at the end of the day, I do feel like I've produced enough to earn that. Whether that happens or not, I don't know. That's all up to Joe ... I do know with Joe, when you're not playing, from the third inning on you have to be ready."
Coghlan was asked whether it matters if he gets a few hits this weekend against the Brewers.
"For me? No," he responded. "Maybe for Joe. It's been a long year. My body of work speaks for itself. Or it should."

Austin Jackson is a starter on any number of teams who doesn't bitch about being a defensive replacement. Jorge hit three bombs in a week and then basically got buried the second he cooled off. The only guy to bitch about playing time on this team all year has been Coghlan, who has done it twice. He's openly questioning Maddon and it's irritating. He can say he has confidence in himself without phrasing it like he's openly questioning Joe.

Agreed. I thought he answered it pretty well, all things considered.
It's an incredibly long, drawn-out answer. He offered up paragraphs of material. Even if you're asked about it specifically, have some self-awareness and realize that four days before a playoff game is a great time to just shut the fuck up about playing time. You can believe in your own delusional mind that you're the best player on the team or whatever, but just give a brief answer and move on. You're not bound by law to spout off whatever is floating through your head.
It's also not the first time he's complained about playing time this year either. This is the kind of stuff people hated Todd Walker for.

I'm inclined to agree, because Schwarber is potentially amazing. But he's also been slumping for a month. It's not necessarily an easy choice for Maddon.

I appreciate what Clutch Coghlan has provided, but yeah, take it somewhere else of that's how younger about it, red-ass. I remember something a month or so ago wherein the Cubs had some sick W/L record w/Coghlan batting third, with him only hitting like .240 while there....clearly some anomalous fact that sounds like it'd be just the kind of fact that he he'd hang his hat on as an analyst.

I'm not drawing any conclusions from it. Just pointing it out. Especially since his other peripherals are right where they've always been. So, maybe he makes a bit more contact and evens things out? Maybe whatever it is that's made Fowler good in CF is used to make Cog a bit better out in LF? maybe he just sucks and won't get more than 50 more PAs and we'll be done with him once LaStella and/or Soler are back?
