The division isn't out of reach by any means thanks to the head to heads the Cubs have left. They can effectively flush the Giants this week - and if they stay hot the Pirates and Cards will be in striking distance when they meet in September.

September is going to be NUTS.

If the Cubs do sweep St. Louis, there will be a bunch of St. Loserians with sphincters tighter than when they drive through Ferguson.

I could give a shit about the mere fact that they lost. It's the continued pants shitting by Grimm and Strop these last few weeks that worries me.

This.

Though Strop at least looked like Old Strop after walking the lead off hitter tonight.

Still have a hard time trusting him.  Rondon is the only reliever I feel confident about.  Not fazed by his performance tonight either.

The bullpen is a definite concern.

I disagree.  Bryant had  a decent enough jump, and the ball got past he pitcher up the middle.  The only reason Bryant wasn't safe was because the infielder made a fortuitously bad throw that was up the 3td base line--leading the catcher to Bryant.  If he throws it over the plate or even a bit up the first base line, Bryant slides in under the tag.  No question.

The most frustrating thing about that play was that Baez reached for a pitch on the outer half and tried to pull it.  If he simply took that ball the other way--where the only player on that side was the Phillies' 2,000 year old first baseman, who stood 35 feet from 1st base, Bryant would have been able to walk home on his hands.

1 out, infield in, nobody else on base. You don't go unless the ball gets through.

There's a first time for everything.

I hope they spend that #1 pick on the best pass rusher in the draft. And I hope he doesn't have a broken leg when they draft him. That'd be so great.

I love your passion for this thread. But I feel your talents could be better used elsewhere. We need your help with the playoff rosters. We have a bunch of names and positions but we haven't the foggiest idea what each player will contribute once they get there. I'll bet that you do however.

John Fox.

In their final 65 games of the season, the Cubs won at a rate that would translate into 115 wins over a full season. Small sample size, but Sweet Jesus.

I prefer a larger sample size.  The Cubs are 478 games over .500 since 1876. They are good.

That's an important point. The final 65 games refer to the last week of July, August and September? At this point, the bad teams are packing it in, or cleaning out the dead weight, or bringing in rookies to see what they have. The good teams are that much better though.

In those last 65 games, they played 35 games against the likes of Colorado (3), Milwaukee (13), Detroit (2), Atlanta (4), Cinicinnati (6), Arizona (3) and Philly 4.  They went 27-8 against those teams, including 12-1 vs. Milwaukee. They played 30 games vs the likes of Pittsburgh (9), San Francisco (7), the Sox (3)*, Cleveland (1), LA (3), the Cardinals (6) and KC (1). They went 19-11 vs. them, including 11-8 vs. the playoff teams (5-4 over PIT, 4-2 over STL, 1-0 over KC, 1-2 vs. LA).

* The Sox are the Sox, but that was their series of the year. At that point, a sweep of the Cubs \might have made them think they were WC contenders again.
