The thread title's missing a jism/orgasm/splooge reference. Go sort it.

That's exactly why it doesn't have one.

Fuck that POS Montero for costing the rookie his 1st PA due to not having a clue WTF to do at the plate anymore. Another 0-5 for Montero's useless ass and he's under the Mendoza line. Hopefully this kid learns VERY fast about framing and handling the staff, so Montero can sit his ass on the bench come August most of the time.

Willson was VERY excited to be playing MLB. I enjoyed him shaking the umpire's hand.

Montero hit that ball 108 mph.

Also they won by 6 runs.

Yeah, but they rank 29th out of 30 in getting rookies their 1st PA this year (if Almora hadn't gotten his, they'd be tied with the Nats at zero).

HOW MANY TEARS THEO?

After seeing him in a few games, I believe it. He plays with a lot of intensity, like a not-annoying version of John Lackey. Bizarro Lackey.

A potential comp, although I'm not convinced Willson has the same appetite for murder.

There's a lot of extra room in the new locker room and you could probably find some quiet private space to rub one out. It would have been really awkward in the old locker room doing it next to the batting tee.

Uh yeah, that's not gonna happen. At the very least he's Arrieta's personal catcher which is kind of an important job.

I think you saw the leaves falling, they showed it multiple times with close ups on the TV and you could not see the ball, but a cluster of leaves fell out and that seemed to be what the crowd reacted to.

Yup.  I thought the same thing on TV when I saw it the first time but the first replay made it clear it was the back of a bunch of leaves--that sort of looked white-- that fooled everybody.

Isn't the ground rule that as long as the ball is in the ivy and the fielder doesn't try to find it then it's a GR double?  For some reason I always remembered a game in early April when the the ivy leaves hadn't come in yet where the ball stuck in the branches and both OFs threw up their hands and got the GR doubled call despite the ball being plainly visible.

The exact rule:
Quote
A fair ball becoming lodged in the ivy on the outfield fence awards two bases to the batter and all runners, if the ball falls out of the ivy, it remains in-play.

It's kind of umpire's discretion what "stuck" is but generally they give it to them if it doesn't fall onto the track or grass. I think the only time I've ever seen them not rule it a ground rule double was a game where I remember Moises reached in and tried to get it out and then stuck it back when he realized he had no chance of throwing out the runner.

How was that a ground rule double when I could see the ball from 400 feet away?

That is exactly the rule.  I was at that game (early last year, apparently Byrant's debut) and, even though you could see the ball in the bare brown vines from 450 feet away, if its sticks in the ivy and the fielder doesn't try to get it, its a double.

Willy heating back up would be neat. Remember how Schwarber went cold and then exploded in the playoffs? Maybe that's the next step in his quest to be Latino Schwarbs.

Bump for running hard and beating a double play on a grounder so the Cubs were still alive to win that game. He's been slumping but we can still appreciate the effort. 70-grade makeup.

The sliding catch he made to rob Cano of a bloop double (or did he catch it in foul territory? Looked to me like it was about to dink into left field) was huge, too.

I know this is from last week (http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/willson-contreras-has-developed-into-an-everyday-catcher/)...I'm just catching up on my reading.  Basically, anyone who thinks Contreras is not good at catching can go pound sand.  That probably includes anyone who wants to blame him for Arrieta's 7 walk start.

Why do teams still take leads? The Cubs have to lead the league in pickoffs. I like that the catchers have the freedom to just launch laser beams at baserunners. It seems like yet another way the Cubs have found a way to get free outs. I love this organization so much, and it's in large part due to the players being so goddamn good and likeable but also because this version of the Cubs organization is in such stark contrast to the one from my many years loathing them before Theo and Jed took over.

Baseball-Reference shows 8 pickoffs. The next closest team is at 5

Because Jankowski runs the bases like his hair is on fire, which has led to some fun moments (stealing home last week), and getting nabbed twice in two games this week.

I thought the fact that it tied the game for the Cubs was worthwhile. If it had barely cleared the fence aided by a 40 mph gale force wind and the catcher said "ser, I daresay ser that home run was in no way honorable and I am not impressed in the slightest" I would have still deemed it worthwhile.

Indeed! Not many people would think hitting someone in their left arm would cause throwing problems with their right. But Contreras is basically Bobby Fischer without the anti-semitism.

I mostly feel bad for Willson who was having a borderline-supreme season.  I think it's good they have Avila, and Caritini has apparently gotten hot since going back after homering and winning a game in his last plate appearance for the Cubs so there's a chance they can mitigate, to some degree, Willson's absence but if he's shut down for the season then that'd be tough to overcome in the playoffs.

FUCK

As long as he's only out a month, nothing is fucked.

If he's done for the year, well fuck.

Gonna need to revise expectations from "Cubs are back!" To "First Team to 85 Wins The Division"

Fowler's hammy cost him 4 weeks last year, correct?

Probably time to give Grandpa a call.

Question for the statfhags...

I can't find it, but I wonder how much better/worse Contreras' framing (which is a problem at all times) gets with men on base.

Asking because I wonder if his desire to show off the cannon attached to his right shoulder is costing pitchers strikes.

Bump for the starting NL catcher's gig. And for being better than Yadi.

Bump.

After a startling 2+ month regression, the ball is starting to fly off Contreras' bat lately.

Willy looks like he's back and not a moment too soon.

August: .159/.245/.205/.449

0-7 since you posted that.

If he's not hurt, man. What a collapse.

Schwarber can probably still play catcher, right?
