MODS! I object. Tyler Chatwood is not the kind of guy who gets a preemptive "damn this dude is good" thread. Bryce Harper signs here? Ok, fine, yes. Start that shit. Tyler Chatwood? No. I'm holding both Fork and Chuck responsible for this.

Ditto.  I know that December is a slow month for baseball news, but how low have we sunk that this is all that we have to talk about?

Shit I can remember when Tonk yelled at me for starting a Dexter Fowler splooge thread after he hit a game-winning HR off LaTroy Hawkins, and here just two years later we're starting pre-emptive threads for this year's Jason Hammel? Mais non.

It's my fault that Fork is so easily goaded?

Maybe he's just pissed there was no malort at the bat mitzvah.

To be fair, it wasn't the starting of the thread per se that wound me up (otherwise I'd have reacted to Fork rather than you), so much as the conclusions that were being drawn from an extremely small sample size:

So this is what having an actual leadoff hitter feels like...who knew?

And to get actual production from center field for the first time in ages seems nice. Outside of a half season of Edmonds in '08 that left me feeling as confused and dirty as that one summer at Camp Winnebago I don't think the Cubs have had a center fielder worth a shit since...fuck. I don't know.

I don't want to go all Eli on you, but c'mon guys: we're five games in, for fuck sake.

Yeah, but Fowler's career numbers (particularly OPB) indicate that this sort of thing will be a thing.

I'm happy to have him, but Fowler has been, until now, offensively speaking, very slightly above average.  For a CF, that's pretty nice, but not exactly setting anything on fire.  At his age, he's probably not going to get a hell of a lot better than he has been up to this point, either.  He's a decent part of a good team, but in years to come we're not going to be fondly reminiscing over the Dexter Fowler era.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, he's no Reed Johnson.

Still, holy shit was I wrong.

Considering the fact that his GB% the past two years has been 57.2% and 58.1%, his having the Best Infield In The Worldtm behind him will make him thread-worthy anyway.

It's a good thing for you that you pulled this yourself because if I had managed to stumble across this first, I'd have crucified you.  It's as if Fork and Chuck had a child together and it was this take.  Not only was it wrong, at the time, about Fowler's history (he was a decidedly an above-average OBP guy) but hitting a lead-changing 9th inning homerun with 2 outs off noted fuckstick LaTroy Hawkins to take an early-season series is an entirely appropriate time to start a splooge thread.  Bad, Tonker, BAD.

1. An argument can be made that Fowler underperformed in 2015, compared to what he had done in his career up to that point.  In 2016, he was decidedly above average as a hitter.
2. Perhaps we can splooge about Chatwood's spin rate on his fastball for now? (https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/what-the-cubs-might-see-in-tyler-chatwood/)

I guess Chatwood sounds Jewish.

Having no other background on him, I'd venture he's a better Jew than Oleg or me.

Indeed.  I'm a better jew than either of you.

Ali's a better jew than either of them and she almost forgot to light the candles tonight.
Thanks for reminding me.  Tonight is first night of Hanukkah.  8 days from now I will be about 10 pounds heavier because of a diet of Donna's potato latkes.

I had my body weight in latkes last night.

I also had 2 latkes yesterday.  And to paraphrase, what am I, chopped liver?

My Catholic wife absolutely nailed Hannukah dinner last night. Homemade latkes from raw potatoes, brisket, the works.

I had at least 8 latkes and I'm planning on having the remaining ones for lunch today.

I haven't felt this Jewish since I was 13.

Bump for 7 shutout innings and the game winning RBI.

Last two starts combined: 13IP 1ER 8BB 9K, WHIP of 1.077

That'll do for your 5.

I'd rather have a guy who doesn't walk 8 in 13 innings, so let's not hand him the Fifth Starter Cy Young just yet.

we call them potato pancakes because I don't know if I actually met a Jewish person before college growing up in Bugtussle, but my Grandpa used to make them every Sunday and I haven't actually had them since he passed but man were they good with sour cream.

Leviticus 18:5, "You shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments; which if a man does, he shall live in them."

The simple meaning of this text commands the Jewish people to keep Torah law "in their own lives". In other words, acts that keep you healthy supersede commandments.

I don't think his 6.9 BB/9, while nice, is sustainable for a big league starter, so mark me down for wanting more improvement there before we crown his ass. (BB/9 of 6.9 would be the highest season mark of young Tyler's career.)

I mean doesn't "c'mon now, he's trying" apply to every player we have ever complained about on this messageboard? I wouldn't boo the guy in person because he obviously cares and is trying but venting on a dark corner of the internet about a guy suffering Stage 1 Ankiel Disease should probably be allowed.

Throw fucking strikes already.

C'mon man.  I mean, I get it - it's fucking frustrating.  But there's clearly something going on here - a mechanical issue or mental issue which is precluding him from "throwing strikes already".  He's not nibbling, he's all over the fucking shop.  When he does throw strikes he's reasonably effective so you don't think the Cubs have told him to do it more?  You don't think he's trying to do it more?

That's wonderful that he's trying but this is the major leagues and they're trying to win the damn World Series. Fix him or replace him, or replace him temporarily if you need to send him down to fix him, but do it already. Letting him take the ball (and another ball, and a ball, and there's ball four) every fifth day isn't gonna work if he can't find the strike zone. Maybe Baltimore can afford to put him on the Chris Davis Rehabilitation Plan to see if he figures it out at some point over the next $38 million after a *hypothetical* Machado trade, but the Cubs can't.

TL;DR: Bullshit toleration is bad, and not good

They should probably just replace this guy with Montgomery when Darvish comes back.

Until Tyler morphs into Sleeper Cy Young like he was supposed to, I'm cool with it.

I'm not tolerating anything: "Fix him or replace him" is exactly right, and if you'd said that first time round I'd have had no problem with it at all.  But that's a long way from "Throw strikes already".

Point taken. I'm glad we agree that he sucks.

Speaking of sucking, five more walks for this turd today.  Not the direct reason they lost, but still.

Tyler Chatwalk didn't completely bury them last night. So that's something. Good job, Tyler.

His new secret formula of 6 walks/1 hit is working, for now at least.

If you throw it where they can't hit it you have a good chance of throwing a no-hitter.

I know the Cubs are great at managing players and they probably don't want to send him down unless they have to, but after tonight's performance I think it's safe to say he should be making regular starts at Iowa trying to figure this out.  He doesn't seem to have any value as a bullpen arm whatsoever.

He'd have to pass through waivers, and some shitty team would gladly claim him to try fixing him while the Cubs pay his salary.

If they claim him, don't they get his contract too?

A quick read-through on various types of waivers seems to indicate that they'd put him on revocable minor league waivers, so a team that claims him (they have 48 hours after he's posted) makes a deal with the Cubs, or the Cubs have the option of pulling him back. Chances are he's already passed through this (or he's been claimed and pulled back already) - there's usually a huge dump of guys that go through on August 1 - so if he has, then yeah...he can go to Iowa straight away...providing there's no language in his contract prohibiting that.

I'm pretty sure they'd have to DFA him in order to be able to send him to the minors.
