Check this out from Pollyellon.

QuoteSigh...

... I'm afraid you're right. The value of Kerry Wood to this franchise, however, transcends his abilities on the field. That's what they are going to miss.

They had better sign Ryan Dempster now, or the inmates are going to be running the asylum like in 2004, and it won't be pretty.

Because clearly, this will now cause chaos!

Kevin Millar to the rescue!

Ryan Dempster?  Kevin Millar?  Al, are you serious?  ...Sigh...

Bring on the broken glass dragging.

Thankfully, Pollyellon has explained why this is so awful.

QuoteMany of you think I make too much out of clubhouse chemistry, but Kerry Wood was one of the leaders of this team, someone others, not just pitchers, looked up to. Who's the face of the franchise now? Bat-breaking Carlos Zambrano? Quiet Derrek Lee? Maybe Geovany Soto could step up in a couple of years, but it seems a bit early for that. I'm very sad that Wood, who is one of my favorite players, is going to be in another uniform next year -- and the team 90 miles to the north in Milwaukee is looking for a closer and I'm guessing Doug Melvin would love nothing more than to stick it to the Cubs by offering Wood a three or four year deal.

Does he mean the "bat-breaking" Carlos Zambrano who actually showed up for the playoffs that were cancelled?  Yeah, we definitely can't have him as The Face of the Franchise.  That hothead.

SUPYAD?  I finally figured out what that meant yesterday.  I'm a dope.  DANG!

(Just by adding "DANG!" to that post, Thrill beat me to the SUPYAD Post Punch.  DANG!  FACE.  DANGFACE.)

QuoteI'm guessing Doug Melvin would love nothing more than to stick it to the Cubs by offering Wood a three or four year deal.

I never read BCB and I often complain about it when others link that shit here.  This is a fine example why.  GotDAYYYUMN, Al.  This is stupidity on the "headbutt-a-brick" level.  Yeah, the Brewers will really stick it to us there.  Their DL will rival ours.  Whatever will we do!

Meh.

I'm not nearly as upset about this as I thought I would be.

Some of y'all are little bitches.

How am I a little bitch?  I thought I was just ANGRY.

I would say that, first and foremost, calling other people out for actual attachments to players would rank as a characteristic on that list.

When you say "first and foremost" it implies a point in addition to the first one.

No matter.  I'm attached to players, sure.  But if there is sound reasoning for letting a player that I am atatched to go, then I'm not about to kick up some dirt over it.

Wood is fragile and he's asking for 3-4 years?  He's easily my favorite Cub for the past decade but there's nothing sane or reasonable about providing that kind of a deal.  Move on.

Some of y'all are little bitches.

JASON MARQUIS got a 3-year deal.

Yeah, but he hasn't been hurt ONCE during that time.  God damnit.

Which is an absolute fucking shame. Wood gets hurt climbing out of a hot tub and fuckwits like Marquis and the not-so-dearly-departed NEIFI!!! are Lou Fucking Gehrig.

To paraphrase Bill Hicks:

To paraphrase Simmer:

Bill Hicks is dead, but Dennis Leary/Dane Cook continues to make a fucking living.

I have a distinct, terrible vision that Woody goes to Milwaukee.

Or St. Louis.
Or the Mets.

Part of me is holding out hope that he wouldn't since...you know...he gets it.
I hope he goes to the Rangers, that way he'll be "home" and, outside of an occasional interleague match-up, I can just fondly root for him.

But at this point all bets are off.

The Rangers would be perfect. There aren't even Ranger fans. Have you ever met one? No. Case closed.

Two of my friends are Rangers fans.  I agree that it would be a perfect destination for Wood.  That would put me at ease.

Nope. Either you are crying your eyes out because your strikeout hero is gone, or dancing for joy because we aren't going to waste money on a shoulder injury waiting to happen.

Pick a side, Simmer. Pick a side.

I picked a side, and its right here, square smack dab in the middle of the fence.  Maybe thats why I feel...

I would be really upset if I was ever diagnosed with Neifi Perez Disease.

But, dude, just think of the Ruby!  Or was it Rubby?  Anyone remember the picture of the Perez brothers out in the bum-fucking-middle-of-nowhere with two random skank broads?  That was a funny picture.  Anyone remember enchanted puppies?  Good times for jokes.  Bad times for baseball.

In regards to Kerry Wood --

Intrepid Reader: The Stranger

Take 'er easy dude.  I know that you will.

To the guys who are being hand-wringingly disagreeable, can't we find some common ground?  We all liked Kerry Wood.  He was a good ballplayer, and a whale of a team player, with a genuinely likable personality.  He went through a lot of shit for us.  He went through a lot of shit with us.

Let's wish him well for his own future, and hope we knock 17 HRs off him if'n we have to face him at some point down the road.  Happy trails, Kerry.

Friends, let us remember the sage advice of Walter Sobchak.

What Chicago Wants on Slate.

QuoteExpect more scrutiny of Chicago's famously corrupt political machine. So far, Obama has managed to convince people he's from Chicago but not of it—a phenomenon one Chicago columnist dubbed "hopium." But just as the national media are now obsessed with Alaskan drilling, they're also likely to scrutinize city politics and speculate about potential ties to Obama. There may be only one Tony Rezko, but the media can be counted on to try to find others like him.

So far by their coverage (or rather lack) of the one and only Tony Rezko, I highly doubt the media can be counted on for anything but softballs and puff pieces where our 44th President is concerned. There will be choppy waters ahead but most of the criticism will be written off as unfounded Republican hack-jobs. Daley's old man wrote that script a generation ago and it's still playing out to bemusement of many.

QuoteSome expectations will no doubt be dashed. Federal agencies will not brim with Chicagoans. Obama will not move the capital to the Windy City, as he did his campaign. The Cubs will not win the World Series. But at the very least, Chicago will force the world to acknowledge that America is more than the sum of its coasts.

Fuck you.

It sucks. But it's probably true.

Which part?

The fucking.

True.

In the aggregate it was, although I'd say now it has turned positive.  In fact, I'd say that's what folks like Eli and ADC were arguing above - an additional dollar of disposable income will be saved and not spent on consumption.

I was lost once you guys started adding up letters.

Seriously... Those two are awful, awful spellers.

The 3 sole reasons this thread is worth clicking on:

1 -- RV's great chart, good information that most people ignore.

2 -- Tonker referencing a thread closure, which I can only hope awaits this thread.

3 -- JD talking about how these threads just instigate multi-paragraph name calling with no substance at all, but you click anyway hoping there will be some sort of e-funny to be found.

I'm all for the politi-talk, but most of what is being said here is just mind numbing.  I discuss politics every day, but it doesn't degrade to most of what I see here.  I should be the last one to talk, because I know a thing or two about making long-winded multi-paragraph posts that beat any given issue like a dead horse.

I think the advice I should follow is -- "let sleeping dogs lie".  Also, if I "can't take the heat", then I should "stay out of the kitchen".  The final and most important bit of advice I should follow is "DON'T BE A DICK!".  Sorry if I came off like a e-hating dick.

Thrill, can you rename this the "IAN vs. DJ vs. IY Triple Threat Match ClusterFuck Thread"?

It is quickly approaching "Mike D vs. PS3/Wii/X360" and "SD vs. any NFL thread" territory.  The blue "new" icon is just giving me the heebie jeebies.  I'm the dumb dick for clicking on it, I'm just a-feared the thread will take a turn for the positive, only to get boner stubbed time and time again.

Quick question -- this show worth getting back into?  I had to stop watching because of the whathaveyas, but it was starting to wear thin on me anyways.  I've been looking for a good show to eat up some free time here lately, but thought, "why not dive back in"?

I know most o'ya will say "yes", but I just want to hear if it got a lil' too melodramatic and a lil' less comedic.  I was head over heels about Jim'n'Pam at first.  Now I'm heel up ass.
