OK A-holes.  It's fixed.  Enjoy the orange links, because I have no fucking idea how to change them.  I basically learned scripting in four days to fix this damned thing. - Andy

This thread title is the most blatant case of false advertising since my successful suit against the makers of The Neverending Story.

I have similar suits in against the makers of "48 Hours", "Another 48 Hours", "11 Days 11 Nights", "9 1/2 Weeks", 'From Here to Eternity" and "About Last Night".

Should go against "127 hours" as well.  Bet you could win an arm [and a leg]

I successfully represented the June Solstice against the producers of The Longest Day.

Huey whiffs again:

I took a look at the picks and was astonished to see that Fork, Huey and I are the leaders of the survivor pool: 28 unique picks among us, and not one dead.

Only 29 days to go for the 28 to last into 2017:
Richard M. Daley, Charlie Sheen, Jason Van Dyke, Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi (alive as far as we know), Lawrence Taylor, Jared Fogle, Don Shula, Sandy Alderson, Harry Porterfield, Kim Jong Un, Mary Tyler Moore, Billy Graham, Hulk Hogan, Jimmy Carter, Valerie Harper, Amanda Bynes, Chuck Berry, Whitey Ford, Barack Obama, Ed Asner, William Devane, Rip Torn, Johnny Lujack, Bob Dole, Tippi Hedren, Joyce Randolph, and of course the already-celebrating Don Rickles and Bob Newhart:

Replying to to this thread to point out that it turns out I had, in fact, picked Rickles.

In what?

Howard Cossell.  Cossell was the epitome of the broadcaster who made the event about him.  At first I resented that.  Then, when I realized that was his schtick, I was in on the gag and thought that it was entertaining.   Howard was a gasbag, but that was his mealticket.  People loved to hate Howard, and so he cried all the way to the bank.  Whether it was his nasal voice or his toupee, he didn't care, as long as you spelled his name right.

Interesting.  Like gonzo sportscasting.

Howard was also a Social Justice Warrior long before that became construed somehow as being bad.

This conversation got me to re-thinking Cosell and I read his Wiki entry to further remind me of his life and times and it made me wonder why there hasn't been a biopic of his life and times, considering he's been dead for over 20 years.  In the right hands, it would be quite a film.

There's an HBO documenary called "Telling It Like It Is", it's on YouTube.

Or just watch Monday Night Mayhem*.

*do not actually do this.

Also, shit, when you factor in a hockey playoff field of 16 vs an MLB field of 8-10, the fact that it has produced the same number of unique champions in that time frame is also evidence it's playoffs aren't more random. If MLB had 16 teams every year there'd really be chaos.

Shit for all of the talk of the President's Cup curse the team that won that has won the Cup more often (25%) than the team that has best overall record in MLB has won the World Series (23%) since the year that started.

Every playoff game that goes to OT is sudden death. It's like having both teams batting in the bottom of the 9th.

This argument is dumb and I hate it.

Joe mixing things up again. I don't hate this:

RF Jay
3B Bryant
1B Rizzo
C Contreras
CF Almora
SS Russell
LF Schwarber
2B Baez
P Quintana

I'm not sure how good the Federalists arm is, but defensively it's not bad.
Madison? No.  Hamilton? No.  Oh, Jay.  Is that really what they call him?  Kind of obscure for non-U.S. history majors, isn't it?

Yes, but we don't care what the rest of you non-history majors think.

Lackey was pretty good his last few starts. I say give the man a few innings in Saturday

I'm definitely for giving Lackey a chance here.

And if he's terrible, I'll hold it against him forever.

What the fuck has postseason baseball done to us?

Is this the most boring thread in the history of Desipio?
No.
Although any thread in "Mom's Basement" could qualify.

This is an underrated post.

Batting Zo fifth against Scherzer and leaving out La Stella, who has hit Scherzer well in a small sample (and Scherzer has very pronounced splits anyway) is disappointing. His refusal to admit Zobrist isn't the same guy is getting to Dusty levels of veteran favoritism.
How's that October Zen working out for ya, Hoss?

I'm...not allowed to disagree with a lineup? I didn't drop any F bombs so I would consider that to be relatively tame as far as my criticism goes. I was also a touch disappointed that they lost in game 2 when I would have preferred they won. Sue me.

Don't listen to him SKO, you're doing fine.

Boobtube / The Tick
October 09, 2017, 02:37:14 PM
Somewhat surprised based on the age/nerdiness of this board that there's no entry for the new Amazon series yet.

Full disclosure: I spent many a hungover Saturday guffawing at The Tick cartoon in college. I saw very little of the 2001 live-action series and have not read the comic.

I'm liking the new series a lot. Peter Serafinowicz is damn near perfect as the Big Blue Bug of Justice and Griffin Newman does well as Arthur. The rest of the cast is also very good with an honorable mention to Alan Tudyk's voice work as a character that is basically Night Boat from The Simpsons.

Anyway, it's exactly what I want from The Tick: he's a good-hearted, bombastic, mostly oblivious indestructible tank of a hero. Just as likely to invite a homeless man he met on patrol to spend the night as he is to scold another hero for his overzealous use of deadly force. And the 4th episode, where Tick crashes Arthur's stepdad's birthday party could have come directly from the cartoon.

I would like to add one SPOILER however. The pilot for the show (shot well in advance of the rest of the series) is only okay as it's more involved with Arthur's back story and features very little of the actual Tick, to the point where it seems like one of the major themes for the show will be whether Tick is just a manifestation of Arthur's imagination. Luckily the 2nd episode dispenses with this possibility, but I do want to urge anyone turned off by the pilot to keep going, the series gets much better.

Joe's great. But not sure why he didn't go to Montgomery for Harper. He'd been warming for 6 innings.

Also Ron Darling sucks.

This isn't getting enough attention. Good Lord I cannot stand the sound of that man's voice. Somehow he was convinced in Game 2 that Wade Davis spent 2016 setting up Chapman for the Cubs.

MODS!

I'm no CT, but I feel as a former mod this is acceptable as I think it is kind of a desipio tradition to have one thread specifically for Cubs playoff games and one thread for all of the others.

Which reminds me, we are be coming up on my first anniversary as moderator. Feel free to send cake.

I feel bad Q is basically having his ERA tanked by a bunch of weak grounders that escaped the Elite Infield Defense that is Alex Avila/TLS/Mike Freeman/Ian Happ

There were several plays last night where I immediately thought "Russell/Baez/Rizzo" makes that.

I also think that when I see other team's starting infields fail to make plays and it makes me feel great.

I didn't realize Heaven on Seven was open on Saturday afternoons as well:
http://www.heavenonseven.com/wabash.html

I'm guessing it will be pretty empty.

I am intrigued.

Both are really good but depending on how much time you have the search can broaden significantly.

Too late, we already decided on this place for lunch. GIMME THE GUMBO.

Excellent choice but a heads up: they are cash only.
