My wife has probably only watched A New Hope all of the way through with me once, and so she did not remember that Luke was Red 5, so she shot me a weird look when I started chuckling as soon as they showed the original Red 5, since you knew immediately that guy was a goner.

I DVR'd all the Star Wars movies when they were on TV a couple months ago, and decided to show it to my kid who is not even 2 yet assuming he'd be bored because it wasn't animated. Well, I was wrong. He's obsessed with it. He requests it every damn day. When the Star Wars logo comes on the screen he points and screams and kicks his legs. He waves goodbye to the words on the opening crawl. And he loves R2-D2. That's how he asks for the movie. He hands me the remote and and say "Artoo...Artoo!". So we've watched A New Hope basically every day for a couple months.

When Mrs. Butthead and I left the theater after seeing Rogue One I said something about Red 5 assuming she would be as excited as I was about it because we've watched the battle of Yavin a million times recently, but I got a blank stare back. I guess I didn't marry a nerd.

Same. My son is only about 20 months old but he's already way into it. I'm sure knowing me people think I forced it on him, but no, from the moment that kid saw Darth Vader he fell in love. He walks around doing the breathing noise, playing with an R2 D2 I got him and saying BEEP BOOP, fighting with a lightsaber. I brought all of my old figures home from my folks house and he loves to play with them. We get home every day and he runs to the case and yells "SHABER" which is his way of saying I need to get the Darth Vader figure out and put his lightsaber in his hand.

When he freaks out in the car you can get him to calm down by playing the Imperial March.

It is all I could ever have hoped for as a dad.

My mom has accused me of brainwashing her grandson because he watches Star Wars so much. I'm actually getting sick of watching it, but it's easier to play it again than it is to argue with him.

We do the same thing in the car... playing the soundtrack will calm him down pretty quickly.

Has he seen all the movies? I am trying to wait to show him Empire until he's old enough to understand the surprise ending so he gets the full impact of it, but that means watching ANH over and over and over for the foreseeable future.

I'm putting the over/under on different lineups used by Joe at 120.

I'll take the over. Last year he used 130 different lineups (not counting pitcher changes) and that was with a clear-cut every day CF.

I wonder how often Heyward will end up in CF as a way to get both Javy and Zobrist in the line up.

I've finally just seen it. Some mild SPOILERS below:

I loved it. The characters were a bit thin but I'm a guy who loves the shit out of Kelly's Heroes and the only characters I can even name from that movie are the titular Kelly and Oddball.  And Don Rickles, who is playing Don Rickles.

What was I talking about? Oh yeah, Rogue One. It had what I wanted: a filthy, lived-in world. Periods of violence, punctuated by a robot or monk cracking wise.  And a third act battle that goes down as maybe the finest combat sequence this series has ever put on screen.

I could have done without a couple of the extra video game contrivances thrown in the way of the heroes transmitting the plans (since we knew it was going to happen) but I can forgive just about anything of a movie that gives me a convincingly filmed scene featuring one Star Destroyer cleaving another in twain before absolutely WRECKING a planetary shield.  If you were looking for something that gave a deeper insight into the SW universe, I can understand why you'd be disappointed.  I wasn't, and I'm not.

Pretty much all of this. The last 30 minutes or so was especially fantastic.

My only minor disappointment was that the final Vader scene had been built up by so many people that it ended up being a little underwhelming for me. Probably just a product of expectations though.

Agreed on the Vader bit. It was good but what I'd just seen blew it away.

However that goes both ways, because while Tarkin's presence in the film was built up to be anything from a disappointment to a disaster, it didn't really bother me at all.

Yeah one review I had read before the movie said Tarkin's presence was so distracting it was like a "PS4 character standing in a room of real people" so when I actually saw him I was like "Christ, it's nowhere near that bad" so it never bothered me.

I thought Tarkin looked great, but Leia seemed off to me.

The whole movie was worth it just for Red an Gold leaders.

I endorse this post.

Back in 1949 my family moved from Chicago to California.  I regretted it then.  When I saw the weather on TV today I realized once again that my parents made the right decision.  The only things that I miss about Chicago are the Cubs and the Art Institute.  (And the months of May and June.)

I'd rather suffer through each winter if it meant I didn't have to be around native Californians every day. I should really stop working for companies headquartered there.
I could write a book about the defensiveness of San Franciscans.  They rant about how superior San Francisco is to Los Angeles (and anyplace else).  But when you go to Los Angeles and ask them what they think about San Francisco they aren't even aware that there is a competition going on.  They say complimentary things and change the subject.  (True, they are aware of the Giants/Dodgers rivalry.  But that was inherited when those teams moved here from New York and  Brooklyn.)

Bay area people fucking love the bay area. When I would tell people I was moving back to Chicago after living there for a few years they seemed so confused. I would get blank stares and puzzled looks and after a long delay they would usually just say "Why?".

Half of the country voted for him. I don't care if Jake is one of them. A lot of people who mean a lot more to you than Jake Arrieta probably did, too. Not saying you can't be mad at him, or them, or this entire country, but angrily dismissing them as nothing more than idiots and bigots isn't the right response either. I thought maybe it was, but it turns out that years of just dismissing an entire swath of the country's complaints because even the valid complaints were surrounded by racism and sexism makes those people mad, and only creates more anger and it was enough to make this tragedy happen.

If Jake's a Trump supporter, fine. Throw the baseball well and I'll look past it. I'll write it off as ignorance and I hope he learns from it, like I hope they'll all learn from it. We're going to have to pick our battles for a while, folks. This isn't the one I want to have.

Yep.

If I can get through Thanksgiving with my Trump loving brother and sister-in-law, I can get through a baseball season with Jake just fine.

I do not know if I can get through a Thanksgiving with my brother and sister-in-law.

Preview sucked.  Still time to get better jokes before January.

This turned out to be a great show. I hope folks are watching it.

My only problem with it is I can't decide which of the kids is my favorite character.

Here's a crazy idea - play him in right.  Baez ranges waaaay the hell into the outfield on almost every fly ball.  With Javy basically playing short RF, Schwarber can sit back in "no doubles" mode.

Not a bad thought.  Small outfield in Wrigley anyway (keep in mind that part of the reason he got hurt was because he was in a big park and a ball that would've been long gone in Wrigley was in play for him and Dex to both reach on a full sprint), no sun field for a night game, the dude's got a good arm....not a bad thought at all, CT.

Now we'll never know if this is what you really believe or if CT used his MODS power on you.

Both Huey and CT are right.

I never considered using him in right, but I was thinking Addison could probably cover half of his territory anyway. Javy even more so. He's been practically shaking hands with the outfielders after they catch the ball.

So.... left field on Friday then?

Give him Friday off and see where we're at.  This is all, of course, dependent on how he looks and feels shagging flys today.

The weather will actually be nice and the ground should be dry, so the conditions might be optimal for it.  At the same time, I'm okay with the notion of Miller being tethered to the bullpen bench until Schwarber's only at-bat of each game, which itself would seem to give Maddon a slight tactical advantage so I'm good with either decision.

The problem with saving him for one pinch hit at bat it he will probably be facing Miller. Is one at bat against a dominant lefty reliever the best way to use him?

How awesome was The Ultimate Schwarrior last night? He's just so easy to root for.

No.

Poor Mike Olt. If he wasn't blind he would have been the Oltimate Warrior.

He came up huge in Game 3 against SF too, giving the Cubs 4 scoreless innings before running out of gas in a game where Bochy burned his bullpen, leading to their pants shitting in Game 4.

Indeed. I get why they are excited about what he can do for them as a starter next year but when that curveball is working he's such a devastating option out of the pen.

There's a simple solution... He can be the 5th starter all year, but he'll be a 5th starter that will be useful on a playoff roster out of the pen. Best of both worlds.

I got pretty choked up on Friday when Slak tweeted something about winning a pennant, and then on Saturday when I was texting my brother about the Schwarber news and we started talking about the game. I started to get a little choked up in the 8th, but the 9th seemed to happen so quickly that it kind of caught me off guard. But I lost it a little later when I saw my cousin pay tribute to my dad on facebook. And then I called my mom and a lot of trouble speaking.

After the dust settled when my dad died I remember thinking two things. 1... he won't ever meet his grand kids, and 2... he won't be here when the Cubs win. And it sucks, because his grandkids are all pretty great and so is this Cubs team.

I got a few texts from my Cardinal fan good friend about halfway through the game. He was genuinely happy for me, and asking me how I was feeling. I told him I wasn't relaxed yet, and I'd believe it when it was over, but I was lying. I was really relaxed, but couldn't admit it. It was odd. I expected to be a nervous wreck, but I wasn't. This team is different.
