Not really the greatest follower to the last couple of posts but here goes:

I just got a really great job offer, and I'm feeling like it's the right move for me to take it.  However, it means that I'll be moving from Cleveland to Raleigh without my fiancee, at least until our wedding in August and possibly later depending on a couple of things.  I'm nervous about the whole idea, so my question is two-fold.

First, any suggestions for doing the long-distance relationship thing for the next five months? Second, are there Desipiots living in Raleigh or who have passed through there with recommendations about living, eating, etc?  I don't know a whole lot about the area, and I'll take any help I can get.

Long distance relationships suck. Absolutely suck. (Not that I'm bitter or anything.) Even if it's a sweet job that will consume most of your waking hours, you better think long and hard about dealing with months of suck in the little bit of free time you have. Especially if you go to a city where you don't really know anyone - which sounds like the case.

As for wedding plans, everything she wants is perfectly fine. Oh, and while you're at it, get used to this idea. It will make married life a lot easier.

I was just in Raleigh at a conference about a month ago.  I was really impressed with the company hosting the conference and talked to them about working there.  If it ever happened, I'd move in with you.  You can even borrow my fleece.

Mrs. Tonk and I spent best part of three years apart before we got married.  I was in Munich, and she spent a year in Tokyo, then one in Helsinki, and then one in Mexico City, Chicago and the Hague.  I'm not going to lie to you, it was really, really fucking diificult - especially at first, and especially with a six- or seven-hour time difference.  If we wanted to talk, we had to stay up late or get up early to do it, and that was a killer in the long run.

For five months, though, within similar time zones, and when you're already engaged?  It really shouldn't be a problem.  Without wishing to put too fine a point on it - if the two of you can't cope with this together, you probably shouldn't be getting married.  Yes, it will be crappy at times, and you'll miss the hell out of her but it's not like you're on the other side of the World and you should be able to talk and see each other more than enough to get through what is actually quite a short time when you think about it.  If it's not forever (the separation, I mean, not the relationship), I say go for it.  You'll end up bitter about it if you don't, I suspect.

Over the course of my current marriage, there have been weeks on end where our paths rarely, if ever, crossed.

Just watch for cheap flights, rack up some miles, try to nab a day off when you can on a Friday and/or Monday, and make the most of whatever time you can cobble together.

At some point, you will both be in the same location, working the same hours. When it happens, never take it for granted.

And I second the wedding plans. Men don't remember much at all about the wedding. The women remember every little detail. It's her day, let her have whatever she wants that you can afford.
Don't read too much into any of it. It's Rozner. He's a fucking idiot.

It'll be rough so when you make the move bring lots of porn.
Your gonna need it.

Just doing my part to make sure porn becomes the subject that links all the wonderful threads on Desipio.

Okay guys, maybe one of you can help me out here: I'm looking for the Sammy Sosa / Jason Giambi Pepsi commercial from about 5-6 years back where they try to hit the farthest home run while on a mountain.  Sammy thinks he won, until a Sherpa guide finds a ball hit by Babe Ruth.

Some dialog from the commercial:

Giambi: "Best two out of three."
Sosa: "I don thin so."
Sherpa: "Who Babe Ruth?"

If anybody can find it, i'll give you ten million theoretical dollars.

I know this doesn't help, but I actually had that commercial on my old computer. Too bad I got rid of that computer just a few months ago. I could have actually been of use on this website, for once.
Desipio is a free-flowing website that occasionally touches on the immaturity, foolishness and outright stupidity of its readership.

I'm guessing that Pepsi nuked all the ads on the internet with Giambi in them considering that he lost his sponsorship deal with them after admitting to steroid use.

Has the awesome power of Desipio been usurped?

Any big bike enthusiasts?

I've got a new job working down in the loop and as the weather gets nicer I'm going to bike the commute.  But, I'm also going on Ragbrai (it's a week long bike across Iowa, 60-90 miles a day.  No I don't want to meet up RedBeard).  So I want a commuter type bike that's decent on the road/hills (but I don't give a shit about optimal speed stuff).  Everywhere I look around the internet the conversation looks like this:
New person: I want a bike in the $500 range
Douche #1: I've owned the following five bikes that cost over $2500 including my current pride and joy which cost $500 just for the custom paint job (pic included, custom paint job looks like a normal bike from sportmart).  But you should buy this other bike that's $1500.
Douch #2: Don't listen to Douche #1, you need this $2000 bike, $1500 bikes are just wasting your money.
etc etc etc

Any recommendations in the $500ish price range? (less would be awesome, but it sounds unlikely.)

Randomly internet browsing found me this as a possibility maybe?  Jamis Coda
