I can't understand why anybody would buy a new car.  You're only going to use it.

Do people buy other goods that don't get used?

I was trying to expand my don't-clean-your-car-it-will-only-get-dirty-again meme.

I think I missed that one in the memesheet.

I can't believe I even know these people. I'm ashamed of my internet life.

So which game is actually Opening Day? At Bat is listing Jake as the probable starter for Sunday, which I thought was supposed to be an exhibition game. Is it still the 5th? Can't find anything saying it's been moved up. Get your shit together, MLB.

Opening Day is the game on Monday, I have no idea why they can't get that right on their own website, but every other schedule I've looked up says the first game is that Monday.

It was. There are some Sunday night games this year, too, the Cubs just didn't get one of them. Their first regular season game is Monday at the Angels, but the website shows that they are playing a spring training game the day before that, also at the Angels, which has to be wrong or something. I can't remember a team ever playing a ST game the day before Opening Day.

There is something wrong about Opening Day being played at night.  On a Sunday?  I will have to hurry home from Church!

Offn the top of my head the first pitch of the Cubs season was hurled at night in the following years:

1986, 1988, 1999, 2000 (or more like 3 AM is it was in Japan), 2009....maybe 1 or two more.

That is to say it's occurred sporadically over the last 30 years, or for over 20% of the franchise's existence. That is also to say you should've gotten used to by it now, Stew!
Just a sloppy, undisciplined team.  Garbage.

I remember being excited in '86 because I didn't have to stay home from school to catch the Opener like I had in '84 and '85.  Ditto for '88, which was in Atlanta and was Don Zimmer's first game as manager and the game went extra innings before the Cubs closed it out against a hapless Braves team with I wanna say a Vance Law game-winning RBI....In between those 2 night games was the home opener in '87 at Wrigley that Harry was too sick to do and was replaced on the broadcast by Brent Musberger.  Yes, I stayed home from school again to watch it. It was Andre Dawson's 1st game as a Cub and he got off to a slow start; at one point he came up with the bases loaded but hit a dribbler back to the mound, but we all know he got hotter than shit in no time after that.  Also, Maine West alum Jim Lindeman started in RF for the Cardinals.  #randomfacts.

Good times.

I stand corrected.  Dawson came up--for his first at-bat as a Cub--with runners on second and third (not the bases loaded)  and nobody out and reached base on an error by second baseman Tommy Herr (not a dribbler back to the pitcher).  You'll have to take my word for it that it was a disappointing first at-bat and that the ball was hit weakly.

Well then brace yourself for some more bad news.

BB-Ref tells me Vance Law did not drive in the game-winning in the 1988 Opener.  Though I did remember correctly that the Cubs beat Atlanta in extras, the winning run actually scored when Law began the inning with double.  After a SAC bunt by Shawon Dunston, Law apparently scored the winning run--as opposed to driving it in--on a Manny Trillo SAC fly.  Though I suppose I could console myself for knowing that Law was mixed in there somewhere, I know in my heart that that's a cop-out and the shame is forever mine that I was not more exact in my recall.
