I'm visiting Austin for the first time this month. Any suggestions?

I've heard tell that Franklin's in the best BBQ - it's certainly the best known.

Only open at lunchtime though.

Speaking as someone who has ready access to lots of amazing barbecue, no barbecue is worth a three-hour wait.

This is probably true.  Get yourself down to Salt Lick off-peak, too.

Has anyone else who takes a regular prescription medicine, say, for hypertension, started receiving generics that are about a quarter the size of a pencil eraser? I'm getting the sense that binders are being eliminated from anything that's difficult to overdose on,* but I'm getting really fucking tired of trying to echolocate where they've hit the floor.

You forget I'm from the Carolinas, where your use of beef and tomato-based sauces confuses and enrages me (though not as much as people in other parts of the country using the term "barbecueing" when they clearly mean "grilling.")

Yeah in Carolina the barbeque sauce is a mixture of bourbon, laudanum, Grandpa's bitter tears when he remembers the Union Army burning his shanty to the ground, and the torn up pages of Mary Boykin Chestnut's diary.

Mostly-earnest question: Any idea why the style limits itself to just pork? Then you miss out on brisket and burnt ends (KC's best contribution to the food world).

I get burnt ends shipped from Jack Stack on a regular basis and they are in my opinion hands down the highest form of barbecue. Must be what God's balls taste like.

They are amazing. If you ever want a comparison taste test, Joe's Kansas City is my favorite in town and they just started a shipping program. You can't really go wrong with any of the best-known places in KC though, so it's splitting hairs.

I need to go eat lunch now.

The last couple of times ESKO and I went to KC we went straight to Jack Stack before we even checked into the hotel, because pretty much from the time we decide to go to KC until the time I am eating burnt ends at Jack Stack, all I think about is eating burnt ends at Jack Stack.
