That was nerve wracking.

I was and am very confused by the reaction, but it's not my sport.

I have a Bavarian friend who would strongly disagree. I'll let Tonk issue a ruling.

Munich and Bavaria are quite different things, don't forget.  Munich is, by and large, pretty cosmopolitan and as such, pretty tolerant.  There's also a very large Turkish population (and a fair number of Ghanaians, too) so people have had plenty of time to get used to foreigners with brown skin.  The rest of Bavaria is very Catholic and fairly conservative - and as such, less tolerant - but Bavaria has the best schools in a country that has the best schools in Europe, so everybody's far too educated to be rednecks.  Try the former East Germany for that - Rostock or somewhere.

Or pretty much anywhere in the Netherlands, for that matter.  For a people who are famous for being tolerant, the Dutch are incredibly fucking intolerant.

EDIT:  Also, remember that the Germans have had the shit beaten out of them for nearly seventy years on account of their last dalliance with right-wing politics and bigotry.  They're pretty fucking keen not to be like that any more.

By the way, all this talk about Bayern and Munich is moot anyway: Phil Pierson is a Yank - from Washington, D.C., apparently.
