..after the first inning, I was pretty dispassionate about the rest of the game. Resigned to yesterdays' fate, I guess.

Same here. I started making dinner with the volume off.

I went and ate too much cookie cake (Little Girl Murton is 11 today).

I cleaned. I did dishes. I couldn't sit on the couch and just watch. (happy birthday Murton girl)

My wife had a meeting, so I was solely responsible for my son. That was a nice distraction. Gave him a bath, read him a story, played with his favorite toy duck. Kept me from making no more than 7 or 8 tweets that I'll hopefully live to regret.

Jeez. How many toy ducks does he have? Nouveau riche!

A considerable amount. My wife settled on a farm animal theme for his nursery, and so people bought lots of various stuffed farm animals, and he is particular fond of ducks, I guess. I think mostly the giant rubber beak is a convenient thing for him to gnaw on.

I'm not mad. I am just very sad. God I hope these kids can come back. I had really started to let myself be talked into them being the group to do it.

They've got the core that will do it. Whether it's this year or at some point prior to 2020. But they are winning the World Series in this time frame.

I don't know why this annoys the piss out of me but it does.

Probably because I said something about talking myself into thinking this team (specifically the 2015 Cubs, who won 97 games and are currently in the national league championship series) would be the team to actually win the world series and Fork responded with the expected response about the vague, nebulous future? They're here right now and they're pissing it away and it makes me sad and while of course there should be better days in the future the mere fact that this is the first time I've watched my team in the NLCS in 12 fucking years makes it hard for me to just shrug this one off if they get swept.

They're not pissing anything away. Unless I'm reading BABIP wrong, they've been doing their thing. It's just that it seems like other than Castro's double and Schwarber's HR, everything has been hit directly at a Met.

Was that an actual play?  Why the fuck did they snap the ball?

Not only an actual play, but that's a wide receiver snapping it to a defensive back.

Did he sing the anthem tonight?

He sang it before the NLDS clincher and it was painful to listen to.

Those pipes're done, sadly.
Just a sloppy, undisciplined team.  Garbage.

I'm not mad. I am just very sad. God I hope these kids can come back. I had really started to let myself be talked into them being the group to do it.

I think the kids will all be just fine. It's going to be the players around them that make or break things -- how Lester ages, how much Arrieta regresses (because he's going to, even if he just comes back down to "awesome"), if they can keep finding good seasons out of scrap heap guys like Chris Coghlan.

I'm not ready to think about the offseason yet, but I think it's going to be a really interesting one. I doubt the front office is going to be content to just sit back and hope this same general team makes another run.

Yeah, that's the part that is always left out when people assume just steady improvement. Arrieta will probably never post a sub 2.00 ERA season again. Lester is only going to get worse. Not to say he'll be bad or even less than "very good", but he's not going to get better. I would like them to find a way to add one TOR starter through FA or trade (Price/Ross/Carrasco) and one reliable innings eater like a Mike Leake. I know Leake's peripherals and stuff don't make him look better than what Hammel or Hendricks did this year but he's proven to be a reliable, quality guy for 200+ innings a year every year and they need one of those. Hammel broke down completely in the second half and is going to be, what, 34 next year?
