I can't believe I've gotten to the point, as a Cubs fan, that this feels like a foregone conclusion, because that is stupid as all hell.

It is. What's the most sure split you could have for the outcome of a single MLB game? Maybe 60/40? 65/35, in a really extreme scenario (which this isn't, because the Cardinals are still a 100-win team)? Maybe ChuckD knows this.

Just trying to talk myself back down into the right kind of nervousness for today.

PECOTA is at 58/42 in favor of The Cubs.

I'm just confident that no matter what happens, this is probably going to be the worst Cubs team out of the next 10. So eat them alive, Jake. Or don't. You'll get several more red hot cracks at it either way!

This is just about the worst thing you could have posted.

I think, as Cub fans, we've seen enough "sure things" to realize that they rarely actually are. I'm no more confident today than I was in 2003, when the Marlins were in Chicago facing the "unbeatable duo" of Prior and Wood. That was supposed to be the year in which the remade Cubs were introduced to the league, with the promise of many more competitive years to come. The Cubs even had a supposed rejuvinated farm system.

I'm not saying that this year is like 2003, just that 2003 is perhaps the reason some of us feel uncomfortable. In particular, I think that 2003 has made us all more cynical and smarter. The future acutally looks much brighter this year. But the shadow of past seasons will always leave us doubting a bit. As they should.

No Kurt hate intended, but isn't THIS the worst thing someone could have posted?

It's clear we're never going to be ok, as Cubs fans.

As I wrote that up, I got to thinking that 2003 is basically the "Hitler" of any Cubs discussion. It gets brought up, and that pretty much kills the conversation. I accept any Kurt hate sent my way for this.

I assume it's similar to the feeling I would have if I ever started dating a supermodel.  On the one hand, yay for me.  On the other hand, the insecurity and overthinking would probably kill me on the spot.

Also, this seems about right. That's an enormous advantage for one game. But there are still a lot of outcomes in there that suck.

ANYWAYS. Go Jake. And the offense, too. Both of you. Go.

Does anyone else feel bad that we apparently shellshocked Kurt so badly that he basically preemptively apologizes every time he posts, after being in exile for years?

I feel kinda bad about it.

Kurt v2.0 probably needs a patch or an update to a new build.  He'll be fine.  Kurt release 2.1 should be available shortly.

Is "fuck you" the appropriate response? If it's not, I'm really sorry. Hmm. Not going to post this. Gotta hit the delete button. Shit.

In seriousness, it's partly that I don't want to piss everybody off, but partly that I am continuing in my Canadianization. I take the citizenship test in about a week. If they find out I've been saying things without pre-emptively apologizing, then I could automatically fail.
