WSCR, ESPNews and just about anybody else with a transmitter is reporting that Greg Maddux and the Cubs have agreed to a two year, $14.5 million contract.
As Glenn Frey said on the Hell Freezes Over tour, “We never broke up, we just took a [12] year vacation.”
In an offseason full of them, this is just another very un-Cublike move.
No matter how it turns out, Cubs fans, it’s going to be fun.
And for those of you who root for baseball teams in Missouri or Texas or anywhere else on the Senior Circuit, suck on this:
1. The Franchise
2. Wood
3. Maddux
4. Zambrano
5. Clement
6. Disco Juan Cruz
If nothing else, this deal makes it possible for Jim Hendry to have the ultimate trade deadline fodder— a starting pitcher to trade who can actually pitch.
Now if you’ll pardon me, I’m going to have a beer or 12 and dream of a very happy October.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!
Disco Juan? Looks like it’s time to hang the mirror ball in the bullpen.
Hey Houston? Piss off!
Bulls won too.
Hopefully Maddux’s return goes better than Pip’s.
We’re both 37, but my knees are in their mid 50s. Greggie! will be fine.
Go Cubs.
uh yeah, Congrats to the Cubs on signing Greg. Anyone know where I can find a good "personal" trainer? Or maybe a good lawyer?
Message to the entire National League…
It’s Fucking ON!!!
Andy,
3 years 24 million. You’re also right on with the Cubs having pitching fodder at the trade deadline. I would prefer to see Disco Juan start ’04 in Des Moines, and have him throw lights out, rather than lose value in the ‘pen. Let Wellemeyer, Meat Tray and Beltran slug it out for the long man.
So if Clement or Zabrano suffer this year, or get hurt (which I think may happen to ONE of them), Juan will be ready. Or, if everyone stays healthy, the Cubs have an 18 game lead on July 15th, and some team clinging to a spot needs a starting picther and has a stud shortstop in Double-A, then we can trade them Cruz, or trade them Clement and call Cruz up.
I wonder how often a team in contention has actually dealt major-league ready talent for hot prospetcs. Usually, it’s a team that’s out of it that unloads. Well, thanks to Gentleman Jim Hendry, we have such a surplus of pitchers that we can kicks ass AND stock up on future talent at the same time. Somebody pinch me.
Pitchers gotta stay healthy–that’s all I worry baout now. And Chip Caray has to fall to his death from the broadcast booth.
You think the Cubs would want to trade excess pitching for me?
Anybody know if the 3rd year is guaranteed? I’ve heard that it is, but I’ve also heard that certain performance levels must be met to kick in the 3rd year. I’ve also heard one radio station report that there is a club option for a 4th year!
Anyone know if Vincente Fox can grantme citizenship (Texas was once part of Mexico, you know) so I can play for the Mexican Olympic Team?
Just heard the NL Central will be a grand waste of time.
I’d go higher than that, Scottie knees are older than Albert frickairn Pooholes.
