The Richie Sexson to Arizona trade is also complete. And it’s likely the best kind of trade. The kind that hurts both teams.

Basically, the Diamondbacks traded Curt Schilling, Junior Spivey, Lyle Overbay, Craig Counsell and Chris Capuano for Sexson and Casey Fossum. The best prospect they got in the Red Sox deal, Jorge De La Rosa is now going to Milwaukee.
How does this make any sense for either team?
The Brewers traded their one legitimate power source for a bunch of filler. Counsell has no real position, Spivey’s a second baseman—and they just used their number one draft pick on a second baseman who figures to be much better than Spivey, Overbay just clogs first base with a Mark Grace like bat (without the glove) when Prince Fielder and Brad Nelson (the past two Brewer minor league players of the year) already are waiting at first.
The Diamondbacks traded for Shea Hillenbrand last year and found out the hard way that he’s an average major league hitter who will never take a walk. So is that why they traded for Sexson? Could be, but then how do you explain having to play Hillenbrand at third base, when the D’backs were so aghast at his defense there last year that they had him play first, meaning that they’d rather have a punch and judy hitter like Counsell or Matt Kata at third, while Hillenbrand played first and Overbay rotted on the bench?
Oh, and did we mention that the Diamondbacks traded away one of the best pitchers in the game?
Really, I need to get Doug Melvin and Joe Garagiola, Jr. in my fantasy league next year.

Sorry, but I can’t agree on the Sexson trade….we now finally have a star-quality first baseman for the first time ever, other than the one year Mark Grace could still play…We gave up quantity, but not quality: Counsell was awful last year, Spivey doesn’t do anything Matt Kata can’t do at a lower salary, Overbay is a prospect who flopped, and Chad Moeller didn’t play the last month-and-a-half of last season anyway. Losing Schilling hurts, sure, but the Diamondbacks are still a team to be reckoned with in the NL. I do agree with you about Hillenbrand’s defense, though. Good bat, no glove at all.
Quantity, not quality?
I knew I should have had them throw in Rod Barajas!
Damnit.
So, what is Arizona going to do when Brandon Webb has to have elbow surgery in mid-June? What is Arizona going to do when Luis Gonzalez finally remembers he’s only a contact hitter?
