Hello again, everybody. It seems like we just left—because we just did. About 16 hours ago the Cubs rode the right arm of The Franchise to a 2-1 series lead.

Then, Bobby Cox went more insane than normal and decided to skip over Horacio Ramirez to throw fat Russ Ortiz back out on the mound today and Mike Hampton if we need game five tomorrow.

    We won’t.

Glad to see Fox is using precious pregame time on the freakin’ Billy Goat curse again. Why don’t they just hand out clown noses and big red shoes to Cubs fans. I say we go down to Wrigley and light the production truck on fire.

Meanwhile, in south Florida, 64,000 fans thought the Dolphins were playing, but to their credit, they stuck around to watch the Marlins and Giants. Florida is up 7-5 going to the eighth.

Somebody out there should know this for me. Do the Cubs get home field over Florida because the Marlins are the Wild Card team? That’s the way it is in the NFL, but I have no idea if the nitwits at MLB have that rule.

Remember last night when ESPN "sideline" reporter Gary Miller said that Gary Sheffield’s left hand wasn’t broken, and that the Braves weren’t going to take him for x-rays.

First of all, if you don’t x-ray it, how do you know it’s not broken? Secondly, Gary’s not playing today. Given that the Braves season is over if they lose, I’ll take "Broken bones for $500, Alex."

    What is, Sheffield’s left hand?

  5. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:19 pm

Hey look, Mark Suppelsa and Corey McPherrin on the Fox pregame.

Corey is interviewing some dumbass who’s been hanging out on Waveland for 35 years waiting for balls to fly over the way. I’ll be he misses Mel Rojas.

  6. JL
JL on October 4, 2003 at 3:21 pm

Yes, if it’s a Cubs-Marlins NLCS then Cubs have home field.

Steve Lyons gets better duty, he’s in the bleachers with John Cusack, and sitting next to John, former Fox TV star DB Sweeney, best known for being Shoeless Joe to Cusack’s Buck Weaver in "Eight Men Out."

By the way, the last time a Chicago baseball team won a postseason series was the 1917 Sox. The Cubs lost to the Red Sox and some hump named Babe Ruth in ’18. Then the White Sox threw the ’19 series and it’s been 0-fer ever since.

So Sox fans, we’ll get your ass off the hook today.

Though, most you probably like having your ass on a hook.

Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:23 pm

Thank you JL. See, I knew one of you would know that.

In the ninth, the Giants have a run in to cut it to 7-6 and JT Snow is on first. If the Giants can get Braden Looper into the game they’ve got a shot.

Van Morrison sings the Fox broadcast to commercial. Nice.

  9. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:25 pm

Urbina hits Durham with two outs, so the tying run is at second with two outs in the ninth in Florida.

Things are getting queasy in Miami, or Ft. Lauderdale or wherever that stadium is.

  10. Steve Lyons
Steve Lyons on October 4, 2003 at 3:26 pm

I’m a moron, I just said that the Cubs aren’t trying to win because they’re starting Clement (a 14-game winner) instead of Wood on three days rest.

    Yes, I’m a complete dumbass.

Get used to it, I’ll be here all day.

  11. JL

Looking for a fine game 4?

  13. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:28 pm

Jeff Conine throws JT Snow out at home plate and the Marlins eliminate the Giants. Snow barrelled over Ivan Rodriguez, but Pudge hung on. Then Urbina tackled him.

Pudge Rodriguez is so eloquent. Nice job to the Marlins; enjoy your last five or so games this year guys.

  16. Andy

Clement’s ready. He made the rest of the team wear the stupid blue jerseys, he’s got his pants pulled up to his neck and that odd chin beard is flowing.

  19. Andy

    I’ll bite:

    Cubs 7, Braves 2

I don’t see Russ Ortiz pitching well today. It’s cold, he’s fat and he’s tired.

  20. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:34 pm

The first pitch is brought to you by Budweiser and it’s a strike.

Home plate umpire Larry Young’s strikezone is predictibly shaky. Clement throws all four in the same spot. He gets three of them called, though.

Furcal is out. Here comes Giles, the only Brave getting any hits. Well, he and DeRosa.

  21. Dennis
Dennis on October 4, 2003 at 3:35 pm

Fat and tired is no way pitch in the big leagues young man.

  22. Mattus

Did you guys all see that lame "who has the best uniform in sports" poll espn has going?

Cubs are up against the Reds in the first round.

  23. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:37 pm

Giles went on the DL this year with a bruised spine. Ouch.

He got it in that collision with Mark Prior. Everytime I see the replay on that, I can’t figure out how Prior ran into him. How did he not see him?

    Oh, well.

Giles grounds to Gonzalez. Our shortstop’s a little steadier than their’s is.

  24. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:38 pm

Larry Wayne trots out his .091 series batting average to the plate.

Larry Wayne flies helplessly to Lofton in center.

One, two , three and the Cubs are coming up. Get ’em early and often today, guys.

Braves 0, Cubs coming to bat.

  25. raj
raj on October 4, 2003 at 3:38 pm

Clement’s got a bit of a molester mustache going doesn’t he? Never noticed that before.

  26. Walt

so how many pitches did Fat Russ throw in Game 1? (yeah I know I could look it up)

  27. Jeannie Zelasky
Jeannie Zelasky on October 4, 2003 at 3:40 pm

We’ve got 47 minutes of commercial free music coming up for you, including hits from Jethro Tull, Foghat and of course, Boston. Nobody can ever get enough Boston.

But first, speaking of Boston, here’s Loggins and Messina with "Please Come to Boston."

  28. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:41 pm

Kenny Lofton’s leadoff grounder to short is brought to you by Subway. One out. That’s one for Furcal. Remember, he boots every third one.

  29. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:42 pm

Karry Ling has an injury update on Gary Sheffield. This should be good.

  30. Karry Ling
Karry Ling on October 4, 2003 at 3:43 pm

X-rays on Sheffield’s right wrist were negative.

That’s because he got hit on the left one.

Those, were negative, too, but it’s not all good news for Gary. He didn’t wear the protective lead apron for the x-ray and now, he’s sterile.

    Back to you, Andy.

  31. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:43 pm

Gruddy walks on eight pitches. Fat Russ just asked for an IV.

  32. Mattus
Mattus on October 4, 2003 at 3:44 pm

    …I’m laughing already.

    Cubs need runs early.

  33. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:45 pm

Fox with a clever Donde Esta Sosa? graphic.

tHom says that the Sosa-Bell trade was one of the lopsided in baseball history. I think he forgets the Cubs got Kenny Patterson, too. He was the real key to that trade.

Sammy flies to deep center. Two out.

  34. Stat Guy
Stat Guy on October 4, 2003 at 3:46 pm

The Cubs have 10 runs this series to date, and 40% of them have been in the first inning.

And another 20% in the 8th.

  35. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:47 pm

Alou singles to Furcal. Man, that little bastard covers a lot of ground. He ran it down in short left and had no play. Two on. Two out.

    Here’s E-ramis.

  36. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:48 pm

    Nice work, Stat Guy.

I’ve got one for you. The Cubs have outscored the Braves three to one this postseason at Wrigley.

I didn’t have to look it up.

I just hope to ammend it soon.

  37. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:50 pm

Steve Lyons says Dusty "loves" E-ramis. Not in a Jim Edmonds-Edgar Renteria kind of way, though.

    tHom likes the word tardy.

As David Lee Roth once sang, "I don’t feel tardy."

Actually, he didn’t sing it, he said it in the "Hot for Teacher" video.

E-ramis pops to the 174 year old Julio Franco in foul territory.

No runs, but fat Russ threw a lot of pitches again.

    After one, we’re scoreless.

  38. Mattus
Mattus on October 4, 2003 at 3:50 pm

Alou should try and steal to 3rd, as 2nd isn’t available.

  39. Jeannie Zelasky
Jeannie Zelasky on October 4, 2003 at 3:51 pm

Two words come to mind when I think of David Lee Roth and the 1987 DJ’s convention at Lake Tahoe.

    Rim

    job.

  40. Dennis
Dennis on October 4, 2003 at 3:51 pm

The Cubs just missed launching three balls (one by Sosa and two by Aramis). Ortiz’s fastball is already splitting the plate, something that did not happen until late in game 1. I am predicting an explosion soon.

  41. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:52 pm

Uh…thanks? Jeannie? I have no idea.

Karry Ling has some info on the weather today at Wrigley.

  42. Jeannie Zelasky
Jeannie Zelasky on October 4, 2003 at 3:52 pm

  43. Karry Ling
Karry Ling on October 4, 2003 at 3:53 pm

I’m outside right now and it’s sunny and pretty warm. There’s a refreshing breeze and the birds are plentiful.

But then, I’m not in Chicago.

    Back to you, Andy.

  44. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:56 pm

Javy singles to center and Lyons says that’s what Braves hitting coach Terry Pendleton has been emphasizing for two years.

What’s that, Steve? Hitting the ball? Novel concept for a HITTING coach, I know.

Steve says Dusty is disappointed that Sheffield’s hurt. Yeah, isn’t he like 1-14? I’m sad, too.

Lyons likes it when fans bring their gloves to the park. If you’re old enough to drive, you’re too old to bring your glove to the park.

  45. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:56 pm

Clement strikes out Druw on a nasty slider. One away. Javy’s at first, looking like he needs a nap.

  46. Phil
Phil on October 4, 2003 at 3:57 pm

I guess if our fans field better than the braves fans, we’ll win? Well, I’ll bet our fans will be outdrinking their’s tonight!

  47. Walt
Walt on October 4, 2003 at 3:57 pm

where can I buy one of those Matt Clement/Abe Lincoln fake goatees? Not that I’d wear one, but I’m thinking my grandson would look cool with it…

  48. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 3:58 pm

I never get tired of the horrible Fox shill for Sprint PCS phones.

It’s bad when Steve Lyons knows what pitch won’t get a guy out. He says that Clement shouldn’t throw a slider away to Franco because Julio wants to take everything to right.

Clement throws an outside slider. Franco singles to left.

    The Mullet is up.

  49. Larry Rothschild
Larry Rothschild on October 4, 2003 at 3:59 pm

Clement always has problems when he falls in love with throwing the ball sidearm. When he throws over the top, he’s as good as anyone.

  50. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 4:00 pm

Errr…in my last post, Franco singled to right. I’m a dope.

The Mullet pops in foul ground to Sammy, and say what you want about Senor Sosa, but he does a great job dealing with the weird bullpens and big brown wall in right field.

    Two out.

  51. raj
raj on October 4, 2003 at 4:00 pm

Sensing some sort of weird tension between Brennaman and Lyons today.

Clement’s looking a little shaky, not too bad though.

  52. Larry Rothschild
Larry Rothschild on October 4, 2003 at 4:01 pm

oh shit. Was Clement limping after the play at 1st? More groin problems?

  53. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 4:01 pm

Darren Bragg grounds out to Karros to end the threat. I’m not saying that Darren Bragg is slow, but Karros had time to knock the ball down, pick it up, get out his videocamera and film himself running to first to tag the bag.

After one and a half, we’re scoreless.

  54. Karry Ling
Karry Ling on October 4, 2003 at 4:02 pm

Karry Ling here with a report on Matt Clement’s groin.

    It feels great!

But he did complain that my hands are cold.

    Back to you, Andy.

  56. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 4:05 pm

Clement is showing signs of a bad groin, but he did that all day last Saturday, too. In fact, I still remember him pathetically leaning over to pick up the rosin bag before the game started. So who knows?

Karros singles to right. How tall is Darren Bragg, 5’1?

  57. Phil
Phil on October 4, 2003 at 4:07 pm

No, the 5.1 figure is Karros’ time to first…

  58. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 4:08 pm

Is it just me or is Ortiz throwing a lot of fastballs right down the middle? The Cubs have yet to actually swing at one.

Gonzalez is called out on a check swing. That pathetic strikeout brought to you by Chevy Silverado.

Here’s Bako. Whoo, what a murderer’s row we’ve got at the bottom of this order.

  59. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 4:10 pm

Remember a couple years ago when Bobby Cox would pick his nose whenever he thought the camera was on him? Yeah, me too.

Bako grounds to second, but hits it so anemically that no play can be made at second. So it’s a fairly productive out. Karros to second. Two out.

Matt Clement and his disconnected groin are up.

  60. Andy

Clement’s hacks at the plate show no signs of a problem.

He only takes three though and he’s gone.

  62. Phil
Phil on October 4, 2003 at 4:12 pm

  65. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 4:17 pm

Michael Jordan is at the game.

Meanwhile, Clement is self destructing. He throws a wild pitch and Ortiz is at second.

    Clement then walks Furcal.

tHom is getting all over the Cubs for not having somebody warming up, but Clement does not look injured.

    Here’s Larry Wayne.

  70. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 4:22 pm

Javy’s up with two on and two out.

    Javy pops up to Karros.

Looked like Clement hung a slider.

    Oh, well. It worked.

Due up in the Cubs third, Lofton, Gruddy and Sosa.

Nahh..there are plenty of good seats available for today’s game.

    No, wait…it’s packed.

tHom is telling the story about how Julio Franco invited Gee Dub Bush to his wedding and the whole Gee Dub clan came, even the daughters. But is that a surprise? Barbara and Jenna will go anywhere there’s an open bar.

Julio just told Larry Young he hopes he enjoys his next audit.

    Clement walks him.

The Mullet singles to center and the speedy Franco goes first to third.

Runners at the corners..one out. For Darren Bragg.

  93. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 4:50 pm

Bragg breaks his bat, Gonzalez throws out the Mullet at second, but no double play. Franco scores and we’re tied.

Guthrie’s got some good stuff today. The only player he retired was on a diving catch by Sammy.

    Javy doubles.

Regular Joe has sat down because this one’s over.

    Juan Cruz is warming up.

When Juan is a better option than the guy on the mound…that’s bad.

    LR-Bullpen? Is the franchise ready?

BP-Every day Joe is the franchise?

LR-G Dammit. What about Wellemeyer or whatever his name is? Is he around?

BP-Why the hell did you leave Clement in so long?

LR-Why the hell did YOU get up Guthrie. Screw it.

  218. Andy

Druw grounds out and the 40,000 Cubs fans let Guthrie know what they think of his performance.

    Braves 6, Cubs 2.

We’ll be back to do this again tomorrow night at 7 p.m.

    Yikes.

Will Cunnane is finally in, but Alou pops out on the first pitch.

Chris Myers says Farns "jammed" his right knee.

Better his knee than his arm, but either way, for the short term, it sucks.

  221. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 6:46 pm

Cunnane whiff E-ramis. Suddenly, it’s the Cubs who look dead.

Karros jacks another solo homer. It’s 6-3.

The Mark Guthrie thing is making me nauseous right now.

  227. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 6:52 pm

Juan Cruz is in to pitch, Randall Simon in at first.

Lyons just compared Cruz to Oil Can Boyd. Not a good thing.

  228. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 6:55 pm

Cruz fans Franco. Sure, now he’s got good stuff.

  230. Andy

Not so fast. Juan’s behind the Mullet 3-0.

    Nope. 4-0.

    That’s more like it.

  231. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 6:59 pm

Juan then strikes out Bragg. What is this, every other guy?

  232. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 7:00 pm

Juan gets out of it with a flyball to Moises.

Hey, all we need are three runs off of John Smoltz?

    No problem.

    Braves 6, Cubs 3.

  233. Andy

    It’s up to Sammy.

  238. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 7:15 pm

Sammy flies deep to center and it’s over.

John Smoltz’s elbow fell off sometime during that at bat.

And he still got the last out.

    Woof.

Well, you didn’t think it’d be easy did you?

    Cubs-Braves, game five, tommorrow night.

    Want something to smile about.

    We have Kerry Wood.

    And they don’t.

  239. Larry Jones

    A tough loss, Cubs.

It’s up to you to ensure it’s not a regretful loss. Good luck.

  241. Andy
Andy on October 4, 2003 at 7:18 pm

When you boil it all down, the biggest thing that killed the Cubs was the injury to The Farns. Guthrie got rocked and took the lead from two to four.

Let’s hope the rally the last two innings wakes up the bats.

Kerry will be filthy tomorrow, but they need to jump on Hampton when he gives them the chance.

    See you then.

What in the world is Dusty doing? Doug Glanville AND Mark Guthrie made appearances in a PLAYOFF game. A PLAYOFF GAME. Read that again: A PLAYOFF GAME.

Dusty keeps on snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Hopefully the Cubs’ starting pitching senior member Kerry Wood is good enough to overcome his managing (Sarcasm Alert) GENIUS tomorrow night…
