I couldn't believe Ned brought in McLung to hit Pujols.  He had McLung and Turdthrow both warming up at the same time.  You knew what he was going to do.  Somebody on baseball primer pointed out that as bad as Turdthrow has been he's tragically terrible when entering a game with runners on (something like 6.23 ERA for the entire season...even with his "good" start to the season included).  So you guarantee that Pujols will be on first when that mouthbreathin' dope comes in.  Ned might as well have pulled the stock on the floodgates on his way to the clubhouse after that move.

Now it's down to this.  If the Cubs lose the rest of their games they'll probably have to play a one-gamer at Wrigley.  If they win one, they'll win the division.

Not exactly the most graceful way to win it, but who gives a shit?

The Brewers recap says that in Turdthrow's August/September outings, he's allowed 12 of 14 inherited runners to score.  Wow.

And yet Yost keeps marching him out there.  This must have been what it was like for Astros when Baker was managing the team in 2004.

Hey not even the Farns was that bad.

I really can understand the enmity Wisconsinites have for Chicago.

Let's start with the big, bad Bears. After all, if it weren't for that terrible George Halas, the Green Bay Packers would have probably relocated to Milwaukee or Minneapolis in the 30s or 40s. ANd then they'd probably be in San Antonio or Los Angeles.

Let's continue with Bill Veeck, who owned the minor league Brewers in the 40s and 50s and attempted to move the St. Louis Browns up to Milwaukee. Those awful Chicago people. Screw the FIBs!

Then John Allyn, the Sox owner, was interested in uprooting the Meth Sox and taking them to Milwaukee. He even played a dozen home games a year in County Stadium in 1968 and 1969 to generate fan support. The fans demonstrated their support, and it made it a hell of a lot easier for our dear commissioner to move the Seattle Pilots there in 1970.

Did you know that Chicago is by far the No. 1 market for Miller products? Did you also know that Chicago is one of the top customers of Harley Davidson bikes?

What else is a top industry in Wisconsin?

Accounting for nearly $13 billion in travel expenditures per year,  Wisconsin's tourism industry is one of the state's top three industries along with manufacturing and agriculture.

Now from where do all these tourists come? At least 25% come from Illinois. So assholes like you and me give Wisconsin about $3.25 billion. That's enough to buy and sell the Cubs almost 4 times.

So, yeah, I can see where all this enmity is coming from.

Once again, I'm shocked to learn that Wrigley is the only place where people wear tank tops, own cell phones and drink beer. What a terrible place. Boo!

I spent many summer nights in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996 in the bleachers at County Stadium (bleacher ticket price: $4), and amazing as it sounds, people who went there (not that many, as you could imagine) seemed more enamored with the selection of beers and sausages in the concession stand and the fights that would continually break out in the stands.

Get the DirectTV Choice Package, wait a week after they install it (you might have it installed within the next 48 hrs. if you're lucky), and DirecTV will try to follow up with you. They'll offer you the Premier Package + NFL Sunday ticket for $54.99. The only catch is you'll have to downgrade back to DirecTV Choice (which offers you most channels) once NFL season's over, or they'll increase your price to $99.99 or something like that.

I positive DirecTV.

I'm down, but I'm not going to see some goddamn Wolves game.

I'd like to go back in time to 1995 1994 and go to a Hawks/Leafs game.  Make it happen.

Is that from their final game in the Stadium?

It is.

Any good strip clubs in the vicinity of Allstate Arena?

Heavenly Bodies is about 3 miles straight down Touhy from the Allstate Arena.

Haven't been there for about 6-7 years, though, so I can't speak for it's quality.

there's the Krispy Kreme on Mannheim, so we can stop in and say hello to Hendry.

It's the one closest to Hendry's home, so maybe he'll be there injesting a dozen.

Back to the cable versus satelite discussion.  I got a letter last night from my satellite company telling me that they are adding 75 new HD channels in September and will have 100 in 2008.  Interesting side note.  I spelled "satellite" two different ways, but spell check likes them both.

I'll be taking the plunge into DirecTV shortly.

As it stands, the Phillies are phour runs down in the second inning against Milwaukee.  Assuming phor a moment that they don't turn that result around, I'd like to thank the phine city of Philadelphia, the Phillies and their phans, phor putting up such a good phight in Chicago, only to then roll over and have their tummies tickled against the Brewers.

Phuck you.  May you lose another 10,000 games bephore your next victory.

Tonker, let me tell you a secret about U.S. history.

There's a reason we moved our capital first to New York, then to a swamp in Maryland and Virginia. George Washington hated cheesesteaks, the Phanatic, the Liberty Bell, Rocky, Mike Schmidt, Ron Jaworski, and Julius Erving. He did like Harry Kalas, but Alexander Hamilton reminded him that you can pull in the Philadelphia radio station from NYC. George and John Adams and Thomas Jefferson so hated Philly, they invented Washington DC, knowing that the Caps, the Bullets (or Wiz) and of course the Redskins would make Philly miserable. I don't think they counted on Villanova-Georgetown, but out founding fathers were very prescient.

Phuck you Philadelphia. Cubs do it themselves.

Here, BC, look at this. It should cheer you up.

This is Chuck Dickens' handiwork following the tragic death of Josh Hancock, which has allowed us to "put things in perspective," not to mention feed a number of hungry lawyers:

Let's say that...

This week:

Cubs go 2-5
Brewers go 2-4
Cardinals go 4-2

Standings would be:

MIL 59-53 --
CHC 57-53 1 GB
STL 53-55 4 GB

Next week:

Cubs go 2-5
Brewers go 1-5
Cardinals go 5-2

MIL 60-58 --
CHC 59-58 .5 GB
STL 58-57 .5 GB

Week after (Remember that STL plays both MIL and CHC):

Say the Cardinals sweep the Brewers at MIL while the Cubs can only win 1 of 3 from the Reds, then the Cardinals go to CHC and win 2 of 3 while the Brewers can win 2 of 3 from the Reds...

Cubs go 2-4
Brewers go 2-4
Cardinals go 5-1

STL 63-58 --
MIL 62-62 2.5 GB
CHC 61-62 3 GB

-----

That scenario is realistic, and doesn't even take into account worst-case scenarios that could see the Brewers and Cubs even farther behind than the 2.5 and 3 games back they are in this scenario.

Yes, yes, and the events of this past week saw the following:

Brewers go 2-5; Cubs go 4-2; Cards go 4-3. The Cardinals were at home where you should expect a little boost.  So they pulled a couple games out of their ass. Give me a few minutes and I could point you to some awesome wins by the 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and even the 2006 Cubs. At no point did those dramatic wins (some of them over fading first-place clubs) ignite these teams to a division title.

Enjoy the sunshine.

I'm not going BC on anybody but I'm not going to think about final standings until late September. Right now, I'm enjoying today, because today is a beautiful thing. I'm not worried about the Cardinals, the Brewers, the D-Bags or anybody.

Theodore Roosevelt Lilly, Ogdens. Just win tonight, baby...

I'll drink a giblet of Hendry 2002 to that. Apex, when do you make your grand entrance into Cook County?

If the Cubs are on the verge of clinching the division in early September, I'm sure we might lose the emcee of a charity golf outing that I'm involved with.

If they're on the verge in early September, that means they're 20 games up.

August is a long month.. Should the Cubs go 22-6, the Brewers 6-22, the Cardinals 14-14, the standings would be something like this come the first of September:

                      GB
Cubs                --
Cardinals          15
Brewers          17 1/2

Of course, BC will moan about how this will give the Cubs nothing to play for in September, ensuring an early exit against the Wild Card Dodgers or D-backs.

Me, I'm going the LaRussa route and pouring myself definitely a few glasses of red wine to savor. Anyone for 2007 Vintage Hendry?

I'd decant it, sure - but it's still not mature enough to drink.

The 2002 vintage (pictured above) is not very tasty. It's fermented sweat of Farns and Hundley. However, you're wasted in no time.
