George Plimpton, a man with a great sense of irony and humor passed away today. If you’ve never seen the NFL Films special where they followed him around Baltimore Colts’ training camp as he plotted his second attempt at playing in an NFL game, you’ve missed out.
He’s best remembered for the book, “Paper Lion” about his tryout with the Lions, and of course for this piece in the April 1, 1985 issue of Sports Illustrated. Check out the first letter of every word in the subheading.

George also uttered one of the greatest lines in recent Simpson’s history:
GP: Hi, I’m George Plimpton, many of you may know me from my many literary works, and I also played the evil dean in "School of Hard Knockers."
Homer: How could you expel Boogerman?!?
GP: He replaced my tennis racket with a rubber phallus!
