I can't believe that there aren't at least 10 middle infielders in the farm system who would be better at the shortstop position than Aaron Miles.  Hell, I bet that the guy who replaced Yosh in the clubhouse would be better than Miles.  I bet the brother of the girl who dates the nephew of the guy who replaced Yosh would be better.

I like Miles because he makes me feel like even I could make it onto a big league roster.
It's funny how he went from a 99 OPS+ when he was with St. Louis to 23 this year.  It's almost as if there was something about playing for Tony LaRussa that enhances your abilities.

Holy shit, 23? I didn't know it could go that low. For some perspective, their worst years with the Cubs:

Neifi put up a 53 in 2006
RonCe put up a 55 in 2006
Macias put up a 52 in 2005

Miles is more than twice as bad as those ingrown chodehairs. Sweet sassy molassey.

Up until recently, Yuniesky Betancourt had put up a -11 OPS+ during his time with the Royals.

Wouldn't the scale be logarithmic?  23 isn't twice as worse as 46.  It's like 5 or 6 times worse because of the curve of the scale, no?

Ruining?  Was was trying to make you feel even better by saying that Miles is worse than you thought.  By multiples!

The Mendoza Line:

The term is named for former shortstop Mario Mendoza, a flashy defensive player but a poor hitter who struggled at the plate. Although Mendoza's batting average was .215 lifetime,[1] he was known as a sub-.200 hitter whose average frequently fell into the .170 to .180 range during any particular year. That proved to be true in 1979 when Mendoza managed to finish the year with a meager .198 average. Baseball legend George Brett is believed to have coined the term early in that season when asked about his own batting average.[2] Brett is said to have remarked "The first thing I look for in the Sunday papers is who is below the Mendoza line".[3] Bruce Bochy and Tom Paciorek have also been credited as creators of the expression.[4]

Baseball-reference.com has this fucker's OPS+ for the season at 20.

The next guy up on the OPS+ list that has had more than 125 at-bats this season is Alex Gonzalez from the Reds, with a beautiful OPS+ of 43.

My goodness, Aaron Miles FUCKING SUCKS...

I couldn't think of anywhere else to put this, so I went with a thread where even a guy batting .207/.287/.266 could look like an All-Star compared to Miles.  Did anyone see Alexi Casilla's ridiculous play last night?

I can't let this go because it's just simply so hard to believe one shitty player can make this much of a difference. But at this point it can't be called a coincidence.

Thru yesterday's game:

2009 Cubs in games Aaron Miles played: 24-38 (.387)

2009 Cubs in games Aaron Miles did not play: 43-27 (.614)

I'd still say it's pretty coincidental, but it's hilarious.

2009 Cubs in games Aaron Miles did not play: 43-27 (.614)

According to FanGraphs' Win Values, Miles' overall production has been worth 13.6 fewer runs than a replacement player in 2009, making him worth negative 6.1 million dollars to the Cubs with a month yet to play.

Only 6 players have been worth less to this point this season: Yuniesky Betancourt (-$8.8mm), Gary Matthews Jr. (-$8.6mm), Jose Guillen* (-$8.4mm), Brian Giles (-$7.3mm), Delmon Young (-$6.4mm) and Josh Geer (-$6.4mm).

This brings Miles' overall career value to a grand total of $1.2 million in 6+ MLB seasons.

*That's "ASor with a glove" for the Internet Chuck aficionados out there. ASor without a glove has been worth -$2.7mm.
WHAT THESE FANCY DANS IN CHICAGO THINK THEY DO?
